No night for Harden, the Bulls recover from -11 in the second half, Ball’s triple in the final is the seal of the game: it ends 111-107

Another defeat against a top team, a film already seen for Brooklyn fans. Chicago too, therefore, moves to Barclays Center and slows the path of a club that in this league is 10-0 against opponents with a negative record but only 6-7 against teams with more wins than losses this season. The Bulls play the important possessions of the fourth period better, recover a deficit of 11 points in the second half and in the end they win with merit 111-107. LaVine and DeRozan make themselves heard in attack, Ball signs the most important triple of the match and Chicago thus wins his second success in as many races with the Nets in this beginning of the championship. Coach Nash, on the other hand, can complain about the too many iron mistakes of a decidedly subdued Harden.

The match

Brooklyn starts very well, signs the first nine points of the race and tries to immediately put pressure on the host defense. Aldridge and Durant find good solutions and the visiting team plays very well in the first quarter, also receiving the production of Millsap from the bench. DeRozan however ignites the Bulls attack early in the second period, Brooklyn begins to make some confusion in attack and Chicago takes the Nets back. KD’s plays in the end of the first half, however, give the New York team +4 at half-time. After a good first half Brooklyn tries to take over the reins of the match at the opening of the second half. Mills and Durant push the Nets to +11.

The comeback

In the moment of greatest difficulty, the guests rely on LaVine who responds with a series of baskets of exquisite workmanship. On the other hand, however, Harden just can’t get back on track (in the end he will close with a bad 5/21 from the field). Chicago completes the comeback by placing a 13-4 run at the start of the final fraction then starts playing his best basketball thus remaining in front until the final seconds. Durant’s triple at 39 ” from the siren calls the result into question by bringing the Nets back to -3 but Chicago does not break up and finds with Ball the blow of the long-range knockout at 16 ” from the end of the match. Game, match and meeting, then for the team of coach Donovan who shows character and personality going to win with full merit on the difficult parquet of the Barclays Center. “A good performance – emphasizes the Bulls coach – but let’s not get our heads together. We must certainly not think that we have become phenomena for how we interpreted a game in December. We still have great room for improvement ”. Disappointment, however, in the Nets house with Harden who is not afraid of self-criticism. “I take responsibility for this defeat – says the Nets player – I made too many mistakes in penetration and failed a series of layups that in the end made a difference”.

Brooklyn:Durant 28 (10/20, 2/6, 2/2 tl), Aldridge 20, Harden 14. Rimbalzi: Brown 12. Assist: Harden 14.

Chicago: LaVine 31 (7/11, 2/9, 11/13 tl), DeRozan 29, Dosunmu, Vucevic 11. Rimbalzi: Ball 9. Assist: Ball 7.

The blue couple on the podium with Szabo equaling the world record in the 50 butterfly. Ex aequo with Russia for the mixed 4×50 sl. Fourth place in the 200 sl, 100 butterfly and 200 mixed for the blues. All the blue frogs in the final

After three fourth places the blue joys arrive at the short course European Championships in Kazan. Thanks to Matteo Rivolta, who takes silver in the 50 butterfly and takes back the Italian record in 22 ”14 by 5 cents on Thomas Ceccon, who is bronze (the double Olympic medalist yesterday was silver in the 200 mixed medals). In a race dominated by the Hungarian Szebasztian Szabo, equaled the world record of the Brazilian Nicholas Santos in 21 ”75. For the Dolphinist from Arconate, who also took the record, “it was not an impeccable race: the tack was not perfect and I took a long time to finish. To think that when I was young I just couldn’t make it, I was still. Instead now I find myself vice European champion and Italian record holder: how strange life is. I dedicate this medal to my family with all my heart, because I am lucky to have people by my side who support me, especially when there are changes, this year I have changed many things in my life and the results are paying me back in full. At my age I am very proud to compete with these guys and always fight ”. Ceccon admits: “I am delighted to share the podium with Matteo. I did something wrong too, but the 50 is a crazy race and the details make the difference. It is my second individual medal and now I have to look forward to grow, mature and win further “.

