For the European Union (EU), this has the value of a full-scale test. By seizing the World Trade Organization (WTO) against China, “because of its discriminatory practices against Lithuania, which also affect [le] EU single market », announced the Commission on Thursday 27 January, Brussels is putting the unity of the Twenty-Seven and the EU’s ability to impose itself on the international scene to the test.

In recent months, relations between Vilnius and Beijing have deteriorated. China did not appreciate that Lithuania left the “17+1” forum, this essential link of the New Silk Roads which brings together the Middle Kingdom and 17 countries of Central and Eastern Europe (including 12 Union members). She was frankly upset when the small Baltic state let Taiwan open an official representative office in its name on its soil, while Beijing does not recognize the state status of this island.

The retaliatory measures were not long in coming. On November 25, 2021, China announced that it was no longer issuing visas to Lithuanians. In the aftermath, it halted its imports to Lithuania, and it also stopped clearing Lithuanian goods arriving at its ports, citing flaws in its IT department. For Vilnius, the situation remained manageable: admittedly, its exports to China fell by 91% in December 2021 compared to the same month of the previous year, but Lithuania achieves less than 1% of its trade with Beijing.

“Value chains have been affected”

However, what was initially a bilateral affair between these two countries quickly became a community issue. Some Member States, particularly in Eastern Europe, “told themselves that what was happening to Lithuania could happen to them”, says a European official. What’s more, Beijing has not contented itself with putting obstacles in the way of Lithuanian companies. Without being given any explanation, several European manufacturers who use components from Lithuania have lost orders or have also been prevented from exporting to China.

“In Finland, Germany or Sweden, value chains have been affected”, continues this source. And the sacrosanct internal market has been disrupted. From then on, a country like Germany, which tended to consider that Vilnius could only blame itself in this story, began to see things differently. In this context, the Commission received unanimous support from the Twenty-Seven when it raised the possibility of taking the matter to the WTO, judging Beijing’s practices “discriminatory and illegal” under the rules of multilateral trade.

On January 1, the long-awaited meeting of the actors of the Harry Potter film saga was premiered, held on the occasion of his 20-year anniversary, Harry Potter 20 Aniversario: Regreso a Hogwarts (Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts).

The documentary, which can be seen on HBO Max streaming, was not without errors, which were quickly corrected after being noticed by fans.

However, there was one specific detail that fans kept questioning: Many theorized that Rupert Grint, who played Ronald “Ron” Weasley, was not actually present for the conversation with Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger).).

Let us remember that there are scenes in which Grint appears seated in some armchairs the Gryffindor Common Room with Radcliffe and Watson, but never interacts with them beyond words.

On the other hand, it also has a private meeting with emma watson, with whom they hold hands at one point, but Radcliffe is not present.

Both interviews not only have different settings, but also subtly change Grint’s outfit (a blue Beatle and a green sweater) and Watson has different rings and nail colors.

All of these details led fans to believe that Rupert was unable to meet in person for the trio’s reunion, but that Watson could have traveled to meet Grint for their couple’s interview.

bliss theory was confirmed by a member of the production team that recorded Rupert Grint, Caitlin Cronenberg, who recounted the experience in a post on Instagram A few days ago and it has just started to go viral.

“I was asked to shoot Rupert Grint, who was filming in Toronto, Canada and couldn’t get to London, England for the main shoot”, she said, along with a photograph of her with the actor, where the set can be seen from behind.

She adds that she’s a huge Harry Potter fan (in fact, she’s wearing a Ravenclaw sweatshirt) and that they went to great lengths to make the lighting in the place the same as it is in London.

Grint was in Canada recording the Netflix series, Cabinet of Curiosities.

So this is the reason for the lack of interaction between the trio of main actors.

