Leverkusen. With Viola Leuchter, another talent from the handball youth of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen received a Bundesliga contract.

For Leuchter, who will be 18 in June and do her Abitur this summer, the Bundesliga contract from the 2022/23 season is another milestone in continuous development under the Bayer cross.

The left-hander from Würselen came to Leverkusen from BTB Aachen in 2019 and quickly developed into a top performer with the junior elves in the A youth Bundesliga and in the 3rd division.

Last season, the 1.85-metre-tall backcourt player won both the German runners-up title in the A-Jugend and the silver medal with the U17 national team at the European Championships in Montenegro. In addition, the junior elf was voted into the tournament’s all-star team for having the best backcourt rights and also won the top scorer’s crown with 55 goals.

In October 2021, Leuchter was appointed to the new elite squad of the German Handball Association in order to receive a special support program from the association.

The talented high school student made her Bundesliga debut at home against Buxtehuder SV and scored her first three Bundesliga goals for the Werkself. Last weekend she was in the Bundesliga squad against Buchholz-Rosengarten and contributed a goal to the 33:22 home win.

“Viola is one of the game-determining players in both the youth Bundesliga and the 3rd division and has shown in her previous appearances with the Werkself that she can already perform well in the Bundesliga. We are happy to have Viola, another player from the region, in our squad,” says Handball Managing Director Renate Wolf. “We will continue to build her up carefully and I am convinced that she will develop into a top performer in the Bundesliga.”

“The Bundesliga contract is something special for me and I’m happy that it worked. It’s fun to play in this family club and in this team, which has welcomed me very well. It has been a very special year of my life so far and a confirmation of the hard work on and off the pitch,” said Leuchter happily.

Yesterday, I published here on the blog the article about the new spectacular images made of the center of the Milky Way by the MeerKAT telescope. This image is so detailed and so spectacular that each part of it can be analyzed separately. One of these parts is related to the filaments found at the center of the galaxy.

An unprecedented new telescope image of the Milky Way’s turbulent center has revealed nearly 1,000 mysterious strands, inexplicably dangling in space.

Extending up to 150 light-years in length, the one-dimensional strands (or filaments) are found in pairs and clusters, often stacked evenly spaced, side by side like strings on a harp. Using observations at radio wavelengths, Farhad Yusef-Zadeh of Northwestern University discovered highly organized magnetic filaments in the early 1980s. The mysterious filaments comprise cosmic ray electrons spinning in the magnetic field at close to the speed of light. But its origin has remained an unsolved mystery ever since.

Now, the new image has exposed 10 times more filaments than previously discovered, allowing Yusef-Zadeh and her team to conduct statistical studies on a broad population of filaments for the first time. This information could potentially help them finally unravel the long-standing mystery.

The study is now available online and has been accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

“We’ve studied individual filaments for a long time with a myopic view,” said Yusef-Zadeh, the paper’s lead author. “Now, we finally see the big picture – a bird’s-eye view filled with an abundance of filaments. Just examining a few strands makes it difficult to draw any real conclusions about what they are and where they came from. This is a game-changer for furthering our understanding of these structures.”

Yusef-Zadeh is a professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA).

To build the image with unprecedented clarity and detail, astronomers spent three years surveying the sky and analyzing data at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). Using 200 hours on SARAO’s MeerKAT telescope, the researchers assembled a mosaic of 20 separate observations of different sections of the sky towards the center of the Milky Way, 25,000 light-years from Earth.

The full image can be found in yesterday’s post here on the blog – https://spacetoday.com.br/novas-imagens-de-radio-revelam-o-coracao-da-via-lactea/. Along with the filaments, the image captures radio emissions from various phenomena, including erupting stars, stellar nurseries and new supernova remnants.

“I spent a lot of time looking at this image in the process of working on it and I never get tired of it,” Heywood said. “When I show this image to people who may be new to radio astronomy, or unfamiliar with it, I always try to emphasize that the radio image was not always like this, and what a leap forward MeerKAT really is in terms of its It is a real privilege to work over the years with colleagues at SARAO who have built this fantastic telescope.”

To visualize the filaments at a finer scale, Yusef-Zadeh’s team used a technique to remove the background from the main image in order to isolate the filaments from surrounding structures. The resulting image surprised him.

“It’s like modern art,” he said. “These images are so beautiful and rich, and the mystery of it all makes it even more interesting.”

While many mysteries surrounding the filaments remain, Yusef-Zadeh has managed to piece together more pieces of the puzzle. In his latest paper, he and his collaborators specifically explored the magnetic fields of filaments and the role of cosmic rays in illuminating magnetic fields.