The men-women freestyle relay is 0 silver ex aequo with Morozov’s Russia: the quartet in 1’29 “40 asks behind the Netherlands from 1’28” 93 with these fractions: Alessandro Miressi 21 “33, Lorenzo Zazzeri 20 ”59, Silvia Di Pietro 23” 48, Costanza Cocconcelli 24 ”00. Three medals before tomorrow’s grand finale for a loot updated to 24 with 4 golds, 13 silvers and 7 bronzes. Federnuoto announces that this relay race is Italy’s 1000th medal in the European Championships. Miressi says: “It wasn’t an easy medal to take, because all four of us had individual races. We have gone beyond tiredness ”. Di Pietro adds: “We put our hearts beyond the obstacle, as they say. Fast relays are always difficult and dangerous: we didn’t do anything wrong ”. Cocconcelli continues: “After many races this satisfaction has finally arrived. The last few meters were very hard. I’m happy to have kept the team on the podium ”. Zazzart concludes: “Congratulations to Costanza who managed to keep pace with Russia. It was by no means easy. As Alessandro also said, after having competed so much and even at close range, he may lack clarity. We were perfect ”.

Wooden medals

Fourth place full of regrets for Matteo Ciampi, who remains under the podium by 3 tenths to the advantage of the Dutch Stan Pijenenburg (1’42 ”51), in the lead up to 175 meters. The blue, trained in Livorno by Stefano Franceschi, for the first time drops below 1’43 “and consolidates the fifth Italian time trial ever (he had 1’43” 28), while Marco de Tullio is eighth in 1’44 “04 and the staff of the semifinal worsened by 1’43 ”62. The triumph is for the Romanian David Popovici in 1’42 “12: for the 2004 junior champion comes the consecration among the greats with a final of 25” 62 with which the Dutch couple burns (silver to Luc Kroon in 1’42 “20 ).

Di Liddo fourth

Elena Di Liddo, an Apulian dolphinist, is also fourth in the 100 butterfly won by the Swedish Sarah Sjostrom in 55 ”84. The bronze escapes by 26 cents the blue who swims in 56 “61 (26” 34 halfway through the race): with the staff of 56 “06 it would have been silver. This time second ex aequo in 56” 35 are the Greek Anna Ntountounaki and the Belarusian Anasataiya Shkurdai. Eighth is the former world champion Ilaria Bianchi in 57 “98 .. Eighth is the former world champion Ilaria Bianchi in 57” 98. In the 100 backstroke, which are her second race, Margherita Panziera is eighth in 57 “53, thirty cents worse of the semifinal: not even with her record of 56 “57 would she have reached the podium today. Dutch double with Kira Toussaint who in 55” 76 mocked 10 hundredths Maaike De Waard, bronze in 2001 French style Analia Pigree, in 56 “40. one cent, the Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich denies the gold to the Dutch Arno Kamming: 2’01 “73. Another fourth place for Costanza Cocconcelli in the 200 medley: the Bolognese improves from 2’08” 94 to 2’08 “59 but remains under the podium composed by the Australian Gorbenko d’oro in 2’05 “17 on Ugolkova (Svi) 2’06” 41 and Gunes (Tur) 2’07 “67. Too bad for Sara Franceschi’s absence due to indisposition .

The other races

First Benedetta Pilato (29 “67) and Arianna Castiglioni (29” 76) qualify for the finals of the 50 breaststroke, and then with the Italian record (canceled 25 “62 of Scozzoli in 2017) Nicolò Martinenghi (25” 37, also championship record) and Fabio Scozzoli himself (25 ”87). And in the 100 sl Alessandro Miressi stamps the Italian primacy in the queen race: 100 sl in 45 “87, for 3 cents less than the time of Glagow 2019 and as many 3 cents but more than the Russian Kolesnikov in the semifinal. On the blue day of records, Silvia Di Pietro also exceeds in the 50 butterfly behind the 24 “92 Sjostrom (Sve): the Roman swims in 25” 03 (prev. 25 “18 of 24 April in Rome), third De Waard ( Ola) 25 “11, seventh Di Liddo 25” 51. Another Italian record also falls in the 200 backstroke, signed by Lorenzo Mora, who fell in the semifinal to 1’50 ”15 (previously 1’50” 45 on 8 November 109 in Genoa). Michel Lamberti also enters the final with the fifth time in 1’52 ”01.