All is not rosy in the world of French Tech. At a time when France and the government boast of counting, each week, a new « licorne » moreover, these start-ups worth more than 1 billion dollars (896 million euros), Sigfox, star of French technology in the mid-2010s, are in a bad way. The company specializing in networks for connected objects was placed, Wednesday, January 26, in receivership by the Commercial Court of Toulouse. Its debt amounts to 153 million euros, including 118 million in financial debt.

The six-month observation period granted by the court “should make it possible to identify, thanks to the implementation of a disposal plan, new buyers with the capacity to work for the long-term development of Sigfox, and to propose maintaining jobs”, explains the company in a press release. Based in Labège (Haute-Garonne), near Toulouse, Sigfox employs around 300 people, including 250 in France. The company would preferably target an industrial buyer, interested in its in-house technology.

Co-created in 2009 by Ludovic Le Moan and Christophe Fourtet, Sigfox was the initiator of a telecom network called “0G”. Its principle: low frequencies which make it possible to connect objects (transport pallets, measuring devices, etc.) with low energy and bandwidth consumption.

300 million euros raised in total

But Ludovic Le Moan wanted to hit hard: a global network, if not nothing, which required significant financial resources. Sigfox, which openly dreamed of going public, raised a total of nearly 300 million euros from renowned investors: Bpifrance, the European Investment Bank (EIB), Idinvest investment funds, Partech or Elliott.

Manufacturers have been seduced, such as Total, through its venture capital fund Total Energy Ventures, Intel or Horizon, the investment company of Henri Seydoux, founder of the drone manufacturer Parrot and son of Jérôme Seydoux ( Pathe). The company had also formed a prestigious board of directors, headed by Anne Lauvergeon, the former president of the Areva management board.

But it was not enough. While Sigfox has spent its money to build its network in France, Germany and the United States, supplemented by agreements with local partners in 75 countries, customers have not followed, not enough in any case to cover the operating costs.

The prosecution and defense concluded that they needed more time to complete the case, the judge revealed.

May 20, 2022 is the date proposed by the judge for a conference to decide how many days it will take to proceed with the extradition process. That will start to be judged from June 13.

The magistrate said that these are dates “agreed between the parties”.

The former president of the BPP will remain detained in Westville prison, in South Africa, where he returned at the end of this Thursday’s hearing, which lasted more than five hours.

Within three weeks, João Rendeiro’s defense will present a new request for a bond, which, if accepted, could allow the former banker to wait for the extradition process under house arrest. The first security proposed was around 2,200 euros.

However, the Portuguese authorities will send, until April 1, the legal documentation of the process, since the previous one arrived with the seal broken.

At the end of the session, the spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office revealed that the documents must return to Portugal.

For the first time, Rendeiro’s attorney June Marks was present in court.

“We hope to have copies of the documents back from Portugal on April 1,” Marks told reporters outside the courthouse before the judge’s decision.

“As a Portuguese citizen in South Africa, [João Rendeiro] You have every constitutional right to question everything. The law says South Africa cannot extradite him to Portugal unless he gets a fair trial.. I think the judgments [em Portugal] were unfair,” said June Marks.

The lawyer also added that she wants the process to be carried out using Internet diligence. However, he advanced that he intends to file a second request for release on bail – at the same time as he tries to appeal the first request -, probably in February.

“I want to get him out of there,” he summarized.

For May, he added, a period for choosing witnesses should be scheduled, including those from Portugal, with whom he intends to later claim in court that João Rendeiro was “unfairly” judged in absentia.

Taking into account the defense’s health conditions and previous complaints, the magistrate who directs the case admitted to transferring him to a cell where he was alone, but the former banker himself refused, preferring to be with people who speak Portuguese, told the lawyer, reiterating that she is in better health.

June Marks also said that the court was wrong to provisionally detain João Rendeiro, justifying that the European Convention on Extradition protects elderly and pregnant women, establishing that they should not be arrested, but without reference to age limits..

Rendeiro will turn 70 on May 22.

