“One more sugary picture of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas and I will…”

Do you think like this?

I do.

Because, what’s with this obsession over one actor and her singer husband in media, particularly digital media?

What forces online news and entertainment outlets to fall over one another to report the minutest details of this ?marriage made in heaven?? Who is controlling who? Is the celebrity controlling Instagram? Is instagram pulling the strings of media, or is media seeking out the celebrity?

And what cultural, social and any other value do these random updates provide?

During the Covid pandemic, several celebrities stuck at home shared tidbits from their daily lives as if that would help millions in lockdown get through their miserable days.

Many people saw through it and mocked the hell out of celebs. One ?singathon? of ?Imagine? led by Gal Gadot was particularly targeted with savage commentary on out-of touch celebs.

From the first wave of Covid onwards, several commentators questioned whether the pandemic would herald the end of celebrity news as we knew it.

Hell, no.

The pandemic is now receding, or we have learned to live with it, and celebrity droll is back in full force.

Priyanka ? Jonas, Johnny Depp- Amber Heard, Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor, Britney Spears, and? who is that guy?

In picture: US singer Britney Spears (L) and boyfriend Sam Asghari arrive for the premiere of Sony Pictures’ “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California

Celebrity sharing of mundane aspects of their lives is here again.

Every minute detail of Katrine Kaif ? Vicky Kaushal’s marriage is examined threadbare. Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s marriage, despite it being very low key for a Bollywood royalty affair, was among top searched news for a few days in India. And now, every murky, nauseating details of their contentious marriage is being shared in a courtroom by Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

But how much celebrity sharing is too much sharing? Will it all back-fire some day?

Lessons from the Will Smith family

I had a similar cringing feeling when Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith went on a ‘sharing spree’ in the past few years on social media.

cd

In picture: US actor Will Smith(L) and Jada Pinkett Smith attend the 94th Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California

Everything about them, particularly their private and sexual lives, affairs, cheating, open and polyamorous marriage, was laid out in public for you.

They made an art of washing dirty linen in public.

In the ?Red Table Talk? show, three generations of Jada Pinkett’s family discussed their lives, with a peppering of sexual themes: from masturbation to porn addition. Clearly the point was to go viral, grab eyeballs, get clicks.

In the run-up to this year?s Academy Awards, Will pulled all stops to get attention to his life and work. Weight loss stunts, daily life vlogs, biography reading sessions, sharing controversial details about his life and wife, shocking statements like how he wanted to kill his father…

The script was perfect. He kind of felt he deserved an Oscar. And on the day he got it, he ruined it all.

He will be forever remembered as the actor who slapped on stage the Oscar presenter Chris Rock on the day he won the best actor Academy Award for ?King Richard?. All the PR drivel that was supposed to lead up to that momentous occasion went down the drain, and there was radio silence from

Will after the fateful Oscar night.

At the time of writing this, the last Instagram post by him was an open apology to Chris Rock. Just look at the mood in the previous posts on his Instagram feed and you get the idea about the downfall.

And last heard, he has resurfaced in India. Jada referred to a ?healing process? in the latest edition of ?Red Table Talk.? Is Will on a spiritual ?healing journey? in India?

Celebrity news is sawdust, not stardust

This is the context in which I wrote the first line of this piece. There is a conscious attempt to create an aura around celebrity personalities, a happy-go-lucky life that the average person picking up the gossip magazine at the end of the shopping queue wants to live but can’t. It’s the life that, paradoxically, creates a sense of elation and frustration at the same time for those obsessed with celebrity news.

In recent years, it has also taken another cynical twist: celebrities sharing their fears, anxieties, and depression stories. While it may help foreground mental health issues, the celebrity is at the front and centre of attention, period. At the end of the day, it is fluff, a jacuzzi bubble.

Virality: Celebrity is the paparazzi

Celebrities treating media like their poodles, thinking every action of theirs will be lapped up by the paparazzi, is nothing new. But the difference now in the post-social-media world, is that the celebrity IS the paparazzi.

