Nature Communications, 2021; 12 (1) DOI: 10.1038/s41467-021-27145-3

Currently, the efficiency of water electrolysis is limited and often requires high cell voltage due to the lack of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions. Noble metals such as platinum (Pt) are used as catalysts to improve hydrogen generation in both acidic/alkaline media. However, these noble metal catalysts are very expensive and show poor stability under long-term operation.

Recently, single-atom catalysts have shown excellent activity compared to their nanomaterial-based counterparts. This is because they are able to achieve up to 100% atom utilization, whereas in nanoparticles only the surface atoms are available for reaction. However, due to the simplicity of the single-metal-atom center, carrying out further modification of the catalysts to perform complex multistep reactions is rather difficult.

The simplest way to modify the single atoms is by turning them into single-atom dimers, which combine two different single atoms together. Tuning the active site of single-atom catalysts with dimers can improve the reaction kinetics thanks to the synergistic effect between two different atoms. However, while the synthesis and identification of the single-atom dimer structure have been known conceptually, its practical realization has been very difficult.

This problem was tackled by a research team led by Associate Director LEE Hyoyoung of the Center for Integrated Nanostructure Physics within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) located at Sungkyunkwan University. The IBS research team successfully developed an atomically dispersed Ni-Co dimer structure stabilized on a nitrogen-doped carbon support, which was named NiCo-SAD-NC.

?We synthesized Ni-Co single atom dimer structure on nitrogen (N)-doped carbon support via in-situ trapping of Ni/Co ions into the polydopamine sphere, followed by pyrolysis with precisely controlled N-coordination. We employed state-of-the-art transmission electron microscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy to successfully identify these NiCo-SAD sites with atomic precision,? says Ashwani Kumar, the first author of the study.

The researchers found that annealing for two hours at 800°C in an argon atmosphere was the best condition for obtaining the dimer structure. Other single atom dimers, such as CoMn and CoFe could also be synthesized using the same method, which proves the generality of their strategy.

The research team evaluated the catalytic efficiency of this new system in terms of the overpotential required to drive the hydrogen evolution reaction. The NiCo-SAD-NC electrocatalyst had a comparable level of overvoltage as commercial Pt-based catalysts in acidic and alkaline media. NiCo-SAD-NC also exhibited 8 times higher activity than Ni/Co single-atom catalysts and heterogeneous NiCo nanoparticles in alkaline media. At the same time, it achieved 17 and 11 times higher activity than Co and Ni single-atom catalysts, respectively, and 13 times higher than conventional Ni/Co nanoparticles in acidic media.

In addition, the researchers demonstrated the long-term stability of the new catalyst, which was able to drive reaction for 50 hours without any change of structure. The NiCo-SAD exhibited superior water dissociation and optimal proton adsorption compared to other single-atom dimers and Ni/Co single-atom sites, boosting pH-universal catalyst?s activity based on the density functional theory simulation.

?We were very excited to discover that the novel NiCo-SAD structure dissociates water molecules with a much lower energy barrier and accelerates hydrogen evolution reaction in both alkaline and acidic media with performances comparable to that of Pt, which addressed the shortcomings of the individual Ni and Co single-atom catalysts. The synthesis of such single atom dimer structure was a long-standing challenge in the field of single-atom catalysts,? notes Associate Director Lee, the corresponding author of the study.

He further explains, ?This study takes us a step closer to a carbon-free and green hydrogen economy. This highly efficient and inexpensive hydrogen generation electrocatalyst will help us overcome long-term challenges of cost-competitive green hydrogen production: to produce high-purity hydrogen for commercial applications at a low price and in an eco-friendly manner.?

The study was published in Nature Communications (IF 14.92), a world-renowned journal in the field of basic science.

The study, published in Clinical Pediatrics, found an average of more than 11,000 children and teens treated for nonfatal ATV-related head and neck injuries annually in emergency departments ? that?s approximately 31 children and teens injured each day. The number of these injuries goes up during the warmer months of April through September, when they average 68 per day on the weekends. The number of injuries fluctuated over the course of the study, going up after the Consent Decree agreement between the ATV manufacturers and the government, which included numerous safety measures, ended in 1998. Injuries peaked in 2007.

?Although the number of nonfatal ATV-related head and neck injuries decreased during the latter part of the study period, they remain too frequent and can have long-term consequences,? said Kris Jatana, MD, co-author of the study and pediatric otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon at Nationwide Children?s. ?Most of these serious injuries can be prevented.?

