A horror film without howls to twist the eardrums of the spectators would it really be one? American actress Ashley Peldon confided in her funny profession to The Guardian: voice dubber.

“If I see an insect, I howl. When something scares or jumps me, I scream. It’s like that, it comes naturally. This propensity to give voice was decisive in getting my first job as an actress. »

This is how actress Ashley Peldon describes herself, in the columns of The Guardian, on April 8th. You don’t know it, but you have certainly heard it in Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (William Eubank, 2021), Free Guy (Shawn Levy, 2021) or even Scream (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, 2022). The American actress is a funny “stunt girl” as she characterizes herself: she intervenes during post-production, during dubbing and she is paid… To scream in horror films! She dubs the scenes that could be dangerous for the voices of the actors or that they are unable to interpret.

As a child, Ashley dreamed of being an actress. She grew up in New York in the 1980s where she and her sister were spotted very young by professionals on the big screen. At the age of 7, she landed her first film role Child of Ragedirected by Larry Peerce in 1992. Already, the little girl had to play long scenes of cries and screams, like a premonition on the atypical turn that her career will take a few years later, as she realizes today:

“In retrospect, this film was a turning point both professionally and personally. »

The world of horror film dubbing

At 20, Ashley’s CV was already very impressive: she had acted in more than 40 films and television series. But at the end of the 2000s, the young actress decided to take a bold turn in her career:

“Aspiring to a quieter existence, I decided, at the end of the 2000s, to no longer appear on screen, in order to devote myself to dubbing work. I was lucky enough to land roles that allowed me to really play with my voice, and screaming became my specialty. »

Be “scream artist”, as it defines itself, requires certain skills. For Ashley, it’s about duty master subtle modulations in the voice and determine whether the cry should have peak moments or remain constant.

Whether in fiction or in reality, there are several types of cry. Indeed, we do not howl in the same way if our life is in danger or if we are simply surprised. In horror movie scream dubbing, it’s exactly the same logic, as Ashley explains:

“In ghost stories, for example, we often use screams and shrill cries to convey the experience of fear. »

The days of damsel in distress cries are over

“As an actor, you let out all kinds of cries, and sometimes there is a gap between what you would do in real life and what people expect to hear on screen. »

But do these shout doublings accurately reflect the behavior we would adopt in real life? Ashley is realistic: most people when startled, or frightened, just hold their breath and don’t let out a sound. But on screen, that wouldn’t create enough tension.

“We often think of the classic screams of Fay Wray in King Kong (Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1933) or by Janet Leigh in Psychosis (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960). These are beautiful cries, but they are also cries of damsels in distress. Today, women express much more rage. There are fewer roles “terrified women” and more provocative characters. »

Ashley claims to have witnessed this evolution of the place of women in the American film industry. According to her, actresses are getting bigger and deeper roles today than they did 30 years ago. Women become superheroines who fight and show their raw emotions, while taking the lead in action movies and series.

Scream dubber, a relaxing profession

“There are countless types of cry: of fear, of anger, of rage. We can shout for joy, in case of success, and there is this deep cry of female emancipation. There is the groan of pain and sorrow, and the cry of effort and struggle. »

Ashley says the hardest thing for her is realizing cries expressing intense pain. Faced with a character overcome by grief or still in a state of shock, Ashley often feels illegitimate and uncomfortable. With a doctorate in psychology, she defines herself as being a very emphatic personwhich in his profession can be just as much an advantage as a disadvantage.

Daily, Ashley takes care of her work tool, her vocal cords, by drinking lots of tea. The young woman does not regret having chosen the cry for profession, because as paradoxical as it may seem at first sight, she has never been so relaxed:

My career certainly has me screaming more than average. It is something very relaxing. After spending a day screaming, I feel lighter, more cheerful. »

Ashey Peldon’s Life Story somewhat echoes Quentin Dupieux’s dramatic comedy, Realityreleased in 2014. In this fiction, a director, played by Alain Chabat, tries to make his first horror film. He then has 48 hours to find the best moan in the history of cinema. if he wants his feature film to obtain funding. A totally absurd fable, ultimately not so far from the backstage of the 7th art.