Once upon a time, for eight days in 2007, the news agency Associated Press decided to not cover anything on Paris Hilton, the socialite who in those days was famous for a sex tape, a reality show, and drunken charades at nightclubs.

?It wasn?t based on a view of what the public should be focusing on?editors just wanted to see what would happen if we didn?t cover this media phenomenon, this creature of the Internet gossip age, for a full week, ? AP had said at the time.

This was the pre-social media era. Is it even possible today?

Today, it would be derided as ?cancel culture.?

But the Paris Hilton ?media boycott? was an attempt at the time to deliberately forget a celebrity who didn’t add value to anything, except for herself.

cd

In picture: US socialite Paris Hilton attends the 6th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, California

Perhaps it worked. Paris was not mainstream for quite some time, briefly reappearing in 2020 as the protagonist of a documentary about reform school abuse. That has not however re-instated her anywhere near the celebrity ?royal? status she once had, though there is still a very strong fandom behind her.

Today, nobody is doing an AP on any celebrity, Priyanka or the Kardashians. The latter at one point in time were famous for being famous. It’s a different matter that, over the years, through their reality series and individual business empires, the Kardashians are far more accomplished now.

And Kim Karadashian continues to cynically milk her ?sex tape? controversy, that she herself admits had helped her fame.

cd

In picture: Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kris Jenner can be seen with the rest of their family members

So let’s get back to the moot question? Why are we so obsessed? Who is to blame?

It’s the dog that eats its own tail. People search celebrity news on Google, and Google makes that the trend, and the trend compels news organisations to cover more of the trending person.

It’s a vicious circle.

Till the tech giants that control the content flows into our news feeds and minds decide to tweak their algorithms to ‘cancel’ the celebrity or leader, just like they did for much of the Trump family, this drivel will continue.

Till that happens, your news feed will continue to be flooded with more Priyanka – Jonas happy pictures.

At only 26 years old, actress Anya Taylor-Joy is the recipient of a Golden Globe Award with a career those twice her age would envy. Making her breakthrough with Robert Eggers’ The Witch ? an instant success that catapulted the actress into stardom ? Taylor-Joy has since starred in many great productions, including Eggers’ latest hit The Northman.

In this action-filled epic, set around the turn of the 10th century, Taylor-Joy plays a Slavic slave named Olga. Though this role is unlike anything she’s done before, Taylor-Joy is an incredibly versatile actress who doesn’t tie herself to any one genre. Her best movies and series, outlined here, reflect that.

RELATED: Anya Taylor-Joy Shines In This Dark Teenage Thriller

The Witch is a period horror movie written and directed by Robert Eggers in his feature directorial debut. Set in 1630 New England, it follows a Puritan family living on the edge of a remote forest thrown into a frenzy when their youngest son Samuel goes missing and their crops start failing. With no explanation for these misfortunes, all fingers point to Thomasin (Taylor-Joy), the eldest daughter of farmer William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie), who convinces her twin siblings she is a witch.

Haunting and atmospheric, The Witch doesn’t rely on jump scares or cheap tricks to frighten its audience. Instead, like the A24 horrors that follow it (Saint Maud, Midsommar), it blends themes of hysteria, trauma, and religion to build a sense of dread that culminates in the movie’s final scene. Anya Taylor-Joy is incredible at portraying young Thomasin, who desperately wants to be a good girl but finds herself attracted to the darkness. As the shining star in this movie (which is, in many ways, a twisted coming-of-age tale), Taylor-Joy owns The Witch, as Thomasin comes to own her ungodly desires.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Split is a psychological thriller movie about DID sufferer Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), a man with 23 personalities who kidnaps and holds hostage three teenagers. These victims are best friends Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula), and social outcast Casey (Taylor-Joy). Imprisoned in an underground lair, the girls learn about Kevin’s 24th personality, The Beast, and band together to fight it.

