HASith broadcast in more than 200 countries for an average of 130 million viewers, the Champions League final remains a special event. And for the first time, Canal+ will produce this big deadline, in an agenda disrupted by the war in Ukraine: the invasion of the country by Russia forced UEFA to move the final from Saint Petersburg to Saint-Denis. “We had to organize in three months what we can usually do in a year and a half”, confides Laurent Lachand to the Point. The director of the poster between Real Madrid and Liverpool even sees it as a sign with this relocation to France. ?I know the Russian television crews, who don’t have much to do with it. I feel sorry for them. However, it is a great symbol that this final is being played in France, with Karim Benzema in particular. »

?A director is like a coach?

Director of the round ball for Canal + for many years, Laurent Lachand takes us behind the scenes for such an important match. ?We will have more than 40 cameras to follow the whole evening, including 32 solely dedicated to the game. We have mobilized more than 200 people for this event, assembled four OB vans to have a large structure. We have expertise for sport, with innovation, capture and production, in order to give the best possible editorial level. A football match as a director is a strict framework that looks a bit like a coaching tactic. Each camera, like the players, has a specific role. There is a strategy to follow! »

?Football has changed,? said Kylian Mbappé recently at a press conference following his extension to PSG. The distribution of this sport and the way of filming it illustrate this well. Laurent Lachand confirms this, behind his controllers and his screens: ?We had a qualitative evolution of the image accompanied also by the sound. We create immersion, in the middle of the players of the match. This final will be the first in an Atmos audio system, to plunge into the heart of the stadium. The broadcast will be in standard UHDR, it’s like our vision, even a little better! The slow motions are also of better quality, we can have more dynamic sequences. Before, we did on cassettes, we had to rewind the tape with a wheel, it was quite tedious! Fortunately, today everything is digital. »

One of the major recent upheavals in football remains the introduction of video refereeing. Even if the VAR is still not unanimous, Laurent Lachand sees it as an interesting sequence from his point of view as a director. ?It was a tool to be tamed. I discovered it at the Confederations Cup in 2017, then it became an element that creates verified decision. It settles situations in a factual way, we would no longer have a goal like the English in 1966. It creates appeasement. This is not dramatization, but storytelling. The long time is not a problem, it allows to have suspense. People on their couch can argue with each other. Once in a while, it’s nice to sit down and breathe. »

Too many stats kill the stat?

As for the innovations specific to Canal+ and the organization of meetings, Laurent Lachand discusses certain experiments which did not convince everyone, in particular the ” aircam “. “For video game enthusiasts, it was like Fifa. We wanted to test new ways of filming. We may have been too direct, without showing enough pedagogy, because that changed old habits. However, all the exchanges with the consultants were positive: they considered that it was a good thing to see and understand the game.

Finally, when discussing the future and the future ways of filming a match, the director of this 2022 Champions League final sees an important balance to be respected between the field and the statistics. ?We can think that augmented reality, data or predictive statistics will be more and more present to explain the different possible scenarios. However, football is not basketball. You can’t overwhelm people with too much information, but you can have two audiences: one with family or friends, and the other more professional. It is up to us to create additional channels. If someone wants to see both the game and Ancelotti with a camera pointed at him, we have to offer him this possibility. ?Even if we will not focus on the Italian coach, we hope that this final will keep all its promises. »

EVERY FARM title image

The Umbrella Academy (saison 3)

Spider-Man : New Generation

The Umbrella Academy (saison 3)

6:27 p.m .: Tsitsipas wins in three sets

It passes for Tsitsipas. Without trembling, the Greek is reassured after having already conceded four sets in his first two games. This time, he won three sets to nil against the Swede Mikel Ymer: 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. The world No.4 will face in the round of 16 either the Dane Holger Rune or the last tricolor survivor Hugo Gaston.

6:20 p.m .: Hurkacz dismisses Goffin

After having battled in the first set (7-5), the Pole Hubert Hurkacz then played his game against David Goffin. He won in three sets: 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. The world No.12 will face the winner of the match between Casper Ruud and Lorenzo Sonego, scheduled in stride.