Being thrown off of an ATV was the most common mechanism of injury (30%), followed by crash (19%) and rollover (16%). Overall, broken bones and concussions/closed head injuries each accounted for approximately one-third of the injuries, but these proportions varied by age group. More than 15% of injured youth were admitted to a hospital. Riding on a roadway was especially dangerous. Children and teens who were injured on a street or highway were about 1.5 times more likely to be admitted to a hospital for their injury than those injured at other locations.

Children younger than 12 years of age accounted for almost half (46%) of injured youth in the study despite the recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics that children should be at least 16 years of age ? old enough to drive a car ? before they operate an ATV. Children younger than 12 years were more likely than teens to sustain broken bones and be injured when thrown off of an ATV, whereas teens were more likely than younger children to be diagnosed with concussions/closed head injuries and to be injured by an ATV rollover.

?ATVs are powerful machines designed strictly for off-road use that require mature judgement, coordination, strength, and moment-to-moment decision making. Adoption of the safety recommendations outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics would go a long way in preventing many pediatric ATV-related head and neck injuries,? said Gary Smith, MD, DrPH, senior author of the study and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children?s. ?These recommendations include requiring children to be at least 16 years old before they operate an ATV, wearing a helmet designed for motorcycle use every time they ride, prohibiting passengers, and not riding on roadways.?

Nature Communications, 2021; 12 (1) DOI: 10.1038/s41467-021-26728-4

Aerosol effects on cloud formation are key to understand climate forcing in the Anthropocene. Wildfires inject large amounts of biomass burning aerosol particles into the atmosphere, which by interacting with clouds, strongly enhance the formation of marine stratocumulus cloud. But their role in regions with strong human activities and complex monsoon circulation remains unclear.

An international team led by Yafang Cheng from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) and Aijun Ding from Nanjing University have now investigated the role of wildfires in the formation of low clouds in southern Asia, a region that covers a land area about 500,000 km2 with approximately 270 million inhabitants. The researchers used a comprehensive approach combining model simulations with multiple information from weather observations, biomass burning emissions and satellites data.

?We discovered a particular strong impact of biomass burning aerosols on cloud formation in southeastern Asia,? says the first author of the recently published study, Ke Ding. ?The degree of cloud enhancements over continent in this region are comparable to those in the Southeast Atlantic induced by biomass burning in Southern Africa, a well-known wildfire hotspot, even though the total biomass burning emissions in Southeast Asia are much lower.? According to Ding, who was an exchange PhD student in Cheng?s Group, supported by the Chinese Scholarship Council, and is now an assistant professor in Nanjing University, the biomass burning emission in this region is about one-fifth of Southern Africa.

Aerosol-radiation interactions continue to increase whereas aerosol-cloud interactions tend to saturate at high aerosol loading

?Our analysis shows that the main reason for the amplified aerosol effect and enhanced cloud formation is the synergetic effect of large-scale monsoon circulation and aerosol-cloud-boundary layer interactions in southeastern Asia,? explains Yafang Cheng, the head of a Minerva Research Group at the MPIC and corresponding author of this study. Aerosols can influence cloud formation directly by serving as cloud condensation nuclei (aerosol-cloud interaction) or indirectly by absorbing and scattering solar radiation (aerosol-radiation interaction). ?Though many studies have focused on the aerosol-cloud interaction effect, we find that the aerosol-radiation interaction effect, especially that of the absorbing soot particles, play a dominant role on the low-cloud enhancement in southeastern Asia. This further supports our recent hypothesis that aerosol-cloud interactions tend to saturate at high aerosol loading, whereas the strength of aerosol-radiation interactions continues to increase and plays a more important role in highly polluted episodes and regions,? the atmospheric scientist adds.

The results further demonstrate that aerosol-radiation interaction caused by biomass-burning smoke from wildfire dominates the springtime low-cloud enhancement in southeastern Asia, and hence influence the regional climate and weather. Given the direct impacts the clouds over land have on human activities, such as agricultural production, solar-energy generation, and regional climate, the mechanism reported in this study is important for regional sustainability. It thus needs to be included in future forecast and assessment models.