Taylor-Joy has the most significant role of the three girls as the smart and empathetic Casey. A fascinating character, Casey is a survivor of abuse and relates to Kevin in a way that the others cannot; this, combined with her survivalist knowledge, gives her the key to their escape. Some of Casey’s best scenes involve 9-year-old alter Hedwig, a Kanye West-loving dancer she befriends as part of her escape plan. Hedwig provides plenty of laughs, and his innocence permits a more sympathetic portrayal of DID that touches both Casey and the audience.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a Netflix original fantasy series that acts as a prequel to the 1982 Jim Henson movie The Dark Crystal. Set in the world of Thra, the series follows three Gelflings: Rian (Taron Egerton), Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel), and Brea (Taylor-Joy), on a quest to save their planet from the corrupted, tyrannical Skeksis, the self-proclaimed Lords of the Crystal. The Crystal of Truth is the beating heart of Thra that, in the Skeksis’ hands, has become corrupted, spreading sickness across the land.

Winner of a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program, Age of Resistance was well-received by critics and audiences alike. Produced by The Jim Henson Company, it shares much in common with the original movie, including incredible puppetry, production design, and voice acting above all else. It is considered one of the most faithful adaptations ever created. Taylor-Joy only helps win over audiences who get to see her character go from bored princess to plucky, powerful rebel.

The Queen’s Gambit is a Netflix original drama miniseries based on the 1983 Walter Tevis novel of the same name. Beginning in the 50s and ending in the late 60s, the story follows fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy) as she comes of age. Audiences first meet Beth at age 9 after her mother dies, and she is sent to live in an orphanage. Here, she meets Mr Shaibel (Bill Camp), a gruff but kind-hearted janitor who teaches her how to play chess. Beth immediately falls in love with the game and, for the next decade of her life, seeks to rise to the top whilst battling addiction.

Watched by 62 million households in its first 28 days, The Queen’s Gambit broke the record for Netflix’s most-watched scripted limited series to date (a record since surpassed by Maid). The miniseries also won many awards, including a whopping 11 Emmys and two Golden Globes. This isn’t surprising; the story is captivating ? exploring themes of grief, addiction, and sexuality, as well as chess ? and the acting is superb. Aside from Taylor-Joy, who offers the best performance of her career here, Thomas Brodie-Sangster is particularly brilliant as her on-screen competition.

Directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Last Night in Soho is a psychological thriller that follows a young country girl, Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), whose move to London becomes a nightmare. Studying at the London College of Fashion and unhappy living in her halls, Eloise rents a bedsit from an elderly woman (Diana Rigg) and dreams her way into the 60s where she meets aspiring singer Sandie (Taylor-Joy). A fan of all things retro, Eloise is elated with her time-traveling abilities, until the past begins to haunt her in more ways than one.

The apple of Eloise’s eye, Sandie is a complex character who is, in many ways, the main character of Last Night in Soho. The first time audiences see Sandie ? which is almost always through Eloise’s eyes ? they see a confident young woman with a lot going for her. As they spend more time with her, however, they see her slowly break down, as life takes her down some dark roads. Sandie’s trauma is a major theme in Last Night in Soho that Taylor-Joy handles with sensitivity. Likewise, McKenzie returns this favor with her character, and the best scenes in the movie see Eloise desperately try to protect Sandie.

Last year, Will Smith appeared on the episode of Actually Me on GQ YouTube, where he went undercover to reply to his fans on social media. The first question for Smith on Twitter was why he and Dwayne Johnson have not starred in a movie yet. He replied to the tweet in his humble attempt at pulling off The Rock?s iconic style.

Will Smith said, ?That?s my question. That?s my question. (in The Rock?s style) I might have to do old school smackdown walk up on him. I don?t know, I would love to work with The Rock. He is a beast.?

This is indeed The Rock style, as The Brahma Bull often used to say ?I?ll lay the SmackDown on your?.? in his promos. Smith and Johnson know each other very well, however; they have never crossed paths together on the same movie project. These two superstars in one movie will definitely be a blockbuster.