National titles awarded in Turin with four confirmations: Grassl, Gutmann, Della Monica-Guarise in couples and Marco-Charlene in dance win

Four titles, as many confirmations: the Italian figure skating championships, at the Palavela in Turin, reaffirm the winners of the edition of a year ago at the Wurth Arena in Egna. And the result, two months from the Beijing Olympics, also passing through the European Championships in Tallinn (12-15 January), can be interpreted positively and negatively. Because in some specialties the level is at the top international level, in others less so.

Men

The most competitive sector remains the male one, with two athletes who, in the continental review, may also aspire to get on the podium together. The challenge between Daniel Grassl and Matteo Rizzo – on very high standards – is always incandescent and tight, although for the fourth consecutive year to win is the first. The policeman followed by Lorenzo Magri precedes the bearer of the Fiamme Azzurre who returned to train with Franca Bianconi by about 11 points (273.96 to 262.98). The 19-year-old from Merano focuses above all on jumps: in the free he proposes three quadruples (lutz, flip and lutz) and seven triples, six of which in combination, although not all clean. The 23-year-old from Milan has an overall more complete package and greater elegance, but less effective rotations. It remains that the sector, with two like this, has long since found the possible protagonists for Milan-Cortina 2026. Behind them, as a year ago, Gabriele Frangipani (216.69).

Women

The female competition is of inferior quality. Even if Lara Guttman, in turn bearer of the Fiamme Oro, winner of the second Italian title, grows season after season. The 19-year-old from thirty trained by Gabriele Minchio, the best in both segments of the competition, closes with 187.43 points, preceding the 14-year-old Anna Pezzetta, a pleasant revelation (177.47) and Marina Piredda (173.67). Thanks to the team event, Guttman will soon realize the Olympic dream. On the other hand, individual participation is in the balance: excluded after the qualifying test in Oberstdorf in September for the trifle of 75/100 points, it is a sort of first reserve. In the event of a waiver, in fact, the share will go to Italy. Giving Lara a double chance.

Couples

Emotion at Palavela: Nicole Della Monica-Matteo Guarise conquer the seventh consecutive title. But the series is destined to end here. Because the tandem led by Cristina Mauri, who gave so much to the tricolor movement, will dissolve at the end of the season – if not already at the end of the Games. Nicole, after many years of flattering activity and a fourth Olympics (the first, in Vancouver 2010, played together with Yannick Kocon), will hang up her skates, Matteo will instead look for a new partner to chase Milan-Cortina 2026, when he will be 37 years old . The policemen, meanwhile, with 195.89, precede Rebecca Ghilardi-Filippo Ambrosini (180.82) and Sara Conti-Niccolò Macii (169.36). Consolidated hierarchies: it’s the same twelve-month podium. With Ghilardi-Ambrosini in turn deserving of a presence in Beijing.

Dance

It’s poker (after eight consecutive second places) also for Charlene Guignard-Marco Fabbri. The proven duo of the Blue Flames led by Barbara Fusar Poli, with 221.51 points and exciting programs, confirms all its qualities and partly refers to the disappointment for the postponement due to problems related to the management of the Covid pandemic of the Grand final Prix to six that was scheduled for next weekend in Osaka, Japan, won thanks to the prestigious second places in Skate Canada, in Vancouver and the Rostelecom Cup, in Sochi. Next goal: a European medal after the bronze in Minsk 2019 and the fourth square in Graz 2020. Then, of course, the Games. Second are Carolina Moscheni-Francesco Fioretti (159.10) and third Elisabetta Leccardi-Mattia Dalla Torre (143.19), a newly formed couple made up of athletes who, until a few months ago, skated individually in the artistic field. Absent Carolina Portesi Peroni-Michael Chrastecky (she is recovering from a serious injury). By the way: interesting the out-of-competition performance by Leia Dozzi-Pietro Papetti, another fresh tandem (she competed for Hungary, but will represent Italy), which in Turin was followed on the balustrade by the great Canadian Scott Moir: the two are now based at the London Campus of the Ice Academy in Montreal, led by the Olympian of the specialty in 2010 and 2018 together with Tessa Virtue. In the context also assigned the junior title, prerogative of Nicole Rosanna Calderari-Marco Cilli (149.91).