Moreover, climate change is expected to increase the frequency and spread of wildfires. ?Thus, recording a present-day baseline with extensive and long-term measurements such as our ongoing project CARIBIC-SP2 should help to constrain model estimations of the climate impact of wildfire and foster our fundamental understanding of future climate change.? summarized Yafang Cheng.

Reader friend of Seventh Entry, it is an honor for me to share with you ideas and concepts related to the wonderful world of baseball From this moment.

I want to recount the key moments in baseball during 2021 and I found many; as the two-time champion of the Tomateros de Culiacán in the LMP; the title of the Águilas Cibaeñas in the Caribbean Series; the reactivation of the LMB with an atypical season of 66 games due to the pandemic and the large number of stars who played on our diamonds; the unforgettable Serie del Rey with the incredible return of the Toros de Tijuana; the pennant of the Atlanta Braves after 26 years of drought; the fantastic campaign of Julio Urías from Sonora with the Dodgers and his 20 wins; and one not at all pleasant like the unscrupulous performance of the Mexican ninth in the Olympic Games.

But there was someone who caught my attention above all and is the Japanese Shohei Ohtani, “The new wonder of baseball.”

What would you call someone who is capable of hitting and pitching in the best baseball in the world? This is common in amateur baseball but not in professional baseball, where each player has a well-defined role according to their abilities.

For me Ohtani is a phenomenon, a baseball-playing machine, someone out of this world who has perhaps come to transform the game. The 27-year-old Japanese was named the Most Valuable Player of the American League, thanks to his incredible campaign with the wood and on the mound.

What’s more, the Japanese received the distinction of opening the All-Star Game for the American League and appear in the batting order as the designated hitter. As if that weren’t enough, he finished the season with the highest WAR in all of baseball among hitters at 9.0.

It took 102 years for it to emerge a player capable of having this enormous ability to hit and pitch in the MajorsNo one had done it since the exploits of the great “Bambino” Babe Ruth with the Boston Red Sox in 1919.

Ruth vs Ohtani sterile comparison?

Many do not like the comparison of eras and players, however, sometimes it is interesting. Let’s start that in that Season of 1919 the calendar was 140 games compared to 162 in our times.

That year Ruth had a tremendous amount of defensive games at RF and 1B, compared to the little activity of Ohtani on the ground covering the LF and RF, since in most games the Japanese appeared as designated hitter.

Offensively Ruth had an AVG of 322 and led the departments of: R (110), HR (29), CP (113), OBP (456), SLG (627), OPS (1,114). In pitching he had the following records: IP (133), W (9), L (5), ERA (2.97), SO (30).

For your part Ohtani on offense had the following numbers: AVG .257, R (103), HR (46), CP (100), OBP (372), SLG (592), OPS (965). On the pitching mound he achieved the following record: IP (130), W (9), L (2), ERA (3.18).

We are talking about a little more than a century of difference between the glorious era of the incomparable Babe and the consecration of Ohtani in 2021, needless to mention the difference in strength, speed and physique between one and the other, in addition to how much the game has changed, so different and incomparable are the times, that Babe Ruth never played with players of color, the truth is that for Shohei Ohtani it must be a real privilege to be compared to the greatest universal figure in baseball something, which is not a small thing.

?Revolution in Anaheim?

Surely for the inventors of the game it is not funny the fact that a Japanese comes to occupy the place of privilege among the fans of the ball instead of one of their own, but since the North Americans and circus owners are not at odds with their business, they have welcomed the impact on and off the pitch of Ohtani in a market as important as Los Angeles.

Baseball and the industry are changing day by day so It would not be surprising if we soon see the duality of hitting and throwing in player development Shohei style, because like it or not, has come to revolutionize baseball and be a real incentive for everyone in the “Big Show”.

Grateful for the space with my admired and respected friend as well as colleague of many years Miguel Boada, whom I had the honor of meeting in the unforgettable Parque Deportivo del Seguro Social in the beautiful and exciting work of a reporter some decades ago.

Bradley Cooper was once attached to the long-gestating remake of The Crow, and here’s what he may have looked like in the crow’s famous makeup.

Here’s what Bradley Cooper may have looked like in the planned remake of The Crow. The ’90s weren’t a great time for comic book movie adaptations, and for every gem like Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, there were major duds like Spawn or Barb Wire. 1994’s The Crow is arguably the best comic book movie adaptation of the decade, with the film adapting James O’Barr’s deeply personal graphic novel. The Crow followed Eric Draven, a musician who is murdered alongside his girlfriend and returns from the grave a year later to seek vengeance on the gang responsible.