Will Smith and Dwayne Johnson would have collaborated in DCEU

The WWE wrestler turned actor Dwayne Johnson will enter the super hero-verse with DC Extended Universe. Johnson will play the anti-hero in his own movie.

Will Smith was the part of DCEU?s Suicide Squad where he played Deadshot. However, he didn?t reprise the role due to scheduling issues and Idris Elba played Deadshot in Suicide Squad 2. It Smith never left DCEU, we would have got to see both actors in one movie someday in the future.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would have included Daniel Craig instead of a beloved cameo, had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic.

A fan-favorite cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness almost looked entirely different.

According to tweets from Heavy Spoilers and Deadline‘s Justin Kroll, actor John Krasinski appearing as Earth-838’s Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic was not the original plan for the Doctor Strange sequel. James Bond actor Daniel Craig was reportedly set to appear instead as the Asgardian Balder the Brave, a character that first appeared in Journey Into Mystery #85 in 1962, just two issues after Thor first appeared for Marvel Comics. However, the reports claim that due to Craig’s concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, he backed out and did not shoot for the film.

Heavy Spoilers claims that Craig’s Balder was set to be a member of the Illuminati instead of Krasinski’s Reed Richards. In place of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch turning Mister Fantastic into spaghetti, she would have talked the Asgardian into killing himself during the Illuminati’s death at her hands. The Twitter account also states that Krasinki didn’t film for the movie until reshoots took place.

Though Craig did not join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Krasinski portraying Mister Fantastic is a fan casting that many have wanted to see for a long time in the MCU. Some questions remain after his appearance in Multiverse of Madness, specifically whether he will be the MCU’s main Mister Fantastic and reprise the role for the upcoming Fantastic Four film that Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts has backed out of. Krasinski’s fan cast is part of a set as well, being that many fans wish to see Krasinski’s wife, actor Emily Blunt, portray Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in a Fantastic Four film as well.

As for Craig, the actor has finished up his portrayal of James Bond, which began with Casino Royale (2006) and ended with No Time to Die (2021). An upcoming project for the actor is the anticipated Knives Out 2, directed by Rian Johnson. Craig will rejoin Johnson and reprise his role as private detective Benoit Blanc in the sequel to 2019’s Knives Out, though the movie will have a new star-studded cast with the likes of Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist, The Matrix: Resurrections) and more.

Despite the film suffering a box office drop as of writing, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.

But, today, the ?Viper? caught everyone off guard when he stood up for his former rival when Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock?s cousin, Roman Reigns, belittled him during his promo in the main event of SmackDown.

What was the reason Randy Orton backed up John Cena?

Roman Reigns and The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) closed the latest episode of SmackDown addressing the Raw Tag Team Champions, RK-Bro.

The ?Tribal Chief? Roman Reigns, too, cut a promo. He stated The Bloodline smashes everyone on its way and moves on to the next thing. According to Reigns, no one can beat The Bloodline.

The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion said, ?You all know the deal. We smash them on Sunday [Premium Live Event], and then we come out the next Friday [on SmackDown] and tell you all who?s next [opponent].?

The WWE Undisputed Universal Champion also reminded how The Bloodline defeated RK-Bro and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania Backlash. Hence, there?s no one left for Reigns to smash.

Roman Reigns continued to carry his ?God Mode? on SmackDown, but Randy Orton shushed him in a verbal smack. Randy Orton and ?The Original Bro? Riddle were on a mission to belittle Roman Reigns and his obnoxious cousins. And they did!

Orton mentioned, ?I see you smiling, Roman, but you didn?t smash John Cena. John Cena is ten times the Superstar you will EVER be! Believe that!?

These words by Randy Orton for John Cena are pure gold. It is a big deal because, after a heated rivalry back in the days, Orton defended Cena in his absence. Apart from The Viper taking revenge for his foe-turned-friend, John Cena, even Riddle struck back at The Tribal Chief.

In the last half decade, Haley Lu Richardson has amassed an impressive variety of roles, from slapstick comedies and indie dramas, united in their striking naturalism.