About to turn 80 years old, He has been dedicated body and soul to acting for six decades. His story begins at the age of 19, while he was studying law. In the classrooms, he and a group of his classmates came up with the idea of putting together a stage presentation that surprised the dean of the faculty. The adventure ended with the founding of the iconic Catholic University Theater (TUC) and with Ricardo Blume, recently arrived from the Royal Conservatory of Dramatic Art in Madrid, as professor. “Since then I never left the theater,” he recalls. His career was consolidated with the novels in which he starred, among them the remembered “Simplemente María” and “El adorable Professor Aldao”. The cinema also accompanied his professional growth, first with “In the jungle there are no stars” and “The Green Wall”, by Armando Robles Godoy; and then with the award-winning “Caídas del cielo” and “Without Compassion”, by Francisco Lombardi. This time, demonstrating his relevance and versatility, Romero returns to the big screen with the refreshing comedy “Irresistible Seductors”, the debut feature by Rodrigo Viaggio and Jorge Velarde, which premieres on June 9 on local billboards.

Although he is more associated with characters with a strong character and a dramatic cut, the first actor has exploited his comedic streak on stage for years: in the 1970s he was part of the Manuel de Sabatini Comedy Company, with which he traveled around throughout Colombia for a year and a half, and in Lima he spent a long season at the Real Teatro de San Isidro, at the hands of producer Horacio Paredes. In “Irresistible Seducers”, a film that combines youth and acting experience, Romero plays Giacomo Casanova, a master of seduction who guides four young men with his advice for conquest. The idea was born in 2015, the director and screenwriter Rodrigo Viaggio tells about it. “I grew up watching The Karate Kid and I always liked that relationship between Mr. Miyagui and Daniel Sam, so I asked myself why not do a comedy where an experienced man teaches young men to seduce the old way”. Three years later, filming began and the long road to post-production in the midst of a pandemic. Regarding the premiere of the film, we spoke with Romero about this experience and his extensive career.

Hernán Romero's fame as a telenovela heartthrob was forged between the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s with "simply mary" Y "The lovely Professor Aldao".
Hernán Romero’s fame as a leading man in telenovelas was forged between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s with “Simplemente María” and “El adorable Professor Aldao”.

You once mentioned that being an actor in your time was almost suicide.

An insane act! The problem and concern of my parents was what are you going to eat? You’re going to starve! I remember that the first envelope of a fortnight that I took home and put on the table was more than what my father earned in a month. What he didn’t know was that I had to wait for another novel to come out in order to work. That money should last me for a long time. But it helped my father calm down and know that I could live as an actor.

In “Irresistible Seducers” you are Giacomo Casanova, a teacher for four young men who want to conquer the girl of their dreams. How do you summarize the art of seduction?

I think there are no tips to seduce. The thing must be mutual. That that the man should be the seducer and the woman the prey is not true. Many times the man is the one who ends up being hunted. I think that happens most of the time.

What attracted you to this soon-to-be-released comedy?

That they have taken great care of the details, it seemed to me a valid attempt to do comedy in Peru. They are going to have fun. Not because it is commercial, the film must be a slop. It’s like in the theater, where there is theater with a message, but there is also the other that I call digestive theater, which is the one that makes you laugh and relax, like “Irresistible seducers”. Doing comedy does not mean losing respect for the public by slapping, hitting or saying profanities. Making people laugh with good weapons is complicated.

With what work did you debut as a professional?

It was in a tiny role in a play produced by Pablo de Madalengoitia at the Teatro Segura. He was called “Golden Boy” and it was about some boxers. I remember that Willy de la Cruz worked there, who was a sparring partner for Cassius Clay, better known as Mohamed Ali, heavyweight champion.

What has been the most difficult role of your career?