The Crow movie is a rich, gothic action movie that’s also a mournful drama. Star Brandan Lee was also tragically killed during filming when he was wounded by a gun fired by another actor. After considering leaving The Crow unfinished, director Alex Proyas returned to complete it as a tribute to the late actor, as The Crow was Lee’s passion project. In the years that followed, three sequels emerged. 1996’s The Crow: City Of Angels with Vincent Pérez, The Crow: Salvation starring Eric Mabius and 2005’s poorly-received The Crow: Wicked Prayer, fronted by Terminator 2 star Edward Furlong.

Outside of the various sequels and a spinoff TV series led by Mark Dacascos, the producers behind The Crow have been trying unsuccessfully to mount a remake for over a decade. This project was first announced in 2008 as a vehicle for Blade – a character who will soon join the MCU – director Stephen Norrington, and after he left the movie, various actors and filmmakers have been attached. These include Luke Evans, Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston, Corin Hardy and Jason Momoa and while many more like been linked, the reboot is seemingly no closer to production. In 2011, Nightmare Alley star Bradley Cooper and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo were the actor/director team attached to The Crow, and after they left, designer Diego Latorre gave ComingSoon a glimpse at how Cooper’s Crow may have looked.

The artist told ComingSoon that ?The Crow images published are very early production sketches and are based in my own visual interpretation of the character and not necessarily in Apaches Entertainment and director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s vision.? Bradley Cooper’s take on The Crow would have very much leaned into the character’s rock star side, with the designs also adding a gothic flair. The actual makeup doesn’t differ much from the classic look of The Crow – which cut the Skull Cowboy character – but as Latorre stated, these were early sketches and the final movie might have gone in a very different direction.

Ironically, Bradley Cooper left The Crow to work on an ambitious, big-budget take on John Milton’s Paradise Lost from original Crow helmer Alex Proyas; that project was later canceled by the studio due to rising costs. Bradley Cooper’s The Crow sounds like it had potential, and he may have even displayed some of his musical prowess that was mostly hidden until 2018’s The Star Is Born.

Westruper Heide in Haltern am See

Restaurants am See

Restaurants am See

?It was a very high-impact artificial intelligence project, and I believe we saved lives by developing a cutting edge, novel system for targeted testing during the pandemic,? said Kimon Drakopoulos, a USC Marshall assistant professor of Data Sciences and Operations and one of the study?s authors.

In July 2020, Greece largely reopened its borders to spare its tourism-dependent economy from the devastating impact of long-term shutdowns amid COVID-19.

Greece collaborated with USC Marshall and Wharton to create ?Eva,? an artificial intelligence algorithm that uses real-time data to identify high-risk visitors for testing. Evidence shows the algorithm caught nearly twice as many asymptomatic infected travelers as would have been caught if Greece had relied on only travel restrictions and randomized COVID testing.

?Our work with Eva proves that carefully integrating real-time data, artificial intelligence and lean operations offers huge benefits over conventional, widely used approaches to managing the pandemic,? said Vishal Gupta, a USC Marshall associate professor of data science another of the study?s authors.

The joint study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

A public-private partnership

The Eva project began in summer 2020 when Drakopoulos, curious about Greece?s announcement that it was reopening its borders, sent an email to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asking questions about the country?s plan and volunteering his help.

Within a few hours, Drakopoulos said, he received a reply directly from Mitsotakis inviting him to a meeting.

Then, USC Marshall and Wharton School researchers, along with AgentRisk founder and CEO Jon Vlachogiannis formed a partnership with Greece to develop Eva for health monitoring in the tourism-dependent country. The country had a limited supply of COVID testing supplies ? an experience shared across the globe due to supply chain issues ? yet had to identify likely infected travelers who came through any of the 40 different entries on its borders.

After months of design, development and testing with the Greek COVID-19 scientific task force, the researchers launched Eva.

Eva helped Greek authorities sort through massive amounts of data provided by tourists, such as where they planned to stay and visit, as well as the demographics of each traveler. Researchers then programmed Eva to sift through the information and develop profiles of the travelers who were likely infected but asymptomatic and needed testing.

?At the beginning of the cycle, travelers interested in going to Greece fill out a form online,? said Gupta. ?They share information like where they?ve been before, demographic information, and their travel itinerary. Based on that information, we ? and Eva ? were able to recommend who should be tested.?