As the popular best friend to Hailee Steinfeld?s misanthrope in teen comedy Edge of Seventeen, a star-crossed lover with cystic fibrosis in Five Feet Apart and an architecture nerd who befriends a grieving older man in Kogonada?s critically acclaimed Columbus, the 27-year-old American actor?s warmth consistently elevates what could be flat or derivative characters into full-blooded people. She is remarkably good at the more casual, throwaway aspects of life that often translate poorly to screen ? Googling Planned Parenthood in Unpregnant, shooting a glance in the memories of a techno-sapien robot in After Yang or, in the case of her new film Montana Story, calling an Uber to her father?s ranch in Big Sky country.

Montana Story, written and directed by the film-making duo Scott McGehee and David Siegel, marks a departure for Richardson, who has mostly played teenagers in complicated situations. Her character Erin is a full adult ? 25 years old, reconnecting with her estranged brother, played by Owen Teague, after a stroke sends their mutually loathed father into a coma.

?I?ve retired from playing teenagers,? she says with a laugh over Zoom earlier this week from Italy. The decision came after filming Unpregnant, in which she played a 17-year-old honor student reconnecting with her best friend over slushies and Kelly Clarkson while road-tripping across states for an abortion. ?I remember thinking after that movie, ?I think that was the last time I can connect to a teenager.? Like, I just don?t think that I have it in me any more ? that was 10 years ago!?

The warmth she projects on-screen carries off it; there?s a disarming goofiness throughout our chat, as she interrupts herself to mention cat hair (her cat made it to Italy with her), sparkling water burps and an aside about how we both had first kisses to Kelly Clarkson songs, which would be fully vintage to her more recent teen characters. Clad in a hoodie, she?s zooming in from Sicily, where she?s deep into filming the second season of The White Lotus, HBO?s biting satire of privilege and leisure that became the breakout TV hit of summer 2021. Richardson plays Portia, a mid-20s woman traveling with her boss, and that?s about all we can know about her character so far.

?It?s the same show, it?s just that the characters are different and the place is different, and the themes that intertwine through all the storylines are new themes that are equally as present in society and humanity now,? she says, searching for the right words. I supply: relevant, unsettling, disturbing. ?Thought-provoking, fucked up,? she adds, and we both laugh. Also that.

With The White Lotus and Montana Story, Richardson was drawn to inhabit a more mature, calcified era of emotional turmoil. Erin returns after a seven-year absence with a hard shell of bitterness ? toward her father, who we learn was cruel and abusive. Toward her brother, for more mysterious reasons gradually unlocked through a pressure cooker of awkward car rides, logistical decisions, and an inevitable confrontation that rips off the scabs on past wounds. ?The maturity of that is something I connected to more personally,? she says.

?Obviously when I did Edge of Seventeen, I still love that movie and I connected to it then, but this is a different level of connection that I personally felt to what Erin was going through, and a lot of that has to do with where she?s at in her life, and what she?s able to face and deal with.?

It?s been 11 years since Richardson and her mother moved to LA from her home town of Phoenix, where she had won a number of regional dance competitions. Unlike many of her cohort, she entered Hollywood with no industry connections ? her mother works in marketing, her father designs golf courses. Asked if she got frustrated by nepotism barriers coming up, Richardson was sanguine. ?I don?t try to fight, and I?m not mad at,? she says. ?I mean, I see people kind of come up around me, or have these incredible opportunities around me, and a lot of them have been working really hard for a long time, and a lot of people have a certain kind of connection, or just get really lucky in a certain role at a certain time.?

?I?ve had this slow, steady burn that I?m kind of appreciative for, because I feel like it?s given me space to really make mistakes,? she adds, expressing wariness around rocketing careers, the kind that draw intense buzz all at once. ?It?s like, where do you go from there, you know? How do you top that? And not just on a level of how others view you, and how you?re perceived, but also the fulfillment. I hope my whole career is just a steady build.?

