On a subject that the majority of business leaders and stakeholders consider essential but on which it often remains difficult to measure the impact of concrete actions, that of corporate social responsibility (CSR), the recent study published by the Business Mediator and the EcoVadis rating platform bear witness to the remarkable performance of French businesses.

Based on more than 80,000 assessments and specific measures concerning social issues, ethics, the prevention of corruption or respect for the environment, the authors rank French companies in third position, just behind the Sweden and Finland, and well ahead of their German or American counterparts.

The role of the legal framework

The overall score of 54.3/100 obtained by French companies also allows them to reach a level qualified as “adapted” (four levels being defined to qualify the quality of the CSR management system: “exemplary”, “adapted ?, ?incomplete? and ?intangible?).

In detail, the study offers a detailed view of performance on various major themes: environment, social, ethics and, specific to this survey, responsible purchasing. French companies, of all sizes, thus rank first on the ?social? theme, covering human resources and human rights issues.

They appear at 8e rank on the theme of “ethics”, covering corruption, anti-competitive practices and information management. It is moreover on this theme that French companies have recorded the strongest growth over 6 years. They appear at 5e rank on the theme of the environment and at 3e rank on that of responsible purchasing.

Business Ombudsman/EcoVadis (2021)

On a global scale, we see the importance of the regulatory framework on this last criterion of responsible purchasing. In fact, only half of the SMEs/ETIs, not concerned by the legal duty of care, have implemented concrete actions to make more responsible purchases.

On the other hand, 87% of the large companies assessed, of course concerned by this duty of care, have implemented such policies. French companies are therefore probably reaping here the benefits of a restrictive framework that it is now important to overcome in order to transform the constraints into real opportunities.

It is also very enlightening to note that the most advanced companies in terms of responsible purchasing are also those that appear to be the most advanced in the other CSR themes. If the main causal link is indeed that of a general level of maturity in terms of CSR, responsible purchasing now seems to be an excellent relay for spreading responsibility. We had also shown in our research that responsible purchasing was an important source of sustainable value creation.

Progress levers

However, responsible purchasing still remains without doubt the theme on which the most concrete and significant progress can be made (since we are starting from a relatively long distance). They are also a great vehicle for disseminating responsible practices among suppliers and the entire ecosystem. This is also true internally, when responsible purchasing promotes progress in human resources management or the use of physical resources for greater sobriety.

Read more: There is no point in producing responsibly, you have to buy sustainably

One of the lessons of the study lies in the observation that performance in terms of responsible purchasing appears to be consistent with performance in the other dimensions of CSR (environment, social/human rights and ethics). However, advances in responsible purchasing appear to come after progress on other themes.

Progression of the rating of French companies on the ?responsible purchasing? criterion.
Business Ombudsman/EcoVadis (2021)

In other words, responsible purchasing progresses when the company that implements it is already mature on the other dimensions of CSR. The opposite, namely progress recorded on the other dimensions of CSR following gains in the maturity of responsible purchasing, is on the other hand almost never observed.

So far, the other dimensions of CSR seem to have ?pulled? responsible purchasing practices upwards, demonstrating certain beneficial effects of the necessary consistency between internal and external practices. The level of performance achieved by companies on the four dimensions observed today seems to plead for a takeover, through responsible purchasing, in the dissemination of good practices, from the external to the internal so henceforth.

The relatively low maturity of responsible purchasing compared to the other dimensions of CSR therefore offers companies many levers for progress, which, if activated, would contribute to further improving the maturity of the other three dimensions, more traditionally assessed.

Two years after the PACTE law, companies with a mission are developing. Can we speak of a basic trend? Has the health crisis had an impact? What role can employees and managers play in this context? The analysis of Emery Jacquillat, president of the Business Community at Mission and CEO of Camif.

Where are the companies with a mission?

We passed the bar of 500 companies with a mission, at the beginning of 2022. This is a very good dynamic: it is four times more than last year, at the same period. Bearing in mind that in the USA, the ?benefit corporations?, which have existed for more than 10 years, do not exceed the number of 500, and that in Italy, the ?società benefit?, which have existed for 5 years, number 1,500. In France, we should exceed 2,022 companies with a mission by 2023.