The design of Eva

Throughout the summer of 2020, certain cities were experiencing spikes, as were certain regions, while others were not. Eva took these demographic differences and the traveler?s disclosed information into account. Then, it pointed Greek health authorities to the travelers with the highest potential of infection for testing.

To prevent blind spots, the system also pointed authorities to test travelers for which they had limited data. This was critical for reinforcing Eva?s accuracy, which improved over time, the research showed.

With Eva, Greece tested about 17% of the estimated 41,830 households arriving in or passing through the country every day and nearly doubled the number of infections that a typical randomized testing approach would have captured.

?Given that randomized testing requires a large testing supply, Eva offers an impressive alternative,? said Drakopoulos.

Drakopoulos said he was inspired to reach out to Greece given his prior data research on epidemics. Some of the main ideas of Eva?s underlying model are similar to ones used by digital advertisers to place ads on social media, he said.

Other study authors were Wharton researcher Hamsa Bastani;AgentRisk CEO and founder Jon Vlachogiannis; University of Thessaly researcher Christos Hadjicristodoulou; University of Athens researchers Pagona Lagiou, Gkikas Magiorkinis, Dimitrios Paraskevis and Sotirios Tsiodras.

Funding for the study came in part from a National Science Foundation grant (CMMI-1661732) to Gupta and from an Institute for Outlier Research in Business grant to Gupta.

?No uso muchos productos.

?No uso muchos productos.

The UK?s Film4 has appointed Universal Pictures executive Stefanie Fahrion to its newly-created post of head of distribution and sales.

Fahrion will take up the role later this month, joining from London-based Universal Pictures Content Group (UPCG) where she is currently director, acquisitions and production.

Her new remit includes overseeing sales and distribution strategy on all Film4 productions, covering studio and streamer partnerships and independently- financed sales agent titles.

Fahrion will assess projects prior to greenlight; will lead on appointing sales agents and devising festival strategy; then will work with distributors through commercial launch and awards campaigns to maximise international and diverse audience reach.

Joining the UK organisation?s management team, she will report to director of Film4 Daniel Battsek, and work alongside the business affairs, finance, commissioning, marketing and PR teams.

Legacy

Since joining UPCG in 2015, Fahrion has negotiated worldwide and multi-territory distribution deals for films including Paul Schrader?s First Reformed, Spike Lee?s David Byrne?s American Utopia, Coky Giedroyc?s Film4-backed How To Build A Girl, Philip Noyce?s upcoming crime film Peggy Jo starring Lily James, and recent Berlinale 2021 selections Tina and Best Sellers

Prior to joining UPCG, she worked for Studiocanal from its Berlin office, on international acquisitions including Ava DuVernay?s Selma, Damien Chazelle?s La La Land and John Carney?s Sing Street. Her previous roles also include working for UK sales firm Independent Film Company, and the Berlinale?s European Film Market.

When speaking to Screen in January, senior execs from Film4?s commissioning team described the new role as the legacy of long-time deputy director Sue Bruce-Smith, who died in May 2020.

?Stefanie?s knowledge, skillset, and acquisitions and distribution experience within both the studio and independent sectors, give her a broad perspective on the global market, which will be a vital asset as we navigate the challenges and optimise commercial and brand opportunities in this fast-changing world,? said Battsek.

?I?ve long admired Film4?s commitment to finding fresh voices, fostering filmmaking talent and telling bold stories,? added Fahrion. ?I look forward to embracing this new role and connecting Film4?s upcoming projects with distribution partners and audiences worldwide.?

Film4?s 2021 slate includes new films from Martin McDonagh, Jonathan Glazer, Rose Glass, Yorgos Lanthimos, Lynne Ramsay, Oliver Hermanus and Mark Jenkin.

Upcoming festival launches include Eva Husson?s Mothering Sunday, Will Sharpe?s The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain, Michael Pearce?s Invasion, Lucile Hadzihalilovic?s Earwig, Julia Ducournau?s Titane and Jim Archer?s Brian And Charles.

Film4 titles lined up for 2021 release include Jonathan Butterell?s Everybody?s Talking About Jamie, Edgar Wright?s Last Night In Soho, Cathy Brady?s Wildfire, Aml Ameen?s Boxing Day, Euros Lyn?s Dream Horse and Ben Sharrock?s Limbo.