Scandicci struggles in Rome, Cuneo conquers Casalmaggiore. Trento and Bust in the field

Tenth day of the women’s A-1 championship with Monza winning the fifth consecutive race while Scandicci struggles a lot in Rome

Monza-Florence 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17)

Fifth win in a row, seventh of the season, for Monza. Il Bisonte Firenze, who arrived at the Monza Arena with the desire to continue to the precious success obtained this week in Conegliano but never really able to scare Danesi and her companions. Constant defense, monstrous wall (team 14 in three sets) and a continuous and well-executed serve by the whole group, are the weapons with which Vero Volley spreads the Tuscans, which appeared to be able to counteract the hosts only in the second. set, then resolved by Monza with a decisive escape in the final signed by the accelerations of Stysiak, Davyskiba and Van Hecke. Instead, the walls of Candi and Danesi, on the verge of perfect in reading Nwakalor first and Enweonwu then, and the fabulous direction of Orro, who appeared on a day of grace both in the phase of setting that in defense. For Monza, among the positive news in view of the Champions League home match on Wednesday night against Mulhouse, there is also the return of Lazovic: for her also a point and a lot of confidence.

Rome-Scandicci 1-3 (21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 27-29)

Scandicci struggles not a little to beat a difficult Rome that does not give up even after going down 2-0. Barbolini makes a turnover but then is forced to put Pietrini and Bia back on the field to close the game. First set balanced up to 16 all with a decent Klimets and a good Cecconello. Scandicci dominates with natalia and Orthmann but does not find the winning detachment until mid-set. then manages the +3. In the second set the capitoline grows with Pamio as protagonist who drags Rome forward +3. Scandicci’s comeback comes with the entry of Camera and Antropova and the blows of Natalia. Rome is not discouraged, takes the Brazilian wall measurements and extends to +2 again. Scandicci works with experience and patience, Angeloni enters to reinforce the reception and the Tuscans overtake at the very last minute. Rome starts strong in the third going forward 4-1. the capitoline supports the return of Scandicci with Klimets driving force, decisive even on the wall. Toscane in difficulty and Rome takes the opportunity to reopen the race. Pietrini and Bia enter the fourth, left to rest at the start of the game. Still a good start to Rome that hurts the guests against the wall. Scandicci struggles to find a balance but slowly gets back down in the score and closes the race in the final rush

Casalmaggiore-Cuneo 1-3 (24-26, 26-24, 17-25, 23-25)

Casalmaggiore is a flash team, which has never played a tie break. Cuneo, on the other hand, is used to marathons. It may be for this reason that, in a race that does not last five sets but is extended beyond measure (two partial to the advantages and the last one almost reaches it) in the end the Piedmontese win, who shorten in the standings and probably compromise – calendar in hand – the qualification of the Heavy Transport to the Italian Cup. The first two sets are identical but mirrored, that is, they turn the other way around: Casalmaggiore dominates the first until 15-9, then Gicquel revives Cuneo who, also taking advantage of Caruso’s verve and Jasper’s punctuality, comes back up to 17-19 with a 10-2 run. However, it goes to the advantages, because Braga remedies his mistakes in reception, after which the Brazilian wastes the serve and Jasper draws the hands out of 0-1. On the wall Cuneo struggled a lot at the start, but then he seems to dominate in the fundamental (he will finish 14-5) and in the race. Jasper’s block on Rahimova is the photograph of the first part of the game, with the Azerbaijani still out of condition, but from 11-16 (Gicquel stops Braga) it goes to 20-19 for Casalmaggiore with a counterbreak that overturns the set as already happened, with reversed parts, in the first part. A new point to point, with the video check to increase the tension, is resolved by Shcherban with two dunks in a row to the advantages. The third set is the only one really dominated by one of the two teams: it is Cuneo who always exploits the wall (Signorile puts his own, as well as a lucid direction) and for Casalmaggiore Malual is not enough, who also plays a few points but almost all Well. From 15-19 onwards Cuneo no longer allows Casalmaggiore to return. The fourth set is as intense as the first two: no one tears up until 17-20 on Shcherban’s error that seems to direct the game. But no: the Vbc also goes ahead on 23-22 thanks to a positioning error of the Cuneo defense on Braga’s lob. But then Cuneo decides to leave the ciapanò and with Jasper and Gicquel, not surprisingly the best, closes the practice.