Seventh time in court

In the previous session, last Friday, a box with the extradition process sent by Portugal had been delivered to the court, containing two documents – one in Portuguese and the other in English.

However, the session was postponed to this Thursday because the tape that sealed the documents in Portuguese was broken. This is not the first time that these documents create complications in the process.

The lack of translators at the Prosecutor’s Office made it difficult to translate the thousands of pages in the case. Even so, it was possible to get all the documentation to South Africa before the deadline.

João Rendeiro’s lawyer denounced to the UN the conditions to which the former banker is subject in prison in South Africa. In the document to which RTP had access, the defense considered the situation a ticking time bomb and said that the former president of the BPP was the target of extortion attempts.

Detained two months ago

Detained on 11 December in the city of Durban, after almost three months on the run from Portuguese justice,
João Rendeiro was then presented to Judge Rajesh Parshotam, of the court in Verulam, who on December 17 decreed him the most severe measure of coercion, placing him in preventive detention in the Westville prison.

The former banker was convicted in three separate cases related to the collapse of the BPP, having been given as proven that he withdrew 13.61 million euros from the bank. Of the three convictions, only one has become final and does not admit any further appeals, with João Rendeiro having to serve an effective prison sentence of five years and eight months.

João Rendeiro was also sentenced to ten years in prison in a second case and a further three years and six months in a third, both of which have not yet become final.

The collapse of BPP, in 2010, injured thousands of customers and caused losses of hundreds of millions of euros to the State.

To continue SpaceX’s seemingly preferred pace of activity in 2022, several of the company’s Navy ships have been deployed to support two Falcon 9 launches scheduled later this week.

A fourth ship is likely to depart for a third Pacific launch later this week or early next week, a fifth ship will depart on another disguise recovery mission near the Bahamas, and a sixth SpaceX ship is sailing after salvage back to Florida’s east coast Dragon probe from the Gulf of Mexico. Had all three Falcon 9 launches scheduled for next week required a drone ship for booster recovery, almost all of SpaceX’s navy – eight out of nine SpaceX leased/owned vessels and up to two tugboats – would have been at sea at the same time Ce- Weekend.

Instead, the rare back-to-back alignment of two commercial missions, allowing SpaceX to perform Falcon 9 RTLS booster landings, requires the deployment of only one drone ship and up to six total ships over the next few days.

These approximately seven ships will simultaneously support four different salvage missions. GO Searcher recovered a SpaceX Cargo Dragon from the Gulf of Mexico on Jan. 24 and is en route back to Port Canaveral to drop the spacecraft for cargo removal, inspection and refurbishment. The seeker should arrive around Saturday or Sunday. On Jan 25, the SpaceX drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas departed Port Canaveral behind the tugboat Zion M Falgout and headed approximately 650 kilometers (~400 miles) southeast to recover a Falcon 9 booster carrying the Starlink 4- 7 is scheduled to launch as early as 3:00 p.m. EST (20:00 UTC) Saturday, January 29. Zion will likely serve as a support ship for SpaceX’s recovery crew.

two hours later, the support ship Bob left the same port, but was heading more or less due south, where it will carry the Falcon 9 payload fairing halves north of Cuba following the rocket’s scheduled launch at 18:11 EST (23:11 UTC) on Thursday, April 27 January, the Italian earth observation satellite CSG-2. Identical sister ship Doug will likely depart Port Canaveral on January 26th or 27th to recover the Starlink 4-7 fairing.

On the West Coast, the SpaceX ship NRC Quest or GO Quest is expected to depart Long Beach Harbor on January 30 or 31 to recover a third payload fairing after Falcon 9 captured the National NROL-87 spy satellite on February 2 Reconnaissance Office launched. . After launch of NROL-87, the Falcon 9 first stage rockets back to Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB) and lands on SpaceX’s Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4).

Meanwhile, SpaceX has up to four other Starlink missions — three from Florida and one from California — potentially scheduled for launch in February 2022.