5:54 p.m .: Tsitsipas unfolds against Ymer

If he had to work in the first and second round, the world No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently going through the third round without difficulty, which opposes him to the Swede Mikael Ymer. The Greek offered the first two sets with the same score (6-2) and broke his opponent at the start of the third set.

5.20 p.m .: End clap for Gilles Simon

Gilles Simon, 158th in the world, said goodbye to Roland-Garros on Saturday’s elimination in the 3rd round by the Croatian Marin Cilic (23rd) 6-0, 6-3, 6-2, appearing very emotional after the match point while the public chanted ?Gilou?.

The 37-year-old Frenchman announced on May 7 that he would end his career at the end of the season. For his part, Marin Cilic will face in the round of 16 the world No.2 Daniil Medvedev who has been impressive since the start of the tournament where he has not yet lost a single set.

4:33 p.m .: Simon loses the second set and finds himself back against the wall

Gilles Simon resisted Cilic more than in the first one-sided round, but that was not enough: the Croatian won 6-3 and found himself one set away from the round of 16.

4:22 p.m .: Paula Badosa gives up!

The world N.4 Paula Badosa gave up on Saturday in the third round of Roland-Garros when she was led 6-3, 2-1 by the Russian Veronika Kudermetova. The Spaniard, who requested a medical break for right knee pain late in the first set, threw in the towel after being broken in the second. With her retirement, the world No.1 Iga Swiatek is the only survivor of the top 10 before the second week.

4:12 p.m .: Pegula and Kasatkina ensure, Sabalenka is disillusioned

Decidedly, Aryna Sabalenka does not succeed at Roland-Garros. The Belarusian, who has never passed the 3rd round in 5 participations, lost again at the gates of the eighth against the Italian Camila Giorgi (N.28) in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6 -0. Unlike the world No.7, the other favorites assumed their status: Pegula dismissed Zidansek 6-1, 7-6 (7/2) and Kasatkina got the better of Rogers 6-3, 6-2.

When athletes parade at Roland-Garros

Tennis fans are numerous, including in other sports. These first days at Roland-Garros saw a good number of footballers and other sportsmen parade through the stands at Porte d’Auteuil. SEE SLIDESHOW.

3:49 p.m .: The ordeal of the French continues

Like Alizé Cornet before him, Gilles Simon takes a bubble for the first set against Marin Cilic. Broken from the 2nd game, the Frenchman did not manage to put the Croatian in difficulty and absolutely must show something else to hope for the eighth.

3:15 p.m .: Gilles Simon starts against Cilic

Will Gilles Simon be able to restore the French coat of arms, damaged since yesterday? The Niçois begins his match against Marin Cilic (N.20). It is the Croatian who serves.

2:47 p.m .: Cornet gives up, it’s over for the French at Roland-Garros

The French N.1 Alizé Cornet, 40th in the world, diminished by thigh pain contracted in the previous round, gave up on Saturday during her third round match against the Chinese Qinwen Zheng (74th), when she was trailing 6 -0, 3-0.

There is no longer any Frenchwoman in contention in the Parisian Grand Slam after the eliminations of Diane Parry on Friday and Léolia Jeanjean on Saturday at the start of the day. On Thursday, the 40th in the world, who had reached the quarters this year at the Australian Open, appeared to feel pain in the inside and upper left thigh during her match-winning match against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, 13th. and winner of the tournament in 2017.

2:39 p.m .: Zheng sticks a bubble to Cornet!

Alizé Cornet drops the first set to his opponent with a score of 6-0. The Frenchwoman seems very borrowed and unable to respond to Zheng’s very offensive game.

2:30 p.m .: Medvedev expedited with Kecmanovic

The world No.2 left almost nothing to his Serbian opponent (N.28) by winning in three sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. He will find the winner of the match between Cilic and? Gilles Simon in the next round.

