On a subject that the majority of business leaders and stakeholders consider essential but on which it often remains difficult to measure the impact of concrete actions, that of corporate social responsibility (CSR), the recent study published by the Business Mediator and the EcoVadis rating platform bear witness to the remarkable performance of French businesses.

Based on more than 80,000 assessments and specific measures concerning social issues, ethics, the prevention of corruption or respect for the environment, the authors rank French companies in third position, just behind the Sweden and Finland, and well ahead of their German or American counterparts.

The role of the legal framework

The overall score of 54.3/100 obtained by French companies also allows them to reach a level qualified as “adapted” (four levels being defined to qualify the quality of the CSR management system: “exemplary”, “adapted “, “incomplete” and “intangible”).

In detail, the study offers a detailed view of performance on various major themes: environment, social, ethics and, specific to this survey, responsible purchasing. French companies, of all sizes, thus rank first on the “social” theme, covering human resources and human rights issues.

They appear at 8e rank on the theme of “ethics”, covering corruption, anti-competitive practices and information management. It is moreover on this theme that French companies have recorded the strongest growth over 6 years. They appear at 5e rank on the theme of the environment and at 3e rank on that of responsible purchasing.

Business Ombudsman/EcoVadis (2021)

On a global scale, we see the importance of the regulatory framework on this last criterion of responsible purchasing. In fact, only half of the SMEs/ETIs, not concerned by the legal duty of care, have implemented concrete actions to make more responsible purchases.

On the other hand, 87% of the large companies assessed, of course concerned by this duty of care, have implemented such policies. French companies are therefore probably reaping here the benefits of a restrictive framework that it is now important to overcome in order to transform the constraints into real opportunities.

It is also very enlightening to note that the most advanced companies in terms of responsible purchasing are also those that appear to be the most advanced in the other CSR themes. If the main causal link is indeed that of a general level of maturity in terms of CSR, responsible purchasing now seems to be an excellent relay for spreading responsibility. We had also shown in our research that responsible purchasing was an important source of sustainable value creation.

Progress levers

However, responsible purchasing still remains without doubt the theme on which the most concrete and significant progress can be made (since we are starting from a relatively long distance). They are also a great vehicle for disseminating responsible practices among suppliers and the entire ecosystem. This is also true internally, when responsible purchasing promotes progress in human resources management or the use of physical resources for greater sobriety.

One of the lessons of the study lies in the observation that performance in terms of responsible purchasing appears to be consistent with performance in the other dimensions of CSR (environment, social/human rights and ethics). However, advances in responsible purchasing appear to come after progress on other themes.

Progression of the rating of French companies on the “responsible purchasing” criterion.
Business Ombudsman/EcoVadis (2021)

In other words, responsible purchasing progresses when the company that implements it is already mature on the other dimensions of CSR. The opposite, namely progress recorded on the other dimensions of CSR following gains in the maturity of responsible purchasing, is on the other hand almost never observed.

So far, the other dimensions of CSR seem to have “pulled” responsible purchasing practices upwards, demonstrating certain beneficial effects of the necessary consistency between internal and external practices. The level of performance achieved by companies on the four dimensions observed today seems to plead for a takeover, through responsible purchasing, in the dissemination of good practices, from the external to the internal so henceforth.

The relatively low maturity of responsible purchasing compared to the other dimensions of CSR therefore offers companies many levers for progress, which, if activated, would contribute to further improving the maturity of the other three dimensions, more traditionally assessed.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission is finally available in theaters! A third film which is a continuation of the series, but do you necessarily have to have seen the other two feature films in the saga to understand this one?

My Hero Academia has not finished making people talk! Despite the final arc announced for 2022, Kōhei Horikoshi’s work continues to rise in the race for the best manga of the new generation. And after a very effective season 5, the phenomenon continues in the cinema with the film World Heroes’ Mission.

Released this Wednesday, January 26 in French cinemas, this project follows two feature films respectively released in Japan in 2018 and 2019: Two Heroes and Heroes Rising. But then do you have to have seen them to understand the challenges of this new opus?