The study, forthcoming in the Journal of Marketing, is titled “Managing the Versioning Decision over an App’s Lifetime” and is authored by Seoungwoo Lee, Jie Zhang, and Michel Wedel.

Is it really over for paid mobile apps? The mobile app industry is unique because free apps are much more prevalent than paid apps in most app categories, contrary to many other product markets where free products primarily play a supportive role to the paid products. Apps have been trending toward the free version in the past decade, such that in July 2020, 96% of apps on the Google Play platform were free. However, 63% of the free apps had fewer than a thousand downloads per month and 60% of app publishers generated less than $500 per month in 2015.

Are there ways for paid apps to make free apps more profitable? And how can app publishers improve profitability by strategically deploying or eliminating the paid and free versions of an app over its lifetime? To answer these questions, the research team investigated app publisher’s decisions to offer the free, paid, or both versions of an app by considering the dynamic interplays between the free and paid versions. The findings offer valuable insights for app publishers on how to manage the versioning decision over an app’s lifetime.

First, the researchers demonstrate how the free and paid versions influence each other’s current demand, future demand, and in-app revenues. They find that either version’s cumulative user base stimulates future demand for both versions via social influence, yet simultaneously offering both versions hurts the demand for each other in the current period. Also, the presence of a paid version reduces the in-app purchase rate and active user base and, therefore, the in-app purchase and advertising revenues of a free app, but the presence of a free version appears to have little negative impact on the paid version of an app. Therefore, app publishers should be mindful of the paid version’s negative impact on the free version. In general, simultaneously offering both versions helps a publisher achieve cost savings via economies of scale, but it reduces revenues from each version compared to when either version is offered alone.

Second, analyses show that the most common optimal launch strategy is to offer the paid version first. Paid apps can generate download revenues from the first day of sales, while in-app revenues from either version rely on a sizeable user base which takes time to build. So, publishers can rely on paid apps to generate operating capital and recuperate development and launch costs much more quickly. Nonetheless, there are variations across app categories, which are related to differences in apps’ abilities to monetize from different revenue sources. For example, the percentage of utility apps that should launch a paid app is particularly high because they have a lower ability to monetize the free app through in-app purchase items and advertising. In contrast, entertainment apps should mostly launch a free version because they have high availability of in-app ad networks and in-app purchase items.

Third, the optimal versioning decisions and their evolutionary patterns change over an app’s ages and vary by app category. The evolutionary patterns of optimal versioning decisions show that, for most apps, the relative profitability of the free version tends to increase with app age while that of the paid version tends to decline. Therefore, the profitability of simultaneously offering both versions tends to increase with app age until a certain point, after which the free-only version will take over as the most common optimal versioning decision, which occurs about 1.5 years after launch on average for the (relatively more successful) apps in the data. Also, there is substantial cross-category variations in the versioning evolution patterns. For example, unlike for the other categories examined, the optimal versioning decision for most utility apps in our data is to stay with the paid-only option throughout an app’s lifetime.

This research reveals the dynamic interplay between free and paid versions of an app over its lifetime and suggests a possible remedy for the failure of apps. As the researchers explain, “Many apps that start out with a free version fail because they cannot generate enough revenue to sustain early-stage operations. We urge app publishers to pay close attention to the interplay between free and paid app versions and to improve the profitability of free apps by strategically deploying or eliminating their paid version counterparts over an app’s lifetime.”

After the last two bad performances finally Sarri’s Lazio is seen again. The Biancocelesti played a dominant first half at Ferraris against Sampdoria, with a fluid, consistent (64%) and effective ball possession, creating many opportunities and scoring three. Decisive, in addition to the usual Milinkovic and Immobile, was Zaccagni, who Sarri chose him and not Felipe Anderson. The former Verona playmaker lights up with two assists for the first two goals. Then Immobile gets hurt, Lazio turns off the light in the second half and Milinkovic-Savic gets sent off, but Sampdoria doesn’t have the strength to reopen the game. At the end, Gabbiadini scores the goal of the flag, but by now it is too late to hope for a comeback.