All the roles demand a lot, but if I like the character, however difficult it may be, I assume it. Some important characters that I have done in recent times were in the works “The Skylark” by Jean Anouilh and “Enemy of the People” by Ibsen.

Apart from Blume, who were your great teachers?

Luis Álvarez was a man who marked me. His example, his dedication and respect for what he did, was a man with great dignity. Roca Rey was another of the directors who directed me in many of the works I did in my early days.

He had an important step in the Association of Amateur Artists

I worked there for 17 years and I remember an anecdote about the tremor that occurred recently. Well, we were rehearsing a play directed by Luis Álvarez, “The World’s Greatest Faker,” which is about a young man who has a fight with his father and who they accuse of having killed him. In one scene we all had to grab him and tie him to a log in the center of the triple AAA cabin. Ricardo Blume played this guy. It was like 2 in the morning and he started shaking all over. We got scared and we all ran out and left him there, tied up. After two or three minutes we remember him and return. He told us everything (laughs).

Hernán Romero in “Who’s Who?”, comedy of errors with Gustavo Mc Lennan, Atillia Boshetti and Yvonne Frayssinet. “We were the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse.”

What would you say is the first lesson an aspiring actor should take?

Take things seriously. Acting is not a game. People say “ah, what fun it must be to act”. Yes, of course, but it’s my job, you have to be responsible. I am a punctuality maniac, the only one who beat me was Luis Álvarez. An actor has to be early to free himself, get rid of the problems of the day and get psyched up to do a good job.

Before, there was a lot of rehearsal just for a couple of performances, now things have changed.

We rehearsed the first play I did for three months and three performances were given. Now the season can be a couple of months. There is more public, more knowledge of what theater really is as a profession. There is a lot of young talent, the thing is to persevere and not get discouraged. It is a very competitive world. That is why, in my time, I would have liked to have been born in an environment that offered more opportunities, such as Spain or London.

What is the best thing that theater has given you? Is there something negative in your profession?

I don’t think the theater has given me anything negative. It has taught me to know the human soul, the actor exposes his experiences interpreting the soul of the characters, lends his emotions and feelings. It’s like someone playing a score, the actor plays a text with his feelings, with his body and emotions. There is a whole mechanism for that, it is studied, but the gift is there. Who is not born with talent for this will not be more than one. You have to have the flame, the spark.

At the beginning of 2000 he had an episode of very delicate health…

I almost died, I had a perforated diverticulum. I had six operations on my stomach. Truly I was with one foot on the other side, but I received a very clear message from the Lord and I put myself at his service. For 14 years I have been carrying the word of the Lord through different countries. I learned a complete gospel, that of Saint Mark, and interpreted it for two hours as if it were a monologue.

Quite a challenge.

The interesting thing was that this text from 2000 thousand years ago, primitive, archaic, strong, arid, had to be made to sound as if it were from the 21st century. And without changing the letter because it is the word of God, with what authority could it be changed? ? I finished that world tour in 2012, it was a Norwegian Bible Society production. This had a captive audience because people from all evangelical denominations attended. Admission was also not charged. How wonderful to be a channel of blessings for others, may God use you to tell his story and bless others.

Recently his health relapsed.

I had several health problems, but I still have to keep fighting here. Sometimes, due to different circumstances, I say, “ah, how lucky I am”. And no, it’s not luck. He is god telling me that he still needs on earth. The talent I have is not a merit, it came with me, it is a gift, a gift to serve the Lord.

MicroRNAs are small RNA molecules, which regulate gene expression. Their canonical role is gene silencing by targeting messenger RNAs in cell cytoplasm. However, this novel microRNA, miR-466c, has a different mechanism of action. It upregulates the vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) by targeting the gene promoter in the cell nucleus.

In addition to expanding the academic understanding of microRNA biology, these findings have commercial relevance for the development of novel RNA drugs. Increasing the expression of VEGFA by using small RNAs offers novel options for the treatment of ischemic cardiovascular disease, where the blood supply in the tissue is compromised.

