The research demonstrates how artificial molecular machines — wholly synthetic molecular components that produce machine-like movements — grafted on surfaces can be used to recruit molecules actively onto these surfaces at very high concentrations, thereby storing significant amounts of energy.

The new adsorption mechanism, called mechanisorption, results from non-equilibrium pumping to form mechanical bonds between the adsorbent (the surface) and the adsorbate (the molecules). Details of the study, titled “Active mechanisorption driven by pumping cassettes,”will be published online on Oct. 21 in the journal Science.

The mechanism uses redox (i.e., reduction followed by oxidation) and acid-base chemistry to adsorb and desorb a fleet of rings precisely onto and off the surface of a solid-state two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF). In the study, the molecules brought to the surface were rings, but it is anticipated that the approach can be generalized to include many other molecules by functionalizing the rings for a start.

“The importance of this piece of research lies in the fact that it is the first major fundamental advance in surface chemistry since physisorption and chemisorption — both equilibrium-based phenomena — were the order of the day back in the 1930s,” said Northwestern’s Sir Fraser Stoddart, who received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work involving the design and synthesis of molecular machines.

Stoddart, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, is the corresponding author of the investigation, in collaboration with University of Maine professor Dean Astumian, a theorist in the department of physics and astronomy, and Omar Farha, an expert in MOF chemistry and a professor of chemistry at Northwestern. Liang Feng and Yunyan Qiu, postdoctoral fellows in Stoddart’s lab, are co-first authors of the paper.

“There’s good reason to believe that the concept of mechanisorption will command textbook attention one day,” Stoddart said. “If chemists can work out how mechanisorption can be incorporated in active structures, the storage of gases like hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane will enter a whole new world and become a different ball game altogether.”

The research illustrates the synergy that results from combining theory with experiment. The idea of a pumping cassette arose from Astumian’s consideration of the effects of oscillating electric fields on membrane-bound enzymes. (A pumping cassette can be likened to a “valley” whose “floor” can be moved up and down surrounded by two “mountain passes” whose heights can be raised and lowered such that the molecules are obliged to move in one direction.)This molecular contraption was synthetically implemented in Stoddart’s laboratory using rotaxanes — long dumbbell-shaped molecules — terminated on one or both ends with a recognition site for rings surrounded by two groups to provide kinetic barriers between the bulk where the rings are swimming around in solution and polymer chains where the rings are collected one at a time following each redox cycle. Importantly, these barrier-forming groups can be designed to respond differently to changes in their environment. These pumping cassettes can be incorporated onto many types of polymer chains, giving rise to numerous possible applications.

Mechanisorption has important implications for storage and controlled release of many different molecules. This work focuses on recruitment of ring molecules to surfaces, but it is anticipated that these rings can be functionalized to bring many different types of molecules at high concentration to surfaces.

“The mechanisorption mechanism bears some features in common with spray cans,” Stoddart said, “where different materials are stored at high pressure and then released by pressing a trigger. The mechanisorbed substances, however, remain in mechanical equilibrium even while being packaged far from thermodynamic equilibrium. The mechanism of triggered release involves only diffusion, a process which, while seemingly slow from a macroscopic perspective, is remarkably fast in these systems.”

Astumian at University of Maine points out that the research is also important for understanding one of the deepest questions in chemistry. “What are the principles by which simple matter becomes complex?” he said. “A key point is that, while thermodynamics determines the most likely structures near equilibrium, kinetics plays the dominant role in selecting structures when far-from-equilibrium.”

In the 1930s, Irving Langmuir and John Lennard-Jones observed that adsorbates interact with surfaces through van der Waals interactions (physisorption) and/or electronic interactions (chemisorption). Adsorption is generally considered to be a passive process in which the adsorbate moves from a high to a low concentration area, so the concentration of surface adsorbate always changes towards the equilibrium direction. In the Northwestern study, however, the researchers demonstrate that active adsorption can be achieved using artificial molecular machines.