2:22 p.m .: Cornet in difficulty

Very complicated start to the match for the Frenchwoman. Broken from the start, she is now three games behind (3-0) over her opponent, the Chinese Zheng.

2:10 p.m .: Sinner and Rublev spin in eighths

The Italian Jannik Sinner (N.11) sent his third round in three sets against the American Mcdonald, 60th in the world (6-3, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3). Sinner notably saved 11 set points in the second set to finally win the tie-break.

Unlike Sinner, Russian Andrey Rublev (N.7) dropped a set to Chilean Christian Garin, ranked 37th and beaten 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (13/11). But Rublev found the resources to conclude by saving five equalizers in two sets everywhere.

The two men will meet in the eighth on Monday.

2 p.m.: Let’s go for Alizé Cornet!

The last Frenchwoman in the running serves to open this match against the Chinese Qinwen Zheng, 74th in the world.

1:50 p.m.: Swiatek continues on his way

It’s a walk in the park for world No.1 Iga Swiatek. After two quick first rounds, the Pole qualified for the round of 16 by dismissing Danka Kovinic in two sets 6-3, 7-5. She can potentially find herself facing Alizé Cornet if the latter wins.

1:10 p.m.: End of the Jeanjean fairy tale

The step was too high for Leolia Jeanjean. The Frenchwoman, who wrote the most beautiful story of Roland-Garros, was outclassed on Saturday in the third round, 6-1, 6-4, by the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu. After knocking down world No.8 Karolina Pliskova, Jeanjean’s register did not surprise Begu, ranked 63rd. Facing the Romanian, as if midnight had struck for the Cinderella of the Porte d’Auteuil, Leolia Jeanjean, who points to 227th place in the world, multiplied the unforced errors (27) despite the conjurations from the stands of the Suzanne-Lenglen court.

Kao the Kangaroo has been around for a long time but few people know about it. This franchise began its first adventure on the Dreamcast and the Game Boy Advance in 2000, 22 years ago! Without saying that the series is an exceptional one, it has come a long way since then with 3 other titles. Today, it returns to its basics and invites us into a new version of the series. Personally, this is a first for Kao the Kangaroo, having never taken the time to try me out. In all honesty, we seemed far from the best in the genre like Mario, Spyro, Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter, to name a few. But the presentation of the new one seems very promising, that’s why I’m embarking on the test of Kao the Kangaroo!

KAO THE KANGAROO TECHNICAL SHEET

Young Kangaroo looking for adventure

We start the game on the hats of wheels. Kao, our young hero, desperately searches for what happened to his father and sister. The two having disappeared without a trace, he then turns to his friends for help. He discovers his father’s boxing gloves which seem to hold a mysterious power. The call of adventure couldn’t be any clearer, so it’s high time to discover the answers to its questions.

This all happens in just a few minutes after completing a small portion of the tutorial so you’re ready for the bigger picture. Honestly, Kao controls himself like a charm and easily. In terms of movement, our hero has the ability to jump and also do a double jump. It can also cling to the edge of platforms. In terms of attacks, the feeling of the punches is very pleasant. He can also do a dive attack to overwhelm his opponents. Finally, he can also roll to avoid enemies but also access hidden places. Throughout the adventure, the character will discover new powers to overcome the threat that persecutes him.

Platforming in its most classic genre

Kao the Kangaroo is not going to revolutionize the genre that we have loved for so long. We have to move from one place to another by jumping and eliminating the different threats on our way. Just like Donkey Kong games, there are multiple items to collect in each level, starting with the letters KAO. To be honest, you don’t have to search a lot to find the different items. Hidden places are often very obvious to see and the rest falls squarely on us.

The level design of the game is still very interesting with a lot of variety from one world to another. For example, there is a world of lava, another of ice and many others. There are also, in each of the levels, multiple mini-levels, which ask us to fulfill a specific objective. Each of the levels takes an average of twenty minutes to complete and although there may be several paths to bring us to the same place, it is rather simple to find your way around. However, like many platform games, sometimes the camera is problematic. It happens that we think we have jumped correctly when in the end, it was not the case. And unfortunately, as soon as you fall into lava or the swamp, you have to start your segment again. Nothing too disturbing but today we appreciate these moments less.