“RNA activation as a phenomenon has been known for 16 years already, but its commercial potential has been recognised only recently,” says Adjunct Professor Mikko Turunen, Chair of the newly founded RNatives company, which will be commercialising the patented microRNA drug.

“Our patented microRNA drug has several advantages over traditional means of increasing gene expression. First of all, by activating the cell’s own therapeutic gene (e.g., VEGFA), all the different spliceforms of the gene are correctly produced. Also, being a small RNA, it is much less immunogenic and more stable than longer RNAs, such as mRNA based drugs,” Turunen says.

In addition to RNA drugs, RNatives is developing engineered exosomes for the delivery of these RNAs into the patients.

Shrek is one of the most beloved franchises of all movie fans on the big screen, and when the first Shrek movie was released, gamers were enjoying PlayStation 2 or Nintendo 64 games. consoles like Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube and the first Xbox. So, one way or another, it was only a matter of time before the ogre made the leap to video games.

Something that seems quite striking to us is that the first Shrek game was released exclusively for Game Boy Color (Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown) and later came some platforms for Xbox and GameCube, where Shrek has to rescue Princess Fiona. That is why today we will delve into 5 video games inspired by the Shrek saga.

After this platform game, there were other installments of the main series made up of 4 titles and other spin-offs with the characters from the movie. Among them, we can highlight a Mario Kart-style racing game, published by Activision, and some very fun party games, so today we complement a Top 5 that we showed you a few days ago and delve into more of the titles of the dear saga.

Shrek

It is a platform game developed by Sandbox Studios for Xbox and the first game in the franchise based on the film of the same name. The player has to complete certain objectives which is usually to search for an item and perform an action. It doesn’t follow the same story as the animated film, rather it’s like a sequel and takes place after Shrek reclaims the swamp. On this occasion, the protagonist receives a message from the Magic Mirror because Princess Fiona has been captured by the evil wizard Merlin.

Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing

It is a kart racing video game developed by Torus Games and published by Activision that is based on the film franchise. Players have to first choose between 12 different characters to make races of 6. Each one of them has special stats and you can also choose the available track or tournament. Among other mechanics, there is also a certain combat component to defeat other rivals in races.

Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown

It is a 2D action fighting video game developed by Prolific and published by TDK Mediactive for the Game Boy Color. There are 9 different scenes based on the movie such as the swamp, the forest, the castle or the bridge. The player controls a character and can make offensive and defensive moves to lower the health of his opponent, controlled by the AI. It is a single player game, so there is no multiplayer mode.

Puss in Boots

It is an action video game based on the movie of the same name, developed by Blitz Games for PlayStation 3, Wii and Nintendo DS. In the years leading up to meeting Shrek and Donkey, Puss in Boots must clear his name of all charges brought against him, becoming a wanted fugitive. It has single player and multiplayer modes and is compatible with Xbox Kinect technology.

Shrek Swamp Kart Speedway

It is a kart racing game developed for the Game Boy Advance. Shrek loves his home sweet bog, but Lord Farquaad declared it part of his Kingdom as one big dump. Shrek has to find a way to get rid of all that junk and creates the best racing car of all time. With the help of other characters and his invention, Shrek will compete in the craziest circuit to get the dragon’s treasure.

DISAPPEARANCE – Discovered in France in the early 2000s with birdmanthe first book in a series of horror novels centered on the character of Jack Caffery, Clare Dunkel, of her real name, succumbed to a rare neurodegenerative disease.

The queen of British thriller Mo Hayder, author of a dozen shocking books since 1999 (2000 in France for the French translation of birdman at the Presses de la Cité), died at the age of 59 following a neurodegenerative disease diagnosed last December, announces its publisher.

Clare Dunkel, her real name, had had a chaotic journey to say the least before embarking on writing. After leaving school at the age of 15, she accumulated all sorts of little restful odd jobs: bartender, security guard, hostess in a Tokyo club…and finally an English teacher in this Asia where she lived for many years. .