“The potential utility of mechanisorption in technology, such as chemical capacitors, will provide a completely new way to store and manipulate energy, information and matter on surfaces that have never been imagined before,” co-first author Feng said. “The advent of the mechanical bond is sending major ripples through both chemistry and materials science. Given a little more time, the general area of sorption will witness a profound change after close on a century during which period physisorption and chemisorption have dominated surface and interfacial science.”

Co-first author Qiu added, “This research is the first example of utilizing artificial molecular pumps to recruit and adsorb molecules actively onto solid surfaces and opens the door to operating artificial molecular machines on the surfaces of a range of functional materials, ranging from zeolites and metal oxides to polymer networks and micellar nanoparticles.”

Experts familiar with the work but not involved in the study noted the significance of the research and its potential applications.

“The extraction of chemicals from solution into and onto solids and surfaces underpins the sequestering of waste and pollutants, the recovery of precious metals, heterogeneous catalysis, many forms of chemical and biological analysis and separation science, and numerous other technologies,” said David Leigh, Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

“Until now there has been no way to actively drive such processes, but the use of molecular machinery changes that, through a mechanism the Northwestern team term ‘mechanisorption,’” he said. “Miniaturization has driven advances in technology through the ages, and using machines the size of molecules — molecular nanotechnology — to power adsorption will surely continue that trend.”

Jonathan Sessler, holder of the Doherty-Welch Chair in Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, said of the research, “It is a game changer. It opens up a new chapter in the all-important and typically energy-intensive area of separations. The author team has shown for the first time that it is possible to use mechanically linked pumping strategies to concentrate highly charged species against a Coulombic gradient.

“The use of electrochemical methods to drive this chemical off-equilibrium process opens up the possibility of direct use of solar power to enable separations,” Sessler said. “Ultimately, this approach could allow for cost-effective capture, remediation and purification of key industrial targets, such as hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide and micropollutants. Shorter term, it is likely that counterion effects could be used to drive anion recognition, while the use of asymmetric and non-racemic threading entities might allow for chiral separations. The opportunities seem almost endless.”

“I’m already looking at the table, I can read it, but you won’t hear anything else from me about the championship, the season is too young for that,” emphasized Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle. In addition, the division of points after 22 rounds should not be ignored. “It’s so fast in football. We are marching ahead and things are not going so well for many other teams at the moment, but Sturm is a team that is strong against it, they have shown that, ”the 33-year-old analyzed.

His record is impressive, in 19 competitive games there was only a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League at Sevilla FC and most recently in the league in Altach (1-1). Christoph Freund, who was questioned about his coaching decision in the summer, had the right nose for Jesse Marsch’s search for a successor. “He is an extremely interesting coach, and we will hear a lot about him in the next few years in international football,” said Salzburg’s sports director with certainty.

Salzburg couldn’t be stopped by storm

After losing points for the first time last week, Salzburg scored the next victory. In the top game against pursuers Sturm Graz, the “Bulls” win 4: 1.

There is also satisfaction in him. “Many have said that starting with the young team and coach would be difficult. Now we’re starting as pure as never before, so that’s a cool story. ”The difference to previous seasons is that you conceded few goals, currently there are only seven in the championship. Freund has no bright prospects for the competition. “We know how young the team is. I am convinced that we will get even better. “

Adeyemi and Co. “always want more”

This includes Karim Adeyemi, who increased his yield with his brace to 14 goals in 18 competitive games. He has been successful in the league ten times, making him number one. “We can be satisfied with the game and the result, we acted superbly as a team and confirmed Wednesday’s performance,” said the 19-year-old. On Wednesday, Wolfsburg, an international top opponent in the premier class, was also put on the hit list.

There was no sign of a drop in performance four days later. “As you can see, we always want more,” stressed Adeyemi. This also causes a stir internationally and arouses desires. It is speculated at which top club the neo-DFB team striker could end up. But Freund almost ruled out an exit in winter: “I can’t imagine what scenario should arise that he doesn’t finish the season with us.”

Okafor is really blooming

At the moment Adeyemi harmonizes particularly well with Noah Okafor, who has finally blossomed in the “bull” dress. “Noah is in great shape, we get along really well,” said Adeyemi. After his two assists, the Swiss has eight goals and five assists in 17 competitive games.