Montana Story?s Erin shares a common trait with most Richardson characters: stubborn independence. Her performances, whether breezy or bottled up, seem to originate from the same well of headstrong determination. With Montana Story and acclaimed turns in Columbus and After Yang ? both directed by pseudonymous South Korean film-maker Kogonada, with whom she shares a mutually affectionate close friendship ? Richardson has demonstrated an affinity for small, collaborative environments and an eye for female characters who can?t fade into the background. ?I would rather, if I had to choose ? which I do sometimes, because I don?t get those opportunities thrown at me left and right,? she says. ?I?d rather be doing a smaller independent film with people that I really feel like I can collaborate with and I really trust, and playing a character that?s really full and interesting to me, than playing someone?s wife in a bigger movie.?

Richardson was almost in a much bigger movie, albeit not as a sidelined wife, as one of the final candidates for Batgirl in the DC superhero film ? a role that ultimately went to In The Heights breakout Leslie Grace. Was she nervous about potentially joining a massive franchise? ?Yes,? she says. ?The times that I?ve been up for ? not just speaking about that experience with Batgirl ? but the times I?ve been up for like really big or franchise things, superhero things or something, they happen so fast. You have to sign deals ahead of time. There?s never a script.?

She contrasts it to her creative sense ? ?the reason I do this? ? over which she?s become increasingly protective. With franchises, ?you become a puzzle piece and less like someone who?s helping to put together a puzzle,? she says, though she tipped her hat to Brie Larson, who fashioned her Captain Marvel in the 2019 MCU movie as a flinty superhero with a feminist sensibility. ?I really do hope that if I ever do something like that, there?s room for [that].?

One place where she does that find that room: Instagram, where she?s occasionally applied her acting talents to some cheeky homages of millennial culture. (See: an incredibly faithful rendition of Marissa?s pool chair-tossing freakout from The OC.) ?I feel like Instagram is the one place that I have that I can really control how people that know about me as an actor see me as a person,? she says. ?I like to keep just really ? fun, I feel. I don?t put too much thought into it, honestly.? That sounds healthy, I note, as someone generally anxious about posting online. ?I do feel like it?s not too unhealthy for me,? she responded. ?I think where Instagram gets unhealthy is when I start looking? ? the rabbitholes of online shopping, other people?s enviable profiles, or an explore page filled with an endless scroll of facetuned skin and injected lips. ?That does get to you.?

We end on a dour note, speaking just a week after a leaked supreme court draft opinion signaled the all but certain end of Roe v Wade, which would throw the US into a more chaotic and punitive hellscape of inaccessible reproductive healthcare than the one depicted in Unpregnant.

?I just can?t believe ? I am so sad that this is still a conversation,? she says. ?I really think it?s just so sad and wrong that this is a conversation that anyone is having except for a woman in the situation talking personally with the people that she wants to talk about it with in her life.?

We agree on a sentiment that?s true to many a Richardson character, candid and punchy: ?I think it?s fucked.?

When the role of suspected serial killer Larry Hall crossed Paul Walter Hauser’s path, it was an “immediate yes” for the actor, as long as it met one major criteria.

“To be honest, I don’t know that I would’ve even signed on, had it been a gross-out serial killer story,” Hauser admits.

Thankfully for the star, Black Bird is a six-episode, gritty, suspenseful psychological thriller developed and executive produced by Dennis Lehane (premiering July 8 on Apple TV+). Inspired by a real story, and based on the memoir In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene and Hillel Levin, it follows Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) as he begins a 10-year prison sentence. Jimmy is promptly handed an incredible offer: If he can elicit a confession from suspected killer Larry Hall, he will be freed. Completing this mission becomes the challenge of a lifetime.

Hauser says he likens the project more to the Edward Norton-starring 1996 thriller Primal Fear than a true crime series ? which he’s more than okay with. “The older I get, the less interested I am in watching true crime because the world is in such a place,” he says. “But I think what we did here is we’re telling a story about a relationship, and it’s really an undercover kind of crime story. So we don’t get into the ooey-gooey, ‘let me show you the gory detail’ stuff. It’s really more of a psychological drama, and that’s the kind of thing I watch as often as possible.”