In 1999, she published birdman, the first in a series of horror novels centered on the character of Jack Caffery. In this first volume, the man investigates the murder of five women: traces of punctures in the spine, mutilations in the chest, the corpse of a bird in the abdomen… For her debut, she does not go hand in hand dead! From the start, the reader knows the identity of the serial killer and follows the investigator gradually advancing through the worlds of drugs and prostitution. 500 pages of concrete suspense, with a grand finale, birdman was reminiscent Red Dragonthe masterpiece of Thomas Harris.

Two years later, she did it again with The Evening Mana logical continuation of birdman. And Jack Caffery is still the victim of recurring nightmares in which his younger brother appears kidnapped by a pedophile and never found.

It was in 2005 with Tokyo, that she returns to the country of her formative years. The pace is different from the first two thrillers. Hayder embarks on a complex plot against the backdrop of the Sino-Japanese war. The heroine is a young Englishwoman with a troubled past fascinated by the Nanjing massacres. In her quest, she will come across yakuza, an American gigolo, an androgynous creature… Slower novel, with a disturbing atmosphere, Tokyo baffled readers but was acclaimed on its release by a few thriller heavyweights like Michael Connelly, Val McDermid and Harlan Coben.

Return to his hero Jack Caffery three years later with Ritual, an explosive cocktail based on thrillers, psychological novels, thrillers and fantasy. In the process, the tireless author, publishes skin. Caffery, who has become a commissioner, is still assisted by Flea Marley, a young diver from the Bristol underwater brigade discovered in Ritual. The duo follows several cases and Hayder, an expert in glauqueries adds, in the background, the frightening presence of a flayer obsessed with animal and human skins!

With The blades, in 2011, she moved away from her favorite characters to stage two sisters in a 500-page thriller of great darkness. A murdered teenager, a mother and her daughter in danger, a gallery of ramshackle beings (an X film producer, a drug dealer, a veteran of the war in Iraq…). From false leads to twists and turns Hayder masters his art to perfection.

In 2015, with Viscera, a new thriller with a poetic title, Caffery finds an old acquaintance, the Walker, a man also in search of a missing loved one. They will have to solve the riddle of a lost dog who has a message calling for help on his collar and jewels in his stomach…

In fifteen years, Mo Hayder, crowned by the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award and the no less prestigious Crime Writers’ Association Dagger in the Library Award, adapted by the BBC, acclaimed by her peers, has succeeded in pushing the limits of whodunnit with its horror thrillers.

She wrote a work of great originality, covered with incredible images, not necessarily intended for sensitive souls. A mix of Grand Guignol à la Thomas Harris in his series Hannibal and fantastic atmospheric thrillers à la John Connolly, a talented Irish novelist. The English publisher of Mo Hayder affirms that the novelist had just completed under the name of Theo Sand a novel totally different from the rest of her work. The Book of Sandset in a parallel universe, is due out in England in early 2022.

Is Cannes the little Seoul on the Mediterranean? Because the Festival can no longer do without South Korean films, prized and awarded on the Croisette. This year alone, four films shot in South Korea are presented as part of the Festival and two compete in competition, two chances for the Palme d’Or in a selection that includes 19 other selected works.

First of all there is Decision to leave by Park Chan-wook, director awarded at Cannes in 2004 with OldboysGrand Jury Prize, then three years later with Thirst, this is my blood, jury prize. Then there is brokerJapanese movie Hirokazu Kore-Eda in South Korean language and with Song Kang-ho, the k-movie actor Parasite, a film that received the Palme d’Or in 2019 and was a huge success in French cinemas. A journey that still goes through an Oscar for best film, a first for a film in a foreign language.

Out of competition, Cannes has also declared its love for Hunt by deciding to screen it in a midnight session. A breathtaking action and spy film, which offers no respite in 1980s South Korea. Its director is none other than Lee Jung-jae, the star of Squid Gamethe Netflix series that was a hit in 2021.