FIRST HALF – Sampdoria tries to start strong, having the first chance in the 4 ‘with Ekdal who kicks from a tight angle but finds the opposition of Luiz Felipe in a crash. Then it’s just Lazio. At 7 ‘the biancocelesti find the advantage with Milinkovic-Savic. The Serbian, found in the area by a Zaccagni on fire, kicks first and finds the corner of the plate: Audero can do little. Ten minutes later Zaccagni is still inventing. The former Verona seats an opponent, jumps another, then, unbalanced, loses his balance but still manages to somehow get the ball into the area at Immobile. His striker and captain is, as always, very quick to pounce on the ball, he hits it dirty but just enough to displace Audero and make him roll into the goal, near the far post. Having obtained the double advantage, Lazio manage the game with enormous ball possession (64%) and hide the ball from Sampdoria. Before the 3-0, Immobile touches the brace with a header from two steps, with a sure shot, but finds Audero’s miraculous response. A short time passes, however, and the brace arrives. At 36 ‘, after another beautiful team maneuver, Milinkovic verticalizes first for Immobile who, as a great striker he is, lets the ball flow, leaving a surprised Chabot in place and then crosses right at the far post.

SECOND HALF – In the second half the music changes. D’Aversa changes three players: inside Caputo, Dragusin and Adrien Silva for Verre, Quagliarella and Ferrari. Lazio loses Immobile, limping out at the interval, Muriqi enters his place. At 52 ‘Sampdoria’s reaction finally arrives: Silva serves Thorsby, who kicks on goal but finds a careful Strakosha. On the developments of the corner, Dragusin touches the head goal. Then it is Gabbiadini who comes close, with a header too but on a cross from Bereszynski, but Strakosha works a miracle and takes the ball out of the low corner. At 67 ‘Milinkovic-Savic, captain after the exit of Immobile, commits a sensational naivety. First he commits a foul, then, when he is booked, he protests visibly and Fabbri pulls out the second yellow card. Sampdoria tries to play the game but without creating big chances (only one, actually, with Yoshida on a corner kick). At 89 there is room for the goal of the Sampdoria flag: it was scored by Gabbiadini. Galvanized, Sampdoria pours forward and has another chance with a nice long shot from Ekdal and then with a scrum at the end in the Strakosha area. It ends 3-1 for Lazio, which momentarily returns to the Europe area, waiting for Juve. Sampdoria remains firm at fifteen points, +5 over Genoa third from last. Friday night’s derby will be crucial.

Topological crystals function on the basis of specific structures, the properties of which remain largely unaffected by disturbances and deviations. While in normal photonic crystals the effects needed for light manipulation are fragile and can be affected by defects in the material structure, for example, in topological photonic crystals, they are protected from this. The topological structures allow properties such as unidirectional light propagation and increased robustness for guiding photons, small particles of light — features that are crucial for future light-based technologies.

Photonic crystals influence the propagation of electromagnetic waves with the help of an optical band gap for photons, which blocks the movement of light in certain directions. Scattering usually occurs — some photons are reflected back, while others are reflected away. “With topological light states that span an extended range of photonic crystals, you can prevent this. In normal optical waveguides and fibers, back reflection poses a major problem because it leads to unwanted feedback. Loss during propagation hinders large-scale integration in optical chips, in which photons are responsible for transmitting information. With the help of topological photonic crystals, novel unidirectional waveguides can be achieved that transmit light without any back reflection, even in the presence of arbitrarily large disorder,” explains Professor Thomas Zentgraf, head of the Ultrafast Nanophotonics research group at Paderborn University. The concept, which has its origins in solid-state physics, has already led to numerous applications, including robust light transmission, topological delay lines, topological lasers and quantum interference.

“It was also recently proven that topological photonic crystals based on a weak topology with a crystal dislocation in the periodic structure also exhibit these special properties and also support what are known as topologically-protected strongly spatially localised light states. When something is topologically protected, any changes in the parameters do not affect the protected properties. Localised light states are extremely useful for non-linear amplification, miniaturisation of photonic components and integration of photonic quantum chips,” adds Zentgraf. In this context, weak topological states are special states for the light that result not only from the topological band structure, but also from the formation of the crystal structure.