“It wasn’t always easy for me here, but I never let myself be dragged down. Now I feel in great shape and the whole club is behind me. It can go on like this, ”said Okafor. The next chance to shine is on Wednesday in the round of 16 of the Uniqa-ÖFB-Cup at second division spusu St. Pölten. “We are in an extremely good mood and want to continue to use this performance consistently,” said Jaissle with a view to the next tasks.

Storm in “not an easy phase”

In any case, Sturm has no chance and is also struggling with personnel problems. The situation got even worse on Sunday because captain Stefan Hierländer had problems warming up the meniscus, which prevented a mission. “Salzburg is playing even more straightforwardly and much faster to the top than last season. Our team performance was simply not close enough and we made far too many mistakes, ”summarized coach Christian Ilzer.

One of them went down by goalie Jörg Siebenhandl, who had already blundered in the 0: 1 in the Europa League against Real Sociedad on Thursday, and this time the 1: 3 practically made himself. “Jörg has already saved us so much. There are always phases like this in football, he is stable as a person, as a team we are 100 percent there for him, ”said Ilzer, who did not want to hear anything about a goalie discussion.

He cannot deny the downward trend in his squad, which lost four of the last five competitive games – including twice in the Europa League. “Overall, it is not an easy phase for us, but we will come out stronger,” said Ilzer. League competitor Ried, who was only defeated 1-0 in round eleven, is already waiting for the eighth finals at home on Wednesday.

Me pareció fascinante.

No especialmente.

Lucasfilm continues to prepare new projects and one of them is Andor, a series starring Diego Luna that will introduce us to the years of the young rebel before the events observed in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – 85%. Although we already have the names of some stars that will be part of the cast, this afternoon the supposed addition of Andy Serkis, veteran actor who was already part of the distant galaxy in the sequel trilogy, is announced. In the following paragraphs we discuss all the details.

Do not miss: Mike Flanagan wants to make a Star Wars horror movie

Serkis gained global fame thanks to his portrayal of Gollum in the trilogy of The Lord of the rings; Over time he has established ties with the most important Hollywood studios and by 2015 we see him be part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens – 92%, a film in which he plays the Supreme Leader Snoke, head of the First Order and, at that time, a mysterious villain who would bring darkness to the galaxy.

Unfortunately, the intrigue around Snoke didn’t last long and Rian Johnson killed the character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi – 91%, ending up quite anticlimactic with the new enemy. But fans of the saga are well aware that death is not an impediment to bring back the most beloved figures of the brand.

In accordance with Making Star Wars (via Comicbook), Andy Serkis would have been hired by Lucasfilm to be part of Andor. The media does not provide details about the character that will be left in the hands of the actor, however, it does not rule out the possibility that it is Snoke in relatively young years (remember that it is an imperfect clone of Emperor Palpatine, so anything could happen ). On the other hand, it is also committed that Serkis would take a human role in the Cassian Andor series, arguably away from Snoke; This would allow Andy to redeem himself after the antagonist’s insane conclusion in The Last Jedi.

Filming Andor It ended at the end of September and is now in post-production. Lucasfilm has not confirmed a release date but it will surely hit the Disney Plus platform sometime later in 2022. Although it is not a series loaded with Jedi or Sith characters (apparently), fans hope it has enough action and adventure. as if to elevate it above the sequel trilogy, at the height of The Mandalorian – 91%.

Lucasfilm soon discovered that the small screen is an ideal alternative to the stories of Star Wars. The sequel trilogy by Disney was very expensive and did not turn out well, so the studio opted for new adventures with less investment but with greater global impact. Productions like The Mandalorian – 91%, Star Wars: The Bad Batch – 95% e incluso Star Wars: Visions – certified fresh tiny100%, they have earned the affection of the public and even the loyalty of strangers, ensuring a bright future for the galaxy far away on television. How long will such a trend last?