But then, why has South Korean cinema become so essential and recognized in Hollywood as well as in the most prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Venice or Berlin? “In Korea, for a long time, we have been used to seeing foreign films, which has nourished our cinema, which today is capable of tackling all genres. With the desire to share it with the rest of the world” , explains Lee Jung-Jae, interviewed by franceinfo. It’s true that recently, there has been an explosion of attention for South Korean films and series. So far Koreans have tried to make very good films and I think they will do even better in the future to satisfy foreign audiences. It is also by having at heart to share these works that Korean content is very dynamic.”

The export of South Korean cinema and culture is also an issue of influence for the country, which since the 1990s and particularly at the end of the 1997 crisis has invested massively in the entertainment industries to revive its economy, promote the country internationally and even benefit from tourism spin-offs. This is the case for k-movies, such as k-dramas and k-pop, of which BTS is the symbol by having become the musical group at the top of the sales all over the planet.

The researchers Vincenzo Cicchelli and Sylvie October, recall in their book K-pop, soft-power and global culture that this development was accompanied by private companies like Samsung who needed content to develop and diversify their activities. To conquer the markets, first Asian then Western, the country first bet on quality and particularly aesthetic works. A momentum that created a dynamic, allowed the emergence of studios, producers, actors.

“Today is a favorable framework that gives energy to young people to embark on projects that can have international outlets”, observes Kore-Eda, the director of Broker, interviewed by franceinfo. And it’s true that we Japanese, who are geographically close to South Korea, are very envious of this dazzling new generation for all their efforts and the energy they provide.”

Kore-eda is not the only one to be influenced by this country and its talents. Davy Chou, admirer among others of Hong Sang-soo, shot his latest film there, Return to Seoul, with renowned actors from the peninsula. The film is inspired by the true story of a young French girl adopted in Korea. His film presented in the selection “Un certain regard” has also benefited from South Korean public subsidies, funds intended to promote the country and creation.

Although he grew strong from fear and from the souls of those he killed, the only way to stop him was to take him to the “real world”; that is, to the waking world, where he could be hurt.

Because his physical appearance caused a great impact on the audience due to his disfigured face and his burns, as well as his peculiar way of dressing that stood out for a glove with sharp blades that he made himself, many of his followers are unaware of passages about him, which we will detail below. In the following lines we will briefly describe everything about this terrifying character, whom we saw for the first time in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984), by Wes Craven.

1. How did the name Freddy Krueger come about?

Its creator Wes Craven announced that the name of this evil being arose from the experiences he had as a child. Although initially influenced by the silent film “Nosferatu” (1922) and a disfigured homeless man he once saw, his character was inspired by none other than one of his schoolmates named Fred Krueger, who he bullied and abused him constantly. In the film, he decided to subtly change the name to Freddy.

2. Why is your sweater red and green?

The colors of Freddy Krueger’s striped sweater were no coincidence, as Craven relied on an article in Scientific American in which he detailed that red and green were the most difficult to perceive. To this, he added a felt hat and a gloved hand.

3. The real reason the gloved hand hangs off Krueger’s body

The gloved hand was inspired by Wes Craven’s cat, which made him look like he had a long reach in the shadow world while everyone was asleep. However, there was a problem: it was too heavy to give it fluid movement, so he chose to leave it hanging down, which he identified as this character as well.

4. Freddy Krueger’s screen time

Although he is the main villain of “A Nightmare On Elm Street”, Krueger has appeared in approximately seven minutes. The reason? The filmmakers wanted that in addition to presenting him as someone terrifying, he was also someone unknown. Something different happened in the sequels, where we saw it more often.

5. Were his powers based on real events?

To create the powers that Krueger had, Wes Craven and his team based it on a real event: the death of several people who suffered from nightmares and died in their sleep according to the Los Angeles Times. Hence he emerges as a dream demon.