The variation in radiation emitted by the filaments is very different from that of the newly discovered supernova remnant, suggesting that the phenomena have different origins. It is more likely, the researchers found, that the filaments are related to past activity of the Milky Way’s central supermassive black hole, rather than coordinated supernova explosions. The filaments could also be related to huge radio-emitting bubbles, which Yusef-Zadeh and colleagues discovered in 2019.

And while Yusef-Zadeh already knew that filaments are magnetized, he can now say that magnetic fields are amplified along the filaments, a primary characteristic that all filaments share.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to study the statistical characteristics of the filaments,” he said. “By studying the statistics, we can learn more about the properties of these unusual sources.

“If you were from another planet, for example, and you found a very tall person on Earth, you would assume that all people are tall. But if you do statistics on a population of people, you can find the average height. This is exactly how we can find the strength of magnetic fields, their lengths, their orientations and the spectrum of radiation.”

Among the remaining mysteries, Yusef-Zadeh is particularly intrigued by how the filaments are structured. The filaments within the clusters are separated from each other by perfectly equal distances – roughly the distance from the Earth to the Sun.

“They almost resemble regular spacing in solar loops,” he said. “We still don’t know why they come in groups or understand how they separate, and we don’t know how these regular spacings happen. Every time we answer one question, several more come up.”

Yusef-Zadeh and his team also don’t know whether the filaments move or change over time or what is causing electrons to accelerate at such incredible speeds.

“How do you accelerate electrons close to the speed of light?” he asked. “One idea is that there are some sources at the end of these filaments that are accelerating these particles.”

Yusef-Zadeh and his team are currently identifying and cataloging each strand. The angle, curve, magnetic field, spectrum and intensity of each filament will be published in a future study. Understanding these properties will give the astrophysical community more clues about the elusive nature of filaments.

The MeerKAT telescope, launched in July 2018, will continue to reveal new secrets.

“We are certainly one step closer to a more complete understanding,” said Yusef-Zadeh. “But science is a series of progress at different levels. We hope to get to the bottom of this, but more observations and theoretical analysis are needed. A complete understanding of complex objects takes time.”

It is sometimes necessary to dial their number more than ten times before finally hearing their voices. Chopped. Deaf. Distant. On January 15, when the violent eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano caused a tsunami on the Tonga Islands, the submarine cable connecting the Polynesian archipelago to the rest of the world was damaged, instantly interrupting all telephone communications and Internet. After five days of almost total silence, the operator Digicel was able to partially restore its telephone network. Since then, connections have remained fragile and erratic, but they allow more and more Tongans to bear witness to the drama they have experienced.

All their stories begin with the terrifying sound of explosions. “There were several, growing louder and louder, to the point of leaving us half deaf, says Marian Kupu, journalist. We immediately understood that something serious was happening, that we had to run, take shelter. » Outside, rolls are already forming on the ocean, which suddenly changes its appearance. The young woman, who lives in a village on the seafront a few kilometers from the capital, Nuku’alofa, jumps into a car to get away from the coast as quickly as possible with her family. Like her, a whole country is moving inland in a gigantic traffic jam.

Polluted water, destroyed crops

“That’s when the sky turned black and it started to rain. Not water, but ashes, pebbles. It was apocalyptic. We couldn’t see anything through our windshield.” says in turn Tulutulu Mafuaiolotele, a former policeman. With his wife, his son, his cousins, nephews and nieces, he manages to find refuge with his in-laws. There, without electricity, without a telephone, he clings like a lifeline to the 90FM radio, which will never stop broadcasting. “This is the only information that reached us. Luckily they were there. They are the ones who immediately warned us of the risk of a tsunami. » At the seaside, not everyone had time to flee. Some had no choice but to climb trees to escape the waves that reached up to 15 meters high. Miraculously, there were only three deaths.

“We didn’t immediately realize the extent of the damage. It wasn’t until two days later, when we finally decided to go home, that we realized. Everything was covered in a thick mantle of ash, even the animals. Above all, the landscape was upside down: there were electric poles on the ground, uprooted coconut trees, houses on the wrong side of the road. Since then, we spend our time cleaning up,” testifies again Marian Kupu, who, for more than twenty-four hours, remained caulked at her brother-in-law’s house, not daring to go out, terrified at the idea of inhaling this gray rain which never stopped falling.

As the tournament reminds us, Africa is a continent in its own right. It has its rituals (the CAN is one of them), its institutions, such as the African Union and, even more, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), which has played a leading role in the management of the pandemic, and its own development projects. Among these, let us mention the African Continental Free Trade Area (Zlecaf), this ambitious project which aims to set up a vast common market.