World Heroes’ Mission opens with U.A. students dispatched to the four corners of the world to intervene in a case of terrorism. Humanise, a group of individuals who are convinced that the Quirks will be the cause of the end of the world, lay out several bombs aimed at eradicating the 80% of the population possessing power.

Inscribed in the heart of season 5, chronologically speaking, this film therefore takes place months after the events of these two predecessors. However, it is not necessary to have seen them to understand (and like) this third part.

My Hero Academia The Movie Project / K. Horikoshi / Shueisha

Film 1 : Two Heroes / Film 2 : Heroes Rising

Although very popular with the public (currently the three films have brought together nearly 93 million euros in box office receipts), none is really canon. To explain, this means that the facts related in Two Heroes, Heroes Rising and World Heroes’ Mission are only material added to the basic work and whose veracity is unverifiable, since the official work never does. citation.

Independent of each other, the three films can be seen randomly, without creating any misunderstanding in the viewer. However, they cannot be dissociated from the original work of Kōhei Horikoshi. It is therefore imperative to have at least read the manga or seen the animated adaptation to understand the themes raised by the film, which does not bother to go into detail on the rules of its universe.

As a perfect bonus, World Heroes’ Mission is therefore more aimed at fans of the saga, assiduous readers or spectators eager for additional adventures. And for those who prefer the authentic and the indisputable, you can perfectly continue your discovery of the work without being forced to watch the films to understand it.

As a reminder, the anime is available on DNA and Crunchyroll platforms. The manga, meanwhile, is published by Ki-oon editions.

Management

, through Thomas Porez

Two years after the PACTE law, companies with a mission are developing. Can we speak of a basic trend? Has the health crisis had an impact? What role can employees and managers play in this context? The analysis of Emery Jacquillat, president of the Business Community at Mission and CEO of Camif.

Where are the companies with a mission?

We passed the bar of 500 companies with a mission, at the beginning of 2022. This is a very good dynamic: it is four times more than last year, at the same period. Bearing in mind that in the USA, the “benefit corporations”, which have existed for more than 10 years, do not exceed the number of 500, and that in Italy, the “società benefit”, which have existed for 5 years, number 1,500. In France, we should exceed 2,022 companies with a mission by 2023.

The Community of Businesses with a Mission was created in 2018, before the PACTE law (which dates from 2019), by a small group of business leaders who had experimented with this model, and researchers who had theorized it under the name of “company with an extended social purpose”. Having experimented with the Camif, we realized that this model was rich, because it truly transforms the company. By including a purpose in the statutes, translating it into mission objectives, feeding a roadmap, and setting up dedicated governance. This is the most suitable system for a manager wishing to make his company contributory, and move from a CSR centered on commitments of responsibility, to a model of positive impact.

The implementing decrees for the PACTE law came out in 2020; we know that the transition to a mission-based company takes time for an organization. The path is long ; the definition of the raison d’être and that of the mission objectives can take 12 to 18 months to the company, because one questions for that the collaborators, the suppliers, the actors of the territory. The first companies with a mission appeared fairly quickly, but they were pioneers who were already well under way. But what we are seeing now is the wave of those who started their work 12 to 18 months ago, and the momentum is really there.

Can we speak of a trend for the future, in this particular period marked by the health crisis?

One would have thought that with the pandemic, companies have other, more pragmatic and short-term priorities. But we realize that the crisis has been an accelerator, beyond the PACTE law: it has accelerated the awareness of managers of the importance of making their companies more useful, and of being able to prove the usefulness of their organizations in the eyes of citizens, consumers, customers and their own employees.

The level of requirement also increased during the crisis; today, to attract young talent, retain the best in the company and gain customer loyalty, the company must be able to say how it contributes to the common good, and demonstrate its social, societal and environmental commitments. The desire to take action was favored by this particular period, while forced telework reinforced the need to clarify the meaning, the reason for being together. When returning to the office, many companies took the opportunity to reflect on this purpose, to bring teams together and get them thinking about what their organization could contribute.