But long before AndorThe Book of Boba Fett is coming to Disney Plus, starring the famous bounty hunter (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), who will give meaning to an entirely new and exciting adventure on Tatooine. Both went ahead in their mission with Din Djarin and now is the time to make things clear on the desert planet. The first chapter will arrive on Disney Plus on December 29, is success already assured? At the moment there is no release date for the new season of The Mandalorian but weeks ago the start of filming was confirmed. Djarin and Grogu’s journey still has a lot to offer, as well as everything Star Wars.

For years, there was an urban legend that Avril Lavigne died in 2003 and the Canadian singer was replaced by a replica. It’s an unfounded urban legend, of course, but reality sometimes generates stories that quote even the wildest conspiracy theorists. Such is the case with Britney Spears, who passed away on September 30, perhaps after her father retired from guardianship after a long tug of war, but if we look at the pop star’s Instagram page, the photos and rather strange videos overwhelm the image of a woman generously.

But let’s not go that far, not just because

The documentary offers more than a detailed account of how the life of one of the most successful artists of the millennium turned into hell, and how his father became his guardian, who for so long had total control over his daughter.

Obviously, it’s intriguing to fans how the movie features the jingle of the star for nearly a decade and a half in chronological order, but it’s also a useful piece for viewers less interested in pop music.

It represents an America to which we hardly feel alien: this America is not the land of freedom, but the land of capitalist slavery.

In the United States, in addition to disabled citizens, official guardians are appointed, who, in addition to their property and medical treatment, have the right to determine who can contact their protectors. Today, almost a million and a half citizens live under a similar guardianship and, of course, the system is open to a series of abuses.

The question may arise: If a young A-list star could easily fall into the trap of legal scams, what could the victim expect with less support, insignificant relationship history, and no media record?

However, Britney vs. Spears focuses on the main character’s struggle, though that’s what says a lot about the community around her. The singer was only seventeen when her debut album,… One One, flew to the top in one fell swoop: to date, the title track of one of the album’s best-selling albums has been played non-stop on radios and televisions released. Two more tablets in the next two years, oops! … I Did It Again (2000) and Britney (2001) said that if they didn’t do anything again, they would continue to be an indelible icon of light music.

However, to gain popularity, he had to pay a rather large check. We’re not saying anything new about the fact that celebrities can’t even go to the corner store without bumping into a paparazzi, yet the hysteria surrounding Britney is beyond our imagination. In one scene, a woman stops at a gas station but cannot refuel as dozens of paparazzi rush to her car amid constant movies like the zombie hordes in The Walking Dead series.

It is no coincidence that for someone well done, that is, in our case much less harmful, hundreds of thousands of dollars can reach the hands of the paparazzi.

Apparently neither this nor the star’s brief but more troublesome first marriage helped her develop serious mental problems, which she treated with medication. The latter did not contribute to the condemnation of their children after their divorce,

She had played a small role in his life before, and his father, who was particularly well known in business circles, saw an opportunity to gain access to the tens of millions of dollars of his son’s fortune.

Paying the salaries of doctors and lawyers in 2008, she managed to become her daughter’s temporary guardian, first as a temporary guardian. In practice, this means that

Britney Spears couldn’t leave her home without permission, she couldn’t have her money, but she couldn’t even make a decision about her medical care.

As one of the singer’s friends said in the movie, he realized how despicable the prisoner’s prison was when they once went to town together, and then his father called him and said if he hadn’t taken the girl home in half an hour. , would have denounced the kidnapping.

And while janitors can’t officially work, Britney has worked more or less breaks over the past decade – she’s been on American X-Factor, making $ 15 million, but she’s also done numerous tours that have produced dozens of dozen. In millions of dollars.

However, unable to earn an income, her father gave her pocket money of eight thousand dollars a month while gorging the girl on drugs so that she could work as efficiently as possible.

Britney tried several times to terminate the guardianship legally, but the court ignored her requests each time, until recently. And it’s only in recent years that fans have come to realize, based on increasingly bizarre Instagram posts, that there is something very wrong with the singer’s life.

The documentary describes the past in a very detailed way, and although neither Britney nor her father, of course, speak in it, it paints an evocative picture of American justice. And that is precisely why the work is interesting for those who have not yet followed the singer’s musical career.