The Community of Businesses with a Mission was created in 2018, before the PACTE law (which dates from 2019), by a small group of business leaders who had experimented with this model, and researchers who had theorized it under the name of ?company with an extended social purpose?. Having experimented with the Camif, we realized that this model was rich, because it truly transforms the company. By including a purpose in the statutes, translating it into mission objectives, feeding a roadmap, and setting up dedicated governance. This is the most suitable system for a manager wishing to make his company contributory, and move from a CSR centered on commitments of responsibility, to a model of positive impact.

The implementing decrees for the PACTE law came out in 2020; we know that the transition to a mission-based company takes time for an organization. The path is long ; the definition of the raison d’être and that of the mission objectives can take 12 to 18 months to the company, because one questions for that the collaborators, the suppliers, the actors of the territory. The first companies with a mission appeared fairly quickly, but they were pioneers who were already well under way. But what we are seeing now is the wave of those who started their work 12 to 18 months ago, and the momentum is really there.

Can we speak of a trend for the future, in this particular period marked by the health crisis?

One would have thought that with the pandemic, companies have other, more pragmatic and short-term priorities. But we realize that the crisis has been an accelerator, beyond the PACTE law: it has accelerated the awareness of managers of the importance of making their companies more useful, and of being able to prove the usefulness of their organizations in the eyes of citizens, consumers, customers and their own employees.

The level of requirement also increased during the crisis; today, to attract young talent, retain the best in the company and gain customer loyalty, the company must be able to say how it contributes to the common good, and demonstrate its social, societal and environmental commitments. The desire to take action was favored by this particular period, while forced telework reinforced the need to clarify the meaning, the reason for being together. When returning to the office, many companies took the opportunity to reflect on this purpose, to bring teams together and get them thinking about what their organization could contribute.

The current dynamic affects all types of companies, of all sizes and in all sectors. Whether large organizations, SMEs, family companies, SSE structures, cooperatives, mutuals or listed companies. Whether they evolve in services, finance or industry. And every company has a role to play and to gain by clarifying its raison d’être. I am convinced that this is a powerful lever for transforming society, and that it is an opportunity for companies to take up current social, societal and environmental issues. They must assume their important role in this framework, take their responsibilities in their societal role, by defining their raison d’être and by getting actively involved.

What role should employees and managers play in companies with a mission, and those wishing to become one?

Within companies with a mission, employees have a decisive role to play. Because they often participate in the development of the raison d’être and the mission objectives, so as not to be disconnected from the practices of the company. And also because they implement and operationally translate the mission objectives. Unlike CSR, which can be a department of the company, the mission is at the heart of its practices, its economic model and its offer. It is up to managers to regularly remind them of the company’s mission, to grasp the roadmap and translate it into operational actions. The mission, well defined, simplifies their task, because it constitutes for them a compass to follow; but it is up to them to make the link between daily actions (operations) and the mission.

When the company is not yet a company with a mission, and the manager wants it to become one, there again, employees and managers have an important role. It should be emphasized that this process of transformation towards this model of positive impact can only come from the leader; but that he cannot initiate it alone. It is a collective project, and in most cases, a certain number of managers are mobilized; committed managers, who want to give meaning back to the company, and who will carry the approach (particularly within small extended groups, where they rub shoulders with experts, suppliers, HRDs and managers).

We also often see executives and managers who exert pressure, on their own, from within, for the company to transform itself into a company with a mission. They are called ?corporate activists?, or ?corporate hackers?. At Suez, for example, a small group of committed managers and employees has been formed and is calling for the transition to this mission-driven business model; that is, clarifying what all members of the organization do together and what they can have an impact on. They move their businesses from within, because they look for meaning in their work; until their leaders end up taking charge of the transformation process towards this new model.

?Our temp agency has a hundred permanent employees. I know them well. They come regularly. We exchange?, explains Philippe Pierre of the 5 Pierre agency in Limoges, initiator of the project.

?In addition, when we recruit, we have a form with a ?hobby? box. Thanks to this, it is easy to see that many people have other activities outside of work, other centers of interest, passions that they live in amateur practice or excellence. »

?The vitality of a company is not measured only by its turnover, the number of its employees. A strength also comes from these creative energies in the collaborators. So why not unite these energies? It is from this idea that the musical derby ?Entreprise en scène? was born.

From the first in 2014 to The ant, a place that disappeared on the banks of the Vienne in Limoges, the public was there. In this small room, 170 spectators acclaimed the groups. The success was renewed in 2015. That year, companies such as Photonis, Carsat, Weston, Eymin Leidier and of course the 5 Pierre took part.