The current dynamic affects all types of companies, of all sizes and in all sectors. Whether large organizations, SMEs, family companies, SSE structures, cooperatives, mutuals or listed companies. Whether they evolve in services, finance or industry. And every company has a role to play and to gain by clarifying its raison d’être. I am convinced that this is a powerful lever for transforming society, and that it is an opportunity for companies to take up current social, societal and environmental issues. They must assume their important role in this framework, take their responsibilities in their societal role, by defining their raison d’être and by getting actively involved.

What role should employees and managers play in companies with a mission, and those wishing to become one?

Within companies with a mission, employees have a decisive role to play. Because they often participate in the development of the raison d’être and the mission objectives, so as not to be disconnected from the practices of the company. And also because they implement and operationally translate the mission objectives. Unlike CSR, which can be a department of the company, the mission is at the heart of its practices, its economic model and its offer. It is up to managers to regularly remind them of the company’s mission, to grasp the roadmap and translate it into operational actions. The mission, well defined, simplifies their task, because it constitutes for them a compass to follow; but it is up to them to make the link between daily actions (operations) and the mission.

When the company is not yet a company with a mission, and the manager wants it to become one, there again, employees and managers have an important role. It should be emphasized that this process of transformation towards this model of positive impact can only come from the leader; but that he cannot initiate it alone. It is a collective project, and in most cases, a certain number of managers are mobilized; committed managers, who want to give meaning back to the company, and who will carry the approach (particularly within small extended groups, where they rub shoulders with experts, suppliers, HRDs and managers).

We also often see executives and managers who exert pressure, on their own, from within, for the company to transform itself into a company with a mission. They are called “corporate activists”, or “corporate hackers”. At Suez, for example, a small group of committed managers and employees has been formed and is calling for the transition to this mission-driven business model; that is, clarifying what all members of the organization do together and what they can have an impact on. They move their businesses from within, because they look for meaning in their work; until their leaders end up taking charge of the transformation process towards this new model.

Pierre Niney and Gilles Lellouche, both nominated for the César for best actor, carried each other on social networks.

In competition for the César for best actor, Pierre Niney and Gilles Lellouche gently teased each other on social networks. The actor named for “Bac Nord” started this little squabble by sending a tweet, saying he was “exceptional” and that he was going to “crush Pierre Ninay (sic) who is good but not great”. “It falls like hot cakes”, he wrote to accompany his message intended for the actor of “Black Box”.

“But hahaha”, “you created a Twitter account”, “congratulations for your age”, replied Pierre Niney who hastened to dedicate his Instagram “story” to him. The 32-year-old actor then published a photo of him, with the caption: “Being nominated for the César this year: very cool”. Then “but knowing that my brother François Civil, with whom we have dreamed of this profession for almost 15 years, will also be there = small emotion”, he writes on an old photo of the duo. He continued: “Unlike this asshole Gilles Lellouche which we would have done well without”, by publishing the screenshot of their first exchanges. “War is declared. Humility and benevolence will be the key words of this fight”, then declared Pierre Niney.

It’s time for diplomacy. French, German, Russian and Ukrainian advisers met in Paris on Wednesday January 26 to find a way out of the crisis between Moscow and Kiev. Meanwhile, on the ground, soldiers are mobilized.

The Kremlin is accused of sending tens of thousands of troops to the Ukrainian border and Washington expects Russia to be able to do so “use of military force” against Ukraine in one way or another, “may be” by mid-February, according to US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. For its part, NATO has strengthened its presence in the region since Russia annexed Crimea. This is, moreover, one of the sensitive points of Moscow, which is calling for the freezing of enlargementOrganization of the North Atlantic Treaty in Europe, with in the first place the rejection of Ukraine’s membership.