The Richard Jewell star is no stranger to playing the “bad guy” (or the wrongfully accused one, in the case of Jewell) ? having done so in the likes of I, Tonya; Cruella; and BlacKkKlansman. Still, playing Hall, who was only ever officially charged with the 1993 kidnapping of a young murder victim, but according to experts is believed to have killed up to 40 more women, might have posed Hauser’s most dark and disturbing challenge yet.

To pull it off, Hauser first had to physically transform into Hall. The actor says he lost about 40 pounds for the role, and he credits the hair and makeup teams led by Katherine Gordon and Nana Fischer with creating Hall’s shaggy, greasy hair, mottled skin, and the infamous muttonchop sideburns (the killer calls them “burnsides”) he donned as part of his Civil War reenactments.

Hall’s voice, which is quite a bit higher in register than Hauser’s, immediately stands out when watching the series. So do his various unsettling mannerisms ? including a giggle that is pure nightmare fuel. Crafting all of that was a little trickier than the physical transformation. When it came to the voice, Hauser could only find “10 to 15 seconds of composite audio” on YouTube to pull from, and the little he did hear shocked him.

“When Mahershala Ali did that film Green Book, the real guy he was playing, he said the register was so high-pitched that he had to kind of cut it in half to make it believable and also not distracting for the viewer in the film, and I kind of did the same thing with Larry,” Hauser says. “Larry’s real voice is, from what I heard, pretty wildly high-pitched and distracting. So what you see is me at like a seven, seven-and-a-half rather than the 10 of absurdity in his vocal tone.”

For Hall’s physicality, Hauser just had to honor “the text and the contextual clues” he got from photographs. “I really just had to kind of go to my laboratory and construct this character based on the writing and based on what Taron was doing,” Hauser says.

All of that was a cakewalk compared to having to inhabit the mind of a killer for six months. No method acting here, however. Hauser says he shook off his character as much as possible at the end of the day. “When I would go home, I would watch Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I would play Super NES Nintendo video games with my assistant. I would find ways to get out of Larry and to just be a simpleton and enjoy things because it is not fun on the day when you have to feel the emotions he felt.”

He continues, “It’s no different from when I did BlacKkKlansman, when I played a racist ? I don’t like playing these things. It’s not like I get any enjoyment out of it, but if I’m going to be any good at my job, it has to be honest. So I have to get as close as I can to those feelings in those moments. And that’s not fun at all. That sucks.”

All that said, Hauser is ultimately a self-described “comedically-inclined individual,” who would try at times to keep things light on set, especially between himself and Egerton. “I try to bond with all my cast members. That’s just how I am,” Hauser explains. “Let me cook you dinner. Let’s go do Top Golf. Let’s see a movie during the day, whatever. And I think it adds to the work,” he admits. He hit it off with Richard Jewell costar Sam Rockwell and I, Tonya costar Sebastian Stan, he shares as examples. “Taron and I felt that way about this process, and we immediately dove deep and had serious, hard conversations about our personal lives. And we watched movies together and we had a few drinks and we very much bonded immediately, knowing this is going to be a big one. We’ve got to make sure that we give of ourselves to give on screen.”

In fact, it’s this bond he forged with Egerton ? whom he shares most of his scenes with in the series ? that just might be the part he loved most about making Black Bird. “My favorite takeaway from the entire experience was finding out that Taron Egerton and I both loved the movie The Muppet Christmas Carol and we randomly started sending each other videos of us singing songs from The Muppet Christmas Carol. Just want to offer that up, because that’s a real thing,” he says with a laugh.

Might those videos ever be offered up, too? Says Hauser, “We’ll see. Got to get that beautiful Brit’s permission.”

In addition to Egerton and Hauser, Black Bird stars Greg Kinnear, Ray Liotta, and Sepideh Moafi. The first two episodes hit Apple TV+ July 8, with the final four airing weekly afterwards.