In a joint experiment, researchers from Paderborn University and RWTH Aachen University used a special near-field optical microscope to demonstrate the existence of such strongly localised light states in topological structures. “We showed that the versatility of weak topology can produce a strongly spatially localised optical field in an intentionally induced structural dislocation,” explains Jinlong Lu, a PhD student in Zentgraf’s group and lead author of the paper. “Our study demonstrates a viable strategy for achieving a topologically-protected, localised zero-dimensional state for light,” adds Zentgraf. With their work, the researchers have proven that near-field microscopy is a valuable tool for characterising topological structures with nanoscale resolution at optical frequencies.

The findings provide a basis for the use of strongly localised optical light states based on weak topology. Phase-change materials with a tunable refractive index could therefore also be used for the nanostructures used in the experiment to produce robust and active topological photonic elements. “We’re now working on concepts to equip the dislocation centres in the crystal structure with special quantum emitters for single photon generation,” says Zentgraf, adding: “These could then be used in future optical quantum computers, for which single photon generation plays an important role.”

1921, 1971, 2021.

Chelsea and Arsenal offered an FA Cup final worthy of all those who fought for something as banal as the right to play football.

And the Swedes’ involvement in development should not be underestimated.

Exactly one hundred years ago, FA banned women’s football, fifty years later the ban was lifted. It was emotional to see two of the pioneers, Lesley Lloyd and Elsie Cook, carry out the cup trophy at a well-stocked Wembley this gray-backed winter day while drying their tear-filled eyes.

December 5 is and will remain a special date in English football history. Although the FA Cup final is usually played in the spring heat, the two biggest clubs offered an unforgettable battle worthy of all those who have fought for the sport over the years.

The face outwards for women’s football

Another pioneer, Emma Hayes, is no longer the sole coach. The 45-year-old is the very face of English women’s football, with the kind of authoritative personality that even wins over skeptical men (she was praised for her expert role during the men’s European Championships this summer).

For a long time there was something Hayes was missing, and then no domestic titles are meant. Arsène Wenger had Alex Ferguson, Pep Guardiola’s complicated relationship with José Mourinho. WSL needed someone who stirred the pot and contributed to a headline-friendly storyline.

Imagine that this someone turned out to be a 38-year-old Swede.

Ever since Jonas Eidevall fell to his knees with a triumphant roar in the opening match at The Emirates, a cold – albeit respectful – war has been waged. Hayes is a winner of rank and hardly appreciated the Arsenal coach’s theatrical celebration after the victory against Chelsea.

“We have the biggest rivalry with Man City,” Hayes said recently, something that few went on. Arsenal are the team to beat nowadays, much thanks to Eidevall.

Eye-catching starting elves

Both London clubs exhibited eye-catching starting elves on Sunday afternoon. Magdalena Eriksson left back and Jess Carter center back? Outer Erin Cuthbert as right back?

Okay then.

Eidevall, on the other hand, invested in more traditional midfielders in Wubben-Moy and Beattie and put Lia Wälti in midfield. It can be stated that Hayes got significantly more out of his formation during the initial 30 minutes, the fact is that Chelsea should have had a bigger lead when there was a break.

Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr constantly ran in behind Arsenal’s back line and had what felt like countless finishes. The 1-0 goal came from the fact that the former Linköping player and Eidevall-compatible Frida Manuum was responsible for a blunder she probably would rather forget, after which Kirby took advantage of the carelessness by pulling in the lead goal.

It was only when Katie McCabe and Beath Mead changed sides that Arsenal came into the match, but it did not help much. When Kerr pushed the ball into the net in the 57th minute with a smart finish next to the post, Chelsea held both hands on the trophy. The Australian, who was probably upset about the missed positions during the first half, looked mainly relieved.

No black cats were needed

When Kerr then spectacularly lobbed in 3-0 behind goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, Emma Hayes finally raised her fist in a victory gesture. Still more sane than her new duelist was at The Emirates in September.

At the press conference before the final, Eidevall revealed his superstition about black cats.

“If Emma Hayes sees this, she will probably let a thousand cats out and let them run across our street,” the Swede added jokingly.

Today, Chelsea did not have to take extreme measures to secure their third FA Cup title. The better team won at Wembley Stadium, fifty years after women were allowed to play football again on these islands. The sport still has a long way to go, but regardless of team affiliation, it can hardly be more beautiful than this.