Russian troops on the border and in Belarus

While eastern Ukraine has been experiencing a latent conflict since 2014, on the other side of the border, the Russian army is strengthening its positions. This unprecedented deployment of force has been documented for several months, in particular thanks to the analysis of dozens of amateur or satellite images. Artillery, armored vehicles, tanks, tank trucks… Dozens of rail convoys are observed. Equipment that reinforces existing or newly established Russian bases, as shown on our map.

Last December, American intelligence services estimated that 100,000 Russian soldiers had gathered near the border and in Crimea. According to a monitoring carried out by Rochan Consulting, a company of analysis in the military field, there are 17 permanent Russian military bases near the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders, and seven camps where new units have settled.

Since the beginning of January, similar movements have also been observed in Belarus, an ally of Moscow. On January 18, the Belarusian Ministry of Defense announced that Russian troops would arrive in February for training exercises. “combat readiness”. “The upcoming operational readiness and combat exercises are taking place due to the worsening of the politico-military situation in the world, the continuous increase of tensions in Europe, in particular on the western and southern borders of Belarus”, explained Minsk.

Nonetheless, thehe head of Ukrainian diplomacy, Dmytro Kouleba, estimated on Wednesday that the Russian troops gathered at the Ukrainian border were still “insufficient” to launch a major attack on his country. This number “is important, it poses a threat to Ukraine”, most “as we speak, this number is insufficient for a full-scale offensive against Ukraine along the entire Ukrainian border”, did he declare.

NATO soldiers around Ukraine

L’Otan, political and military alliance, today has 30 member states, including several countries bordering Ukraine: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Cooperation between the Alliance and Kyiv, one of its partners, “intensified” in 2014, “consequence of the crisis which broke out between Russia and Ukraine”, notes the organization. For NATO, “un sovereign, independent and stable Ukraine, firmly committed to democracy and the rule of law, is essential to Euro-Atlantic security”.

These last years, “in response to Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014”, l’Otan “has strengthened its presence in the eastern part of Alliance territory, in particular by deploying four multinational battle groups there”, in the Baltic countries as well as in Poland. These groups include “multinational forces foperating on the principle of rotation and ready for combat“, specifies the organization, which recalls the absence of Alliance forces in the member states of Eastern Europe before 2014.

As shown in this interactive NATO map, these groups are located in Rukla (Lithuania), Adazi (Latvia), Tapa (Estonia) and Orzysz (Poland). The Baltic countries also have NATO force integration units, whose mission is “to contribute to the training of national troops and to facilitate the rapid deployment of allied forces if necessary”. These are located in Vilnius (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia) and Tallinn (Estonia).

NATO has also developed its presence in south-eastern Europe, with “a multinational brigade” in Craiova, Romania. In this country sharing part of its border with Ukraine, NATO is also present through the air base of Deveselu (Romania), which includes an anti-missile defense system. It also has a NATO force integration unit in Bucharest. Another unit of this type is located in Székesfehérvár, in Hungary, also neighboring Ukraine. NATO has also reinforced its maritime and air presence in the Black Sea region.

Reinforcements sent to southeastern Europe

The Atlantic Alliance announced on Monday that several of its member states would send military reinforcements to Eastern Europe. This is, explains NATO, “to strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defense posture, while Russia continues to strengthen its military posture in and around Ukraine”.

Denmark has thus planned to send a frigate to the Baltic Sea, as well as four F-16 fighters to Lithuanian territory, “in support of the sky police mission” of the Alliance. Madrid must in turn send several ships “who will join the NATO naval forces” and could launch the dispatch of fighters to Bulgaria. The Netherlands will also send two F-35 fighters there from April, while offering “a ship and land units in a state of readiness”, for the Atlantic Alliance reaction force.

The United States for its part placed on alert Monday some 8,500 soldiers, who could swell the ranks of the NATO reaction force which has 40,000 soldiers. The decision to deploy them has not yet been taken, but a delivery of military equipment and ammunition has already been sent to Kiev by plane. France, for its part, said to itself “ready to send troops to Romania“under NATO command.