Performance issues

Unfortunately, Kao the Kangaroo isn’t flawless. Having tested the game on the Nintendo Switch, it is not possible to say if this is also the case on the other consoles. On the other hand, on the Nintendo console, the game seems to suffer from the capacity of the console. When several enemies are in our path, the game slows down considerably. Nothing really disturbing but it’s rather disappointing, especially since there is not so much action in front of us. In 2022, that’s more or less forgivable.

Also, for some unknown reason, the game visually suffers at illogical moments. For example, it becomes blurry and of lower quality in certain phases of the game. We suspect that this is due to the multiple elements on the screen. But as for the previous point, this is not a valid reason today and it would probably have been necessary to refine everything. It’s hard to believe that on a console like the PlayStation 5 or Series X, this is possible. Let’s hope not.

Kao the Kangaroo Verdict

This game will not go down in history, I think you guessed it. We have to admit that it represents an interesting and still accessible challenge for people who are new to the genre. Your children could find a lot of fun there and later tackle a little more fleshed out games. It’s absolutely nothing mean-spirited towards Kao the Kangaroo but just like the other games in the series, it lacks something to elevate it to the level of the best games in the genre, like Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. But the game does not make this claim and the price also justifies the whole thing. Its lifespan of about 8 hours is still more than reasonable. That’s why it can represent something interesting for some players.

Kao the Kangaroo ? A new fight!

Good entry price

Simple and effective as a platform game

Good lifespan (about 8h)

Suffers from major performance issues

Too simple for players accustomed to the genre

Game news Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!

After long months of waiting and doubts, the Overwatch community was finally able to approach the second opus through a beta, accessible from April 26 to May 17. A very important phase of development, which allows Blizzard to collect a lot of usable data.

The study of performance is done at all levels

In order to reassure the players and show more transparency on the progress of the project, the developers have recently published an analysis article which discusses the influence of community data and feedback on the balancing of Overwatch 2. The article is quite extensive, so Blizzard takes the time to explain its approach in the introduction:

Data, community feedback, user research, internal discussions, and just playing the game all influence our design choices. Data can allow us to see the big picture, to zoom in on tiny details, or to highlight general trends.

Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!

The first element observed by the development teams relates to the performance of available characters. Sojourn, the new character, was therefore closely observed, as were the redesigns of Sombra, Bastion, Doomfist and Orisa. In order to successfully balance the game, the developers believe that it is necessary to observe the behavior of the high level playerswho push the title to its limits, but also that of less efficient players, who can stumble on some gameplay elements.

To gauge this performance, we look at all competitive ranks and levels of play, both globally and separately, to visualize how different portions of the community are reacting to the current state of the game.

Blizzard’s ‘Quantified Interest’ Analysis: A Closer Look at Character Popularity

For Blizzard, “performance” takes many forms, starting with utilization rate. The first chart released shows the percentage of play time per character versus total game time. The developers take this opportunity to note that, past the first days of the beta during which Sojourn was played on both teams half the timeits use has only diminished:

At its maximum, Sojourn’s usage rate was almost 80%, which is huge for a DPS heroine. Ana maintained a very high usage rate for most of the beta, but this is also the case in the current game. Orisa and Doomfist, two tanks that received a major overhaul, were also used extensively throughout the beta.

Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!

To complete the analysis and take into account the imbalance between the roles, Blizzard has defined a weighted utilization rate which reflects the use of a hero based on other characters with a similar role. “Specifically, we take each character’s raw utilization rate and divide it by their role’s break-even rate, which is the raw utilization rate at which all heroes in the same role are played equally, explains the team, which illustrates the point by stating that with this weighted rate, Sojourn was far more played than the others at the start of the beta. Its rate of use then experienced a vertiginous drop in favor of reworked characters like Orisa. Then we find Doomfist, Bastion and Sombra.

Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!

It was feedback and analysis that allowed Blizzard to make changes during the beta. On May 5, an update changed quite a few things. This was partly developed by looking at map win rates, but there was a limit. Indeed, when a character finds himself in both teams, there is necessarily one who wins, which limits the readability of the data.

Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!

To counter this, analyzes were specifically carried out on parts where a character only appeared on one side, which has been called “a mirrorless period”. The graph accompanying this explanation therefore shows that Symmetra has a very high win rate, in particular because players have used it in favorable situations, before switching characters when a defeat loomed. This therefore explains the very low win rates of Sojourn and Orisa, since the community wanted to play themno matter the situation.

With all this background and data, it becomes quite complex to decide which characters to focus on during balance updates. The tweaks to Sojourn were a minor setback (…) Orisa remains as is for now, as it’s still unclear if she’s not a good fit, or if it’s the community as a whole struggling to find her brands with it. We are leaning more towards the latter option (…)

That said, we are still considering making further changes to Orisa and Doomfist. Soldier: 76 received an update thanks to an ideal mix of data and community feedback, and the adjustment to Sombra’s movement speed was intended to take into account the unintended synergy of these two characters with the new passive DPS ability.

Overwatch 2: What are the most played characters in the beta? Blizzard numbers!

The first changes and the observation of their consequences

After compiling the data and comments, the first changes were therefore made. Blizzard wanted to see if Soldier 76 saw his winrate drop or if Zenyatta got back into the game. And obviously, it is a successin mirror period as in period without mirror, even if it is only a first step:

In general, for all supports that had a balance change (including the Valkyrie bug fix for Ange), the win rate change without mirrors was immediate, except for Baptiste, whose balance changed. subject of a later update. Which means that overall, the changes have had the desired effect!

The waking dream of Léolia Jeanjean will therefore have stopped this Saturday, May 28 at 12:40 p.m. against the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (6-1 6-4 in 1:26 a.m.) with regrets for not having known and could reverse the trend.

Great stories usually have an end that those who write them try to put off as much as possible. That of Léolia Jeanjean will not last beyond this Saturday: the Montpellier player from Stade Toulousain was indeed eliminated by Irina-Camila Begu in two sets 6-1 6-4 in 1 hour 26 minutes.

The 31-year-old Romanian, if she only ranks 63rd in the world, is a real client on clay. She was playing her tenth Roland-Garros (8th runner-up in 2016), nine more than Léolia who paid, in part, this lack of experience.

?You would have to be crazy to think that?

Rising to 31st place at the end of 2015, leaving the Top 100 only once (124th at the end of 2013) for twelve years, she presented a CV such that Léolia Jeanjean refuted the status of “favorite”, on which her club teammate at Stade Toulousain , Hugo Gaston had fun coming out of his match against the Argentinian Cachin. This status that her two previous results (success against Parrizas-Dias, 42nd and Pliskova, 8th) could have possibly granted her, generated a, “you would have to be crazy to think that” from the defeated, inevitably affected.

This duel, Léolia lost it tennistically and physically too. On several sequences of the 2nd set, the Héraultaise thus seemed a little short, being overtaken by the strikes of Begu. “She bothered me more than the other way around, I got tensed by the event, the context, and my legs were not good. I would have liked to have done better in order to extend the match, there are had a small opening in the 2nd set”, analyzed, with lucidity, the player of Thomas Delgado who did not always find the right areas.

Not so far from the seesaw

Despite all these little “minuses”, “Léo” had opportunities, giving herself 5 break points from the 1st game of the match where she immediately led 0-40! “Yes, that might have changed things,” she dares. Losing her first two service games at 30 and “white”, she was dropped too quickly (0-4), saving the honor by gleaning her first game after 27 minutes (1-5), ouch, then giving up the 1st inning (1-6) four minutes later. Not ideal!