Africa is a continent, not a country. It may seem incongruous to recall it, yet this aggregate of 54 nations is still too often referred to as a uniform whole. Africa Is Not a Country is precisely the title of a book to be published in April in the United Kingdom and classified among the recommended readings for 2022 by the Financial Times. Under the pen of Dipo Faloyin – this Chicago-born journalist who grew up in Nigeria and lives in London – the essay aims to break stereotypes about a region “often simplistically described as a red, arid land, home only to safaris and famines”, according to the presentation note.

What about expressions such as “the African city” or “the African consumer”? Is it relevant to want to compare the socio-economic evolution of the continent with that of India or China? Should we devote a cultural season to Africa, as Emmanuel Macron did with Africa2020, when this type of event generally focuses on a single country?

Various situations and needs

Africa, let us remember, extends over an immense territory: as large as the United States, Mexico, China, Japan, India and a good part of the European countries combined. Africa is above all plural: genetic diversity is greater there than on any other continent. At least 2,000 different languages are spoken there. As for the ecosystems, far from being only made up of savannahs and deserts, they also include tropical forests, mountain ranges, large lakes, islands…

By this yardstick, certain phenomena do not fail to astonish. Like when, in 2014, the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and Guinea caused a drop in tourism in Tanzania. Would we give up a trip to India because there is a stir in South Korea?

Some may still not know Olivia de Havilland Y Joan Fontaine They were sisters… and ill-advised. The famous actresses never got along, they never worked together and they did not hesitate to air their disagreements in public. Their enmity was no secret. It came a long way, from his earliest childhood, and it became more acute with the passage of time, fiercely competing on and off the big screen. They hated each other to death.

Undoubtedly, their terrible brotherly relationship could well have shaped a script of those that take out the dirty laundry of anyone exposing them to the avid viewer of morbidity. It was even said that the text of What happened to Baby Jane?, a film starring bitter enemies Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, was inspired by them.

There she remarried a businessman named George Milan Fontaine, and became obsessed with making young women successful in the movies.

As children they already fought and had strong arguments. Once, sweet Olivia broke her little sister’s collarbone.

Despite the record-breaking, worldwide takeover that Spider-Man: No Way Home is, Holland alluded to having “the next lucky young kid come in.”

Here is the full quote from Deadline:

“This film for me was as special as an experience could ever be. Sharing the screen with these guys. Playing Spider-Man could be quite an alienating experience because, you know, we’re the only three blokes who have done it. So, to share that with you two, it’s been such a wonderful experience, of which I have such amazing memories. I don’t know, there’s part of me that feels like it’s the perfect time to jump off the building and swing off into the sunset and let the next lucky young kid come in to don the suit, or I might, I don’t know, buy a new house and need a paycheck and I’ll be back.”

Holland also stated that No Way Home was “potentially the last time I don that suit,” fueling his emotions for the heavy story that he masterfully upheld with his fellow cast.

Much like Star Wars (and now Marvel) alum, Oscar Isaac stated, Tom Holland would return to the Spider-Man role if he wanted to buy another house. Of course, this is a quick joke from the Uncharted (2022) star, but it makes fans worried that Holland is thinking about retiring his Marvel run sooner rather than later.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding with the Multiverse, and Spider-Man: No Way Home just opened the door for a decade of future Marvel movies, series, and more.

Leading the way for future Marvel characters to join the MCU, Tom Holland has a huge responsibility on his shoulders. Still, the actor just revealed to Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and more in a recent interview that he’s uncertain about remaining as the current Spider-Man, alluding to a new actor taking over the superhero role:

“There’s part of me that feels like it’s the perfect time to jump off the building and swing off into the sunset and let the next lucky young kid come in…”

LeBron James’ 110 million Instagram followers were delighted after the Los Angeles Lakers superstar used a hilarious quote from Spider-Man: Homecoming as the caption for his most recent post.

Receiving more than 1.2 million likes in just four hours, James posted a photo of himself and Lakers teammate Austin Reaves, along with a photo of Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland playing Tony Stark and Peter Parker in the 2017 Marvel movie.

In the photo with Reaves, the Lakers rookie appears confused as James addresses him during Los Angeles’ recent 106-96 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. James, widely respected as one of the most intelligent basketball players of all time, was likely explaining a defensive scheme to the Lakers rookie.

While Downey Jr. and Holland were not responsible for guarding the pick-and-roll in Spiderman: Homecoming, their Iron Man and Spider-Man characters shared a moment similar to the one depicted in James’ post.