  1. Albert T. Liu, Shuai Chen, Prasant Kumar Jena, Lili Sheng, Ying Hu, Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan. Probiotics Improve Gastrointestinal Function and Life Quality in Pregnancy. Nutrients, 2021; 13 (11): 3931 DOI: 10.3390/nu13113931

Nausea and vomiting affect about 85% of pregnancies and can significantly impact quality of life, particularly during early pregnancy.

“The cause of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is unknown to this date. Various theories have been proposed, but none of them is conclusive,” said Albert T. Liu, lead author for the study and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

“Nausea, vomiting and constipation during pregnancy can significantly diminish the quality of patients’ lives. Once nausea and vomiting during pregnancy progress, they can become difficult to control, and sometimes the patient even needs to be hospitalized,” Liu said.

Beneficial microbes

Probiotics are referred to as “beneficial bacteria.” They can be found in foods like yogurt, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut and tempeh. Probiotics are also available as food supplements. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, other than vitamins, probiotics or prebiotics were the third most commonly used dietary supplement for adults.

Probiotics are thought to support the community of different microbes, often referred to as the “gut microbiome,” found in the gastrointestinal tract.

During pregnancy, hormones like estrogen and progesterone increase, bringing about many physical changes. These increases can also change the gut microbiome, which likely affects the digestive system functions and causes unwanted symptoms like nausea, vomiting and constipation.

The researchers set out to determine whether supplementing with a probiotic could be beneficial for gastrointestinal function during pregnancy.

The study lasted for 16 days. A total of 32 participants took a probiotic capsule twice a day for six days and then took two days off. They then repeated the cycle.

The probiotics were available over-the-counter and mainly containedLactobacillus., a type of good bacteria. Each capsule contained approximately 10 billion live cultures at the time of manufacture.

Participants kept 17 daily observations of their symptoms during the duration of the study, for a total of 535 observations for the researchers to statistically assess.

What the researchers found was that taking the probiotic significantly reduced nausea and vomiting. Nausea hours (the number of hours participants felt nauseous) were reduced by 16%, and the number of times they vomited was reduced by 33%. Probiotic intake also significantly improved symptoms related to quality of life, such as fatigue, poor appetite and difficulty maintaining normal social activities, as scored by questionnaires.

Probiotics were also found to reduce constipation significantly.

“Over the years, I’ve observed that probiotics can reduce nausea and vomiting and ease constipation. It’s very encouraging that the study proved this to be true,” said Liu. “Probiotics have also benefited many of my other patients who weren’t in the study,” said Liu.

New clues from gut microbes and byproducts

Participants also contributed fecal specimens before and during the study. The samples were analyzed to identify the type and number of microbes and the different byproducts of digestion.

This allowed the researchers to examine whether biomarkers in the fecal specimens corresponded with more severe nausea and assess how the probiotics affected participants who began the study with different baseline biomarkers.

One finding was that a low amount of bacteria that carry an enzyme named bile salt hydrolase, which generates bile acid to absorb nutrients, was associated with more pregnancy-related vomiting. Probiotics increase bile salt hydrolase-producing bacteria, which may explain why the supplements decreased levels of nausea and vomiting.

Another finding was that high levels of the gut microbes Akkermansia and A. muciniphila at the beginning of the study were associated with more vomiting. The probiotic significantly reduced the amount of those particular microbes and also reduced vomiting. This suggests Akkermansia and A. muciniphila may be reliable biomarkers that can predict vomiting in pregnancy.

Another finding was that vitamin E levels increased after taking probiotics. Higher levels of vitamin E were associated with low vomiting scores.

“This research provides key insights about the impact of gut microbes on gastrointestinal function during pregnancy. Our gut microbiota explains why we are what we eat, and why bacteria-generated metabolites and products have a huge impact on our health,” said Wan. “They affect the gastrointestinal tract as well as skin health and neurological function.”

Although the findings are intriguing, the researchers caution that due to the small sample size, further studies will be needed to confirm the effects of the probiotics.

“Our previous work showed the benefits of probiotics in preventing liver inflammation. The current study might be one of the first to show the benefits of probiotics in pregnancy,” said Wan. “It would be interesting and important to further test whether probiotics can reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy in cancer patients.”