Same scenario for the start of the 2nd set where she is broken from the start and quickly led 1-3. At 0-40 on her serve, her gaze towards her coach, distraught, betrays her distress, her helplessness. Leolia simply has no solutions. For the first time this week, she suffers instead of imposing her game.

“It’s not over”

“It’s not over”, screams a spectator… visionary in this case. Because, again broken (1-4), the Stade Toulousain player will offer herself 5 break points at 15-40 on a Begu service where she lets an unmissable pass through to the net, placing her backhand volley in the corridor then on three advantages! In vain. At 1-5, and 1:6 am of the match, mass is said, “Léo” is tired but this is the moment she chooses to pick up, on the train (2-5, 3-5, 4-5) by saving the first 3 match points at 0-40 on his face-off.

The public of Suzanne Lenglen where we distinguish in particular the federal technicians (Nicolas Escudé, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Loïc Courteai) or a former French n ° 1 of legend, Gail Chanfreau, then starts to believe in it, seeks to sublimate it , hollers with “Jeanjean, Jeanjean, Jeanjean”, “yes, that obviously made me very happy” (sic).

“Now I’m aiming for the Top 100”

But Begu, not so proud, will end up making the difference not without shaking one last time at 0-30 on her serve, we are not very far from the seesaw. But a badly posed cushioning where her opponent nailed her to the ground then a final big fault on the backhand sealed the fate of the meeting (6-1 6-4). While Begu savors having escaped the trap, Léolia Jeanjean leaves the Suzanne Lenglen court, saluting one last time the public who acclaims her in honor of her career.

This Monday, the Montpellier girl should be 148th in the WTA rankings, which obviously opens up new prospects for her. “I’m aiming for the Top 100. I want to enter the Grand Slam tables. I’m not going to change everything but those around me will have expectations and I’m going to review my programming with this new ranking”, declares the one who will have been the front – last French in the running during this 2022 vintage, Cornet playing in the 2nd match on the Philippe Chatrier.

The story is on

Behind the defeat, which is always painful to live with, Léolia will nevertheless manage to savor: “It has been pure happiness to have experienced this week, all these emotions, it is the greatest moment of my life. And there are a lot of world who started talking to me… (smile)” she will conclude.

On the side of the Women’s Open except category of Marseille directed by Jocelyne Giraldi (ex CTD of Aude), where she is seeded n ° 2 behind her compatriot Chloé Paquet, we sincerely hope to speak to her from next Wednesday and welcome as it should be the one who between December 2020 (1180th in the world) and today, has gained much more than 1032 places in the hierarchy, self-esteem, confidence, the gaze of others with a vengeful side on a delicate past. More than ever, history is on the move…

In the stands, not in the arena: that was the place of women according to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympic Games.

For him, ?a female Olympiad would be impractical, uninteresting, unsightly and incorrect?. ?Pierre de Coubertin was part of the elite at the end of the 19th century. The men of the time considered that the role of women was to have children and raise them”, summarizes Pierre Lagrue, sports historian and author of Olympic century (Encyclopedia Universalis, 2012). ?At the beginning of the 20th century, all sport was inappropriate for women. It was improper to strip her ankles and then her legs, it was improper to have her hair undone. Only the ?public women? or the ?shameless? left their hair untied or uncovered. Obviously, it was then just as unthinkable for women to be sweaty, ?notes Catherine Louveau, sports sociologist, in the review Notebooks of the genre (2004).

The first champion: a tennis player

Thus, women participated for the first time in the Olympic Games in Paris, in 1900. That year, the city hosted special Games, since they took place over five months, in the shadow of the Universal Exhibition. About twenty women out of nearly a thousand athletes take part in the Olympic Games, in two disciplines: tennis and golf, leisure activities of the aristocracy. British tennis player Charlotte Cooper is the first woman in history to win an Olympic medal.