As the veteran superhero welcomed the newly-appointed webslinger to the Avengers ranks, Stark explained to Parker that he operates by a different set of rules and offered a quote memorized by Marvel fans.

“Don’t do anything I would do. And definitely don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” Stark told Parker. “There’s a little gray area in there and that’s where you operate.”

Using the same quote as the caption for his viral Instagram post, James acknowledged parallels between he, Reaves and their fictional counterparts.

However, where Stark and Parker easily morph into superheroes with other-worldly powers and abilities, the 2021-22 Los Angeles Lakers have not been able to find the same chemistry that propelled them to an NBA Finals victory in 2020.

While the 37-year-old James continues to play at an elite level, averaging 29.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists per game, Los Angeles’ supporting cast has struggled.

Fellow Lakers star Anthony Davis made his first appearance against Brooklyn after missing two months with a knee injury, while former league MVP Russell Westbrook continues to adapt to his third team in as many years.

Recently passing their season’s halfway point, Los Angeles sits at 24-24, good for ninth place in the NBA’s Western Conference.

Despite the Lakers’ struggles and speculation surrounding the NBA’s upcoming trade deadline, James’ Instagram post provided a moment of levity for fans and followers alike.

Amid a sea of crying-laughing emojis from Reaves, three-time Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn and first-year Laker Carmelo Anthony, many fans dubbed James “LeTonyStark,” while former teammate and current NBA analyst Channing Frye pointed out that the Instagram caption is more complimentary than it appears.

“Deep Marvel reference,” Frye commented. “Unknowing that in the Marvel Comic Universe, Spider-Man is stronger and smarter than Iron Man.”

“Big compliment @austinreaves12,” he added.

Olympics under tension. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday (January 27th) urged the United States to “stop disturbing” the Beijing Winter Olympics, during a call with his American counterpart Antony Blinken. China will hold an Olympic Games from Feb. 4 to 20 where it hopes to show off its ability to stage a big event amid the pandemic and its athletes’ progress in winter sports.

But Western pressure, especially American, has increased in recent months on Beijing, accused of violating the rights of the Chinese ethnic minority of Uyghurs as part of its fight against terrorism. The United States has notably announced a “diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing Olympics, that is to say that they will not send, at least not officially, diplomatic representatives to the event. Washington convinced several Western allies to do the same.

“The top priority right now is for the United States to stop disrupting the Beijing Winter Olympics,” launched Wang Yi to Antony Blinken, according to a press release from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Chinese official also called on Washington to “stop playing with fire” on the issue of Taiwan or “create all kinds of small factions to oppose China”.

China takes a dim view of the strengthening of ties between the United States and Taiwan. Chinese planes have increased aerial incursions into the island’s defense identification zone in recent months.

After a pretty intense bidding war, New Republic Pictures has come out on top with heist thriller Cut and Run. The film is set to star Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home, Source Code) assumedly as the ring leader of a group of thieves who spend their time stealing from super-yachts and escaping on high-powered speed boats. Yes, you read that correctly, super-yachts and speed boats. On top of starring in the film, Gyllenhaal is also producing Cut and Run at his company Nine Stories Productions.

John Glenn, whose previous credits include Eagle Eye, Law Abiding Citizen, and the television series SEAL Team, is writing the script as well as producing. Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer at New Republic Pictures will also serve as producers for Cut and Run. This kind of movie fits right in with Glenn’s previous work, and from the description it sounds like it will be an absolute hit for anyone who loves a good popcorn action film. Glenn is also currently working on adapting The House On Hoarder Hill with Sam Raimi and Wiip Studios.

New Republic recently signed a first look deal with Nine Stories, making this collaboration a natural next step. The production company also has Michael Bay‘s Ambulance coming later this year on April 8, which also stars Gyllenhaal alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Matrix Resurrections, Aquaman), and Eiza González (Baby Driver). New Republic and Nine Stories also have plans to produce Oblivion Song, a film based on the graphic novel of the same title by Lorenzo De Felici and Robert Kirkman.

Gyllenhaal was also recently in talks to star in a Road House reboot at MGM, however, news on that project is still mostly speculation. Though Gyllenhaal faced a fresh wave of internet backlash after the release of Red (Taylor’s Version) late last year, including a short film based on their relationship, his ability to tackle the most ridiculous action flicks remains intact. Cut and Run appears to have a similar energy to Ambulance and in that they’re both high-speed films designed to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat with near-nonstop action. Gyllenhaal is set to star in several upcoming projects including The Interpreter which is currently filming and The Division, Suddenly and Prophet which are all in preproduction.

Though there’s no further information about Cut and Run available yet, including additional cast or a release date, we might be able to expect the film sometime next year.