Today, in times of covid where telework is too often imposed on those for whom it is possible, it is undoubtedly appropriate to propose a new musical derby. It will be able to contribute to finding the link, the dynamics, the joy of living, the party that this damn virus is depriving us of.

In a company, the initiative to form a group can come from employees, managers, the HR department. Companies from the 3 departments of Limousin can participate. All genres of current music are welcomed: rock, hip-hop, electro, etc.

The operation is created in partnership with Horizons Croisés and its Urban Empire festival. The groups will perform on a dedicated stage during this festival on the weekend of August 27 and 28. A predate may be organized in June or July at the John-Lennon cultural center in Limoges. An exceptional pass at 30 euros is reserved for the two days of Urban Empire for all employees of participating companies.

If you use Microsoft Teams daily as part of your work, you are aware that the application only allows you, in principle, to communicate with people inside your company. But things are changing.

Microsoft has just announced the relaxation of the operation of Teams in order to authorize communications with external third parties, even if they only have a personal user account.

This new feature, currently being rolled out, is completely transparent to users. To take advantage of this, simply initiate a new conversation in Teams, then enter the phone number or email address of the external party to start an external search. Once contacted, Teams will show (external) next to their name.

You can then chat with this person as you usually do with your colleagues, without changing anything in Teams. The conversation with this external user is directly integrated into the dedicated tab, in the middle of the other open discussions.

The function, which is supposed to facilitate the work of employees by allowing them to contact their customers more easily, could also allow Microsoft to recruit new users. Because when you invite a contact who does not have a Teams account to join a conversation, Microsoft will automatically send them an SMS or an e-mail inviting them to create a personal account on Teams.

With the arrival of this new feature, Microsoft could be preparing the ground to offer a universal version of Teams, which will clarify its offer. The Redmond firm currently offers two versions of its Teams application: one dedicated to users with a personal account (Communicate icon in the Windows 11 taskbar), the other reserved for professionals.

[content] => Array ( [encoded] =>

When last May the Nyiragongo volcano spat out a huge lava flow and shook the entire Lake Kivu region with its anger, KivuWatt engineers had to keep their cool despite “the fear”.

This plant, located in the middle of one of the great Rift lakes, between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), produces electricity from the immense quantities of gas trapped in the depths of Lake Kivu, which him a mortal threat to its residents.

Do not be fooled by the beauty of its green hills, plunging in strings into the calm and silent waters: Kivu is “a killer lake“, plants François Darchambeau, limnologist (scientist specializing in lakes) and environmental manager of KivuWatt.

The particular geology of the lake, in particular its depth and the surrounding volcanic activity, have led for thousands of years to a gigantic accumulation of methane and carbon dioxide under its surface.

The risk with this type of lake is to have an oversaturation of gas in the water and that this triggers what we call a limnic eruption.?, continues this Belgian expert, while showing AFP the plant.

That is, “a huge explosion of gas, from deep waters to the surface“, he adds, detailing a catastrophic and unpredictable scenario made of “waves, tsunamis” but, above all, of a toxic cloud of CO2.

Only three “killer lakes” exist in the world: Kivu and lakes Nyos and Monoun in northwest Cameroon, both of which experienced a limnic eruption in the 1980s, killing more than 1,700 people in this rural region.

But around Lake Kivu, a densely populated region, live 2 million people who will be “in danger” in the event of a serious limnic eruption, notes Mr. Darchambeau. On both sides of the border, fear has taken root among these residents and many popular stories describe the mysterious disappearances of swimmers, asphyxiated or sucked into the waters.

“Opportunity”

KivuWatt’s bet was to transform this diffuse threat into an “opportunity”, by pumping this gas to transform it into electricity. To access this unique power plant in the world, you have to climb into a speedboat, which in about twenty minutes takes you to the off-shore platform, a compact tangle of buoys and pipes, as high as a multi-storey building.

With a deafening noise, gas-saturated water is pumped there from about 350 meters below the surface (the depth of the lake reaches almost 500 meters). As it ascends, water and gas separate due to the change in pressure. “Like when you open a bottle of soda“, explains Priysham Nundah, director of KivuWatt, an installation, he points out, to “halfway between thermal power plant and renewable“.

On the one hand, the methane is sent via a pipeline to a second facility located on the shore, where it is transformed into electricity. The CO2 is reinjected into the lake, at a depth calculated so as not to risk destabilizing it.