The world of Olympism opened up timidly to women in 1912 at the Stockholm Games (they represented 2% of the participants), who admitted them to swimming competitions. ?Women are tolerated quite early in this sport: a paradox, because they are naked. This is linked to the imagination of the naiad and to the invisibility of suffering in the water, when medical discourse accuses other sports of mistreating female bodies, of damaging reproductive organs… Women were never not supposed, for example, to ride a bicycle, under penalty of their uterus wandering around in their body, or high jump, associated with a risk of infertility. Granting women the right to play sports meant extirpating them from the home,? analyzes Julie Gaucher, associate researcher at the Laboratory on Vulnerabilities and Innovation in Sport (L-VIS) at the University of Lyon 1, and author of the anthology From ?sportswoman? to sportswoman (ed. of the Volcano, 2019). Women will be able to compete in the Olympics in figure skating and fencing, respectively in 1908 and 1924.

A matter of misogyny

An atypical figure, long forgotten, is at the origin of the emancipation of women through sport and the wider opening of the Olympics to them: Alice Milliat, a teacher from Nantes, an accomplished sportswoman (rowing, field hockey… ), campaigns for the development and recognition of women’s sport. ?Alice Milliat was a pioneer. She claimed concretely the equal right to sport. She was a feminist in action. Without it, I don’t know where we would be,? underlines Julie Gaucher. Alice Milliat scrapped for years with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) before it finally allowed the “weaker sex” to compete in athletics at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, in only five events: high jump, discus throw, 100 meters, 4×100 meters relay and 800 meters. For Coubertin, who left the presidency of the IOC in 1925, the entry of women into the domain of men is “a major affront to the greatness and the original purity of this competition”. Two hundred and seventy-seven women participated in the Amsterdam Games (9.6% of competitors). Media coverage is strong. The chroniclers of the time will describe the suffering of female athletes after the 800 meters with so much misogyny and bad faith that this event will be removed from the women’s program until the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960.

The Second World War and the Vichy regime sent women back to the house. The Helsinki Olympics in 1952 marked a turning point: the USSR agreed to take part in the Games, in the midst of the Cold War. ?For Stalin, it’s about winning as many medals as possible. The sports strategy of the Soviets is to bet on minor disciplines, neglected by Westerners (weightlifting, wrestling, rowing, etc.) and, above all, to promote female participation, whereas in the West female sport is not at all a priority. ?The USSR uses women to promote its ideology,? explains Pierre Lagrue. From her first participation, she took second place in the general classification, close behind the United States, with 71 medals against 76. Four years later, in Melbourne, the Soviet Union buried the capitalist enemy by winning 98 medals against 74. ?In 1968, the USSR gave a big boost in the race for medals, with the first participation in the Olympic Games of the GDR. The GDR uses women and establishes state doping to win medals,? continues the historian. The “Olympic cold war” has its heroines: on the Soviet side, the gymnast Larissa Latynina will remain for nearly half a century the most decorated Olympic athlete in the world (18 medals), all sexes and all disciplines combined, before the coronation American swimmer Michael Phelps in London in 2012.

Lagging behind the emancipation of women in Western society, the participation of sportswomen in the Olympics has slowly increased over time, from 10.5% in 1952 to 20.7% in 1976, 34% in 1996, 38.2% in 2000, 45% in 2016? It should be noted that, since 1991, for a sport to be included in the Olympic program, it must include women’s events. Another edifying figure: the London Games in 2012 were the first in history to which all the participating countries sent female athletes.

Digital parity but facade parity

The Paris Olympics in 2024 promise historic parity, announcing as many sportswomen as qualified sportsmen. ?Today, with 48% of participants in the Tokyo Olympics, we are almost at numerical parity, but it is a facade parity, points out Pierre Lagrue. We will achieve true parity when women’s sport is recognized at the same level as men’s sport, and when sportswomen earn as much as sportsmen. The gains of judoka Teddy Riner, gold medalist at the Rio Olympics in 2016, have nothing to do with those of Emilie Andéol, also gold medalist in 2016 in the same discipline. ?After her feat, the judokate fell back into anonymity and, unemployed, will have to tell her ?galley? in the media to find a job at the end of 2019. Even for the Olympic champions, the game is still far from won.