The show, called ‘Vol. 3’, promises to be more impressive than ever judging by the trailer announcing the appointment that the Barbados diva has shared. A scandal video where the 33-year-old singer and businesswoman wiggles with her ‘garçon’ hair and a tiny sequined model with a pronounced neckline that in some shots is just a thong. “Oh, are you ready?” Wrote the richest female musical artist in the world.

The long-awaited fashion experience will once again feature a cast of models and actors debuting the latest Savage X Fenty styles. In addition, the models will be accompanied by some of the biggest names in music in special performances.

The collection is described as a “celebration of the body and movement, with strong lines that trace the contours of the body and unconventional silhouettes that push the limits of individuality.”

Rihanna premiered Savage x Fenty Vol. 1 during New York Fashion Week in September 2019, and after three years of this operation her lingerie empire affordable for all audiences it has ousted Victoria’s Secret herself. In its first parade it featured performances by Big Sean, DJ Khaled and Migos.

In the parade ‘Vol. 2’ familiar faces were seen as Rosalía, Travis Scott, Lizzo, Bella y Gigi Hadid, Demi Moore or Paris Hilton, among others, certifying that the ‘show’ has already become one of the main fashion events of the year.

This year Rihanna will once again serve as executive producer and creative director of the event. A new success in her brilliant career as a businesswoman, a facet with which she has managed to amass a fortune of 1,400 million euros. Her cosmetics brand, which has just released a new perfume, the lingerie brand and everything that revolves around her beauty brands, have made it possible for her to put music aside (five years ago she released her last album and many fans are looking forward to his musical comeback). It is not the first time he has confessed it, but he made a call during Mental Health Awareness Month.

About 1 billion people have a mental disorder and anyone, anywhere, can be affected, according to data from the World Health Organization. In addition, 90% of young people have reported an increase in mental anxiety during the pandemic; more than one billion students in almost every country have been affected by school closures; 80% of young women are worried about their future; and globally, one in six young people has lost their jobs during the pandemic (see the Big 6 recommendations in Young People Championing Post-Pandemic Futures: Policy Recommendations from the Big 6 Youth Organizations).

These are alarming figures, affecting people of all ages and social status. One of them is Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, who again confessed a few days ago, during Mental Health Awareness Month, that he suffers from anxiety. Yes, behind the jokes and laughter, the Deadpool star lives with that reality. This is not the first time he has said it. In 2018, in The New York Times, the actor shed even more light on what he has experienced living with his mental health condition and how he copes with its sometimes devastating control. “I have anxiety. I’ve always had it. It doesn’t matter if I’m happy; I even get anxious about that and have been to the most extreme depths, which is not fun. “

But Reynolds is not alone. About 18.1% of adults in the US, 40 million people, live with an anxiety disorder, according to the American Anxiety and Depression Association. The organization reports that it is the most common form of mental illness in the country. Although occasional episodes of anxiety are a normal part of being human, the Mayo Clinic notes that “people with anxiety disorders often have intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations.”

In an interview, the actor revealed that he has difficulties coping with his family life, as his multiple tasks make him “sick” for sharing with his wife and two daughters. “I just don’t have enough time to take care of everything and I end up suffering from anxiety,” he said.

Anxiety and depression: can they cause memory problems?

On Instagram he posted an emotional post about his battle with anxiety, and the actor Hugh Jackman showed his support for the Deadpool star. The note reads, “May is Mental Health Awareness Month,” and to help raise awareness, he shared that he is delayed in posting the message because he is over-scheduled, which is due to his anxiety. Then he writes: “To all those like me who overload, think too much, work too much, worry too much and above all, know that you are not alone. We don’t talk enough about mental health and we don’t do enough to destigmatize talking about it. ” In response, Jackman showed his support by commenting, “Friend, your honesty is not only brave, but I’m sure it will help countless people who also struggle with anxiety. Good for you!”.