By gradually removing the methane, which creates pressure in the lake – one of the factors that can trigger a limnic eruption – KivuWatt is also helping to reduce the threat.

“Centuries”

But last May, the fear of such a catastrophe was awakened when the Nyiragongo volcano, located north of the lake, erupted – another risk factor. A massive lava flow killed 32 people and charred hundreds of homes, then earthquakes rocked the entire region as a second lava flow ripped its way deep into the earth below the lake.

From their platform, the KivuWatt engineers could see the sky turning red around “the mountain”. “It was very scary“, says Priysham Nundah, the director: “When the level and frequency of the shaking started to rise (…) no one really knew what was going to happen.”

Faced with the danger, a stop was considered but ultimately did not take place. It would have had serious consequences for Rwanda: KivuWatt, with its 26 megawatts (MW) inaugurated in 2015, totals 30% of the energy consumed annually in the country, according to its figures.

ContourGlobal, its US parent company which operates power plants around the world, has paused a site expansion (to 100 MW) while another company is working on a 56 MW project. No central is expected in the short term on the Congolese side, according to information from AFP.

How long it will take KivuWatt, or others, to deplete this huge reserve of gas will depend on the rate of extraction, point out scientists, such as Martin Schmid, researcher at the Swiss Institute for Water and Aquatic Environments Research. (Eawag).

With only KivuWatt it will take, say, centuries to have a real reduction of methane in the lake?, believes this connoisseur of Kivu and its perils.

Fatigue, uncertainty, worry… the state of mind of business leaders is not really looking good at the start of 2022. The extension of the health crisis for more than two years, daily records contamination, the repeated waves plunged a large number of sectors into a thick fog. Added to this are supply difficulties, feverish energy and raw material prices.

According to the last Great consultation of entrepreneurs carried out by OpinionWay for CCI France, La Tribune, and LCI, the indicator that measures optimism inside companies lost 7 points between December and January to stand at 80, a level well below its long-term average (100).

It thus regains a level not seen since May 2021. After hovering around 100 between summer and November, this indicator continues to fall, having lost nearly 25 points since November. The appearance of the Omicron variant in South Africa and its spread throughout the Old Continent has clouded the outlook. Most economic institutes have revised their growth projections downwards in 2022. This week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the latest update of its projections expects tricolor GDP growth of 3.5% against 3.9% last fall.

60% of leaders encounter difficulties related to the wave of contamination

Of the entire panel questioned by the polling institute, six business leaders out of 10 expressed at least one difficulty and 4 out of 10 expressed several difficulties at the start of 2022.

Among the most frequently cited obstacles is first and foremost the introduction of compulsory telework three days a week for 56% of the companies surveyed. Then come absences related to contact cases (29%), supply difficulties (24%), cash flow problems (17%) or inventory management (11%). It must be said that the various waves of the pandemic have caused major disruptions between supply and demand in a large number of sectors since the spring of 2020.

On the other hand, staff management difficulties (8%) or recruitment problems (8%) appear at the bottom of the table. Of course, there can be strong disparities between sectors. The implementation of remote work, for example, reveals a spectacular gap between companies with 0 to 9 employees (57%) and those with more than 10 employees (34%).

Two-thirds of bosses oppose the sanctions announced by the government

Faced with recalcitrant companies in the application of health measures, the executive had decided a few weeks ago to toughen up the tone. Despite the reinforced government instructions, the telework did not make notable progress in early January, according to a recent interactive Harris poll for the Department of Labor.

During the week of January 3 to 9, among working people who could telecommute easily, 60% had thus telecommuted at least partially (58% in mid-December), the figures increasing more in Île-de-France (rising from 62% to 69%).

The government has since provided for sanctions for companies that do not play the game, with the bill transforming the health pass into a vaccination pass adopted by Parliament. The text provides for the possibility of administrative fines for companies that do not comply with health instructions, in particular with regard to teleworking. These fines may go up to 500 euros per employee, within the limit of 50,000 euros.

Teleworking: these sanctions (almost) impossible to apply for the government

Presidential: a lower proportion of leaders consider purchasing power and employment a priority

The contagiousness of the Omicron variant and health issues seem to take precedence over the economic and social themes of the presidential campaign. Less than 90 days before the first ballot, the proportion of business leaders who believe that purchasing power, employment and the environment has been declining since the fall. This dizzying decline shows thatdespite the approach of the ballot, the leaders show little hope in this regard” point out the authors of the barometer.