Reynolds, 44, believes her anxiety stems, at least in part, from her childhood in Vancouver, Canada. “Our father was tough,” he told Variety in 2016: “It wasn’t easy with anyone. And it wasn’t easy on himself, either. I think the anxiety could have started there, trying to find ways to control others or trying to control myself. At that time, I never recognized him, he was just a nervous kid. ” As an adult, she said her anxiety has manifested itself in many ways. He used to wake up in the dead of night, in an irrational panic about his future. When he starred in the sitcom ABC Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, he used to provoke the live studio audience, not to disinterestedly relax the fans, but to refocus “the energy of I just want to puke,” he confessed to The New York Times.

The actor has also confessed that he self-medicated in her early 20s as an attempt to avoid symptoms associated with anxiety, saying, “I was partying and just trying to somehow disappear.” Even after decades of being famous, the actor’s anxiety causes him a unique kind of dread before interviews and talk show appearances. Emulating Deadpool’s sardonic presence on stage helped him feel a little more comfortable. Reynolds also uses a meditation app, Headspace, to stay calm, and after years of living with anxiety, she confidently reminds herself before appearances that the horrible feelings will soon pass.

Everyone’s anxiety is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all treatment approach. Some tips for those living with its effects are detailed on the Mayo Clinic website: Get involved in activities you enjoy, avoid drugs or alcohol (which can make symptoms worse), and consider seeking help from a specialist.

Other stars, including Emma Stone, Kristen Bell, Rachel Bloom, Jesse Eisenberg, Ariana Grande, have confessed to suffering from this disorder.

Zodiacal Exoplanets in Time (ZEIT) XII: A Directly-Imaged Planetary-Mass Companion to a Young Taurus M Dwarf Star. Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2021 DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stab3069

Thousands of planets have been discovered around other stars, but what sets this one apart is that it is newly-formed and can be directly observed. The planet, named 2M0437b, joins a handful of objects advancing our understanding of how planets form and change with time, helping shed new light on the origin of the Solar System and Earth. The in-depth research was recently published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

“This serendipitous discovery adds to an elite list of planets that we can directly observe with our telescopes,” explained lead author Eric Gaidos, a professor in the UH Manoa Department of Earth Sciences. “By analyzing the light from this planet we can say something about its composition, and perhaps where and how it formed in a long-vanished disk of gas and dust around its host star.”

The researchers estimate that the planet is a few times more massive than Jupiter, and that it formed with its star several million years ago, around the time the main Hawaiian Islands first emerged above the ocean. The planet is so young that it is still hot from the energy released during its formation, with a temperature similar to the lava erupting from Kilauea Volcano.

Key Maunakea telescopes

In 2018, 2M0437b was first seen with the Subaru Telescope on Maunakea by UH Institute for Astronomy (IfA) visiting researcher Teruyuki Hirano. For the past several years, it has been studied carefully utilizing other telescopes on the mauna.

Gaidos and his collaborators used the Keck Observatory on Maunakea to monitor the position of the host star as it moved across the sky, confirming that planet 2M0437b was truly a companion to the star, and not a more distant object. The observations required three years because the star moves slowly across the sky.

The planet and its parent star lie in a stellar “nursery” called the Taurus Cloud. 2M0437b is on a much wider orbit than the planets in the Solar System; its current separation is about one hundred times the Earth-Sun distance, making it easier to observe. However, sophisticated “adaptive” optics are still needed to compensate for the image distortion caused by Earth’s atmosphere.

“Two of the world’s largest telescopes, adaptive optics technology and Maunakea’s clear skies were all needed to make this discovery,” said co-author Michael Liu, an astronomer at IfA. “We are all looking forward to more such discoveries, and more detailed studies of such planets with the technologies and telescopes of the future.”

Future research potential

Gathering more in-depth research about the newly-discovered planet may not be too far away. “Observations with space telescopes such as NASA’s Hubble and the soon-to-be-launched James Webb Space Telescope could identify gases in its atmosphere and reveal whether the planet has a moon-forming disk,” Gaidos added.

The star that 2M0437b orbits is too faint to be seen with the unaided eye, but currently from Hawaii, the young planet and other infant stars in the Taurus Cloud are almost directly overhead in the pre-dawn hours, north of the bright star Hokuʻula (Aldeberan) and east of the Makaliʻi (Pleiades) star cluster.
